undertale is a really derivative game, which makes it a really really underwhelming experience. the demo was really nice, and gave me a good idea of what the game 'should have' been. when I progressed past snowdin, all of these ideas had been thrown out in favor of 'lets be friends' and 'annoying trope based characters'

You can't half ass that shit and have the character have joy, glee, smugness, bravery, just in the first few minutes. They have to be a cold machine who only acts on bad impulses.
There's not even one single second that implies Asriel/Flowey aren't fully aware of what they're doing, and that's what makes the Pacifist Final Boss so fucking weird in how generic anime final boss it is.

The game already resolves this issue. Sans doesn't appear at his sentry posts if you kill Papyrus, so you could only get into this fight in a Neutral or Pacifist run.
However, Sans does know if you've killed Papyrus in alternate timelines. He might make a quip or two about it if you try to hit him.
