Sony doesn't like to put any effort/money into new things. They pretty much hope things work out on its own and they get easy money.
Sony approached Squeenix after they were riding high from the sales over FF XIII-2.
Nintendo approached them after a long string of poorly selling HD remakes, the hilarity of Lightning Returns, vaporware of FF Versus, and having to play its trump card of FF7 remake.
Squeenix is clearly desperate for cash. What surprised me is that they didn't go to uncle moneybags Microsoft with their long history of dropping meteors of money on companies.
