That's not the game forcing progressivism on you. Its just being linear/not giving you enough options to chose how you interact with the game and its world. Which arguably makes it worse, although linearity doesn't inherently hurt a game, although it can. In this case though, to not force the player to interact with said characters would hurt the game's story, as those characters have some core relevance to the plot, Alphys especially so, and if one doesn't even get the chance to care about the characters, than a plot is pointless. Why do any events in a game matter if the game doesn't spend time on its characters? Why should you care about what happens to them? Its the game's job to answer these questions and solve them, and Undertale did this through forced interaction. you can say that it pushed that on you, but it didn't push or force any kind of progressivism on you, which is what you implied.

Yes. I've played Touhou: Embodiment of a Scarlet Devil, Loli Loli, and Final Boss. I love them, although I suck at them and die pretty quickly in them. Although Undertale taking schmup elements by itself isn't why I liked the battle system. It was also the negotiation mechanic, which was like playing an SMT game if SMT negotiation had RNG removed and it was instead turned into a puzzle for the player to solve. I liked that combination. I understand that as a shmup Undertale is fairly easy in comparison to them, but to be fair shmups are ridiculously difficult, and anyone who masters them would find Undertale to be hilariously easy.

I thought the sans fight was one of the worse fights in the game since sans' attacks never changed to meet your movements, and instead they were the same attacks in order each turn. It was entirely based on memorization, made even worse by the fact that it doesn't let you win the first time you play it. Every other fight in the game lets you see attacks coming, but there you just have to lose until you've learned the pattern. Undyne the Undying is the best fight in the game.

If you look into Persona just know that 3 and 4 don't have negotiation mechanics. Negotiation is more of an SMT thing. Well, Persona being related to SMT I mean the purer SMT titles. This is news to me; Sans is perfectly beatable from a clean reset, first try.
He even has special dialogue if you 3-0 him, compared to just if you 3-[any]. He regrets being too lazy to train.
Unfortunately, you don't get any dialogue from Sans for multiple refights along the lines of "Well if you'd rather keep fighting me than destroy the world, OK then, I hope my suffering can keep you entertained, you bastard". He just says he won't grace your expression with a remark.
No extra fun stuff if your most recent save is Toriel's house, and you no-save the entire geno run 3 times over to 3-0 sans, then talk to Sans - you can't tell him e.g. to train, or that if he'll fight you then you'll spare everyone, since all you really wanted was some tough fights.
A shame Toby doesn't want to expand on Undertale, but I suppose when something's done, it's done.

I like this idea. Mine was that if you completed the real ending, your character would be aware of the True Lab and there's where she's hiding everybody.
You can't get in to fight them directly but instead you sabotage something like the lab's ventilation or since it's underground, cause the Hotland's lava to flood inside. After which, you're rewarded with Alphys panicking on the intercom, a soundbite of crowds screaming and an announcement that you've gained exp.

That's one of the things I hate about Undertale. They assume the only reason you want to kill shit is because you're an evil bastard who finds killing inherently fun. They assume you enjoy seeing numbers go up and this justifies killing innocent creatures with lives and families. Here's the thing though: a number determines whether you live or die. A bigger number lets you take more hits. There's no peaceful way to permanently increase that number. And while most of the monsters aren't out to kill you explicitly, they still deal notable amounts of damage and some actually do want you dead. Even just killing one thing makes you an asshole in the game's eyes.
