Yeah, once I noticed it was bugged I stopped going for headshots in VATS unless body shots were like 80%+. Seriously. You can do the same with just about every companion, but some are easier than others. Just buy a bunch of chems and booze and you can do the same with Cait and Hancock. Quicksave and quickload before every Lockpicking or Hacking attempt and you can get Piper, Nick, and Deacon up really quickly with that.

Preston is surprisingly simple and one of the quickest as well if you haven't already succeeded or failed. Take Preston to Mama Murphy and save before you talk to her. When she asks you for chems tell her no and convince her to stop using the peaceful option. If you succeed you get a massive boost with Preston and if you fail you still get that massive boost. Just reload the old save if you succeed. If you fail, quicksave and quickload, then try and convince her again until Preston idolizes you.
Surprisingly this can also help get some other companions up as well. I know Piper and Curie like when you try to get her to stop using diplomacy. You could get all three of them to sit at Sanctuary, make a bell, ring it to get everyone to the same spot, and then do what I told you earlier.
