ITT: The building part of FO4

Why is nobody talking about this? Building things is a nightmare with the retarded snapping. The walls with door holes have the holes in the middle but stairs always snap to the sides of the floor boards. Did nobody at Bethesda actually try to build something and notice this? Mod to remove this stupid shit when?
>>
>>316567640
i agree, cant put roofs on anything and when they do attach they are always facing outside the structure.

I currently have all the beds for my settlers in a room with no roof and gaps in every corner.

I don't think most people playing FO4 care that much about the building stuff. I've barely touched it.

There's also this. Most of the roof pieces curve upward and that's nice unless I need to put more than 2 pieces together. Any flat roof will only snap to the bottom of the other roof pieces so the entire roof must be flat. Is there also a way to unlock more building materials? I feel sorry for anyone on consoles who tries to get into this to take a break from questing.

WHY THE FUCK HAVE I SPENT MORE TIME BUILDING SETTLEMENTS THAN EXPLORING
>>
>>316568907
>no way to properly manage your settlers at a glance

Fucking this. Every time I set up a new structure that requires a settler I have to remember or guess who isn't assigned to something. Then i have to go back and make them harvest food after I see my food plummet because I chose the wrong one.

Actually, this you can do.

They basically took the GECK tutorial set pieces from Fallout 3, cut your selection in half, and added forced snapping. It's absolutely terrible. You shouldn't have to do this in first person, nor should you have to do this without noclip.

This. Nothing about building sounds appealing in Fallout. Can you skip this shit entirely and just wander the wasteland or is it mandatory to complete the game?
>>
Was trying to build the teleporter into the institute, accidentally built two platforms, so I tried to get rid of one, but couldn't scrap it, so I tried to store it. But because one was stored, it wouldn't let me finish the quest because I still needed to "build" the platform, even though I had a working teleporter set that was fully powered. Idk how I got it to work. I think I stored both platforms and built one right under the giant tower thing and that tricked the game. but fuck i wanted to smash my monitor
>>
>>316571049
I cant say I have gained any direct advantages from building my settlements bigger.

Maybe the artillery bit, but that was a quest in itself and not part of regular settlement building..

I've taken control of 3 small places because of a quest line with the nigger. How do I access my main stash in those locations? It's a different stash from my stash in sanctuary and that sucks big time.
>>
>>316571902
get the first leadership perk, it's 6 Charisma required.

Then when you highlight someone, instead of command you make them run a supply line to a settlement of your choice.

What I do is, supply run from Sanctuary to the farm. I get a settler from the farm to run a line to Red Rocket, and then another Settler from Red Rocket to the farm in the Northeast and so on.

This allows for all to be connected and share the same junk/materials.
>>
>>316568482
nothing wrong with flat roofs. it means you can build generators up there and run wire down through your building
>>
>>316567640
What do you expect this to be dwarf fortress? Just be happy it exists at all

(its just a marketing ploy dude that's how bethesda games always turn out. A low effort, half assed implementation of something that would have been cool that is only technically there so they can slap it on the box/get mouthbreathers to talk about it)
>>
>>316572105

>know about the shitty pathing scripting that they do

Its like putting a v8 turbocharged engine inside of volkwagen family car.

The engine block will drive out of the car on its own the moment you put the keys into the ignition.

Such a really dumb choice to make for a game. Practically speaking these things have no value to this game.

I know of many gmod submods that assign health to objects, making terrain somewhat destructable and also fun in combat with other players. But here it doesnt matter. Its all aesthetics. Pretty for screenshots but without any functional value.

Couple of questions. First, what does the triangular symbol with the exclamation mark inside it mean when it appears next to a settlement's name in the pipboy? I thought it meant the settlement was under attack but there are no hostiles when I get to the settlement and one of them had no settlers at all but still had the alert.

Second, what's the deal with some of the powered stuff you can set up? What does the siren do? Is there any use for that that powered speaker other than making an annoying buzzing that shifts up tone? What can you do at the terminal if you build it?

Use junk fences. No snapping, although because of the uneven nature of their construction you do have to be careful about not leaving gaps between sections, although if there is, you can also build barbed wire posts to fill said gaps.

I basically turned the first Red Rocket garage into a goddamn deathtrap with one entrance and about 7 turrets around said entrance area, above and on the ground. Wasn't interested in the settlement construction so much at the moment, so I decided to just make one good one for my own needs and leave the others be.

Why is this even a thing? Why are you building a fucking settlement an hour into gameplay?

Say what you will about Shitrim's Hearthfire, at least it was modular shit done after the base game was "finished".

It's like they tried to make some horrible Frankenstein's Monster out of Bioshock, Minecraft. and Mass Effect and failed in all fields.

That really killed any momentum I had.
>>
>>316587214
I have the opposite criticism. The Settlement wall is impossible to connect and I find that frustrating. I've seen a couple great examples in this thread.

I think I'll just use the Red Rocket area for the base if I decide to waste more time on it.

At first it was really fun to build a small village for the fuckers to live in, but after a while, I realized it was all completely pointless. You get nothing out of it, the villagers are unresponsive, you see no reactions, sometimes they don't even sleep in the fucking beds that I made for them. Now I just use Sanctuary just to keep materials and upgrade weps/armor. I give no fucks if the moral goes down or up or whatever.

>>316601380
I very much like it. I'm having trouble planning how exactly I'm going to build my character, most of the Perks are pretty good and it actually feels like I'm not great at everything. My stealth ability is still nearly zero, I can't pick any locks or hack any terminals, my skill with guns is poor, but I can manage a settlement, handle laser weapons well and punch the fuck out of things.

In the previous games (both Fallout and Elder Scrolls), it was pretty simple to know what I was going to pick as it was so easy to max out everything, leveling up all Skills (which were the primary factor in how good you were at something) to 100 took little effort and most Perks were useless. Always becoming not just a jack of all trades, but a master of all trades pretty early on into the game.

Instead of grinding up to Level 275 or whatever to finally become good at everything, I'm more likely to make a new character and try a different set of perks (and take a different story route) so I can experience the game in a different way.

>>316596304

There is one limitation of TGM building. It gives you 999 of everything while in God Mode, but that's also 999 caps. You can't build the Rank 3 Stores which require 1000 caps. Everything else is available, though.

I've actually seen very few locks that were above Novice level. I'd pick up Piper and bring her around to take care of any advanced locks I noticed.

Although now that I have Curie, I'll probably put a point or two into each cracking skill since she can do neither... after I get a few other perks I want.

>>316603336

>>316603074
Intelligence just gives +3% exp per point. There are no skill points anymore. It's all about perks, and having the stat required to reach the perks you need. Decide what you absolutely must have to make your build work, and get those stats taking into account that you get 1 free extra stat to put anywhere very early, and every stat has a +1 bobblehead on top of that.

Individual stats are pretty weak, and perks are almost always much more valuable when considering what to do at level up. The only stats I would consider pumping just for their effect alone would be strength for melee damage, charisma for persuasion (you could just wear +cha clothes and savescum though), and maybe perception if you play mostly with vats.

I would say that most people will want to hit 3 strength, 4 perception, and 4 intelligence to unlock armor and gun customization, and lockpicking+hacking.

In my opinion, here are other worthwhile stat breakpoints:
STR = 4 for melee weapon mods, 9 for melee builds on higher difficulties
PER = 5 for explosive crafting/damage, 8 if you're gonna use vats with snipers
END = has a lot of quality of life stuff, but it's one of the best dump stats
CHA = 3 good bonuses for traveling alone (works with dog I think), 6 if you're into settlements
INT = 5 is really good for getting rare materials for mods, 6 will be mandatory if you use energy weapons, 9 for power armor batteries and rad weapons (by the time it's fully upgraded, batteries may not even be a problem anymore though)
AGI = 3 is mandatory for sneak builds, 7 is highly recommended for sneak builds, 6 is very valuable for melee builds on higher difficulties, as is 9 for much sillier reasons. most will probably stick to 3 or go to 5 if they use action points a lot (sprinting, sniper aim steadying, vats)
LCK = 3 is a little investment for free damage, 5 is a great perk for free exp regardless of your INT but not really worth building around, everything past that is amazing if you use vats
>>

Well, there's no need to build one, let alone several. You can pick your favorite locale and focus all of your building on that one area, or not give a shit at all and ignore it. You can completely ignore the Minutemen, too. The only times you need to build would be if it were quest-related.

I prefer the drive in theater since it's a good patch of flat ground with a pool of water in the middle, just right for the huge water purifier, and the big screen makes for a great overwatch point.

>>316608068
Yes. You can invite a bunch of people with the recruitment tower, then take the tower down and send some excess people to other settlements. There's no detriment to having a select few, you only need assign one or two people to crops and everything else can be covered by automated means.

I find 3 people to be an ideal number. Just one water pump to cover 3 Water, six little 0.5 crop items for three Food, a turret or two on an elevated point for defense, then build whatever else to make them happy. Most of my settlements are more like small outposts with all of the crafting stations, two stores and a Power Armor station at each. One person assigned to crops, two assigned to the stores.

Hey retard. When you just throw it all in storage, recipes will waste all the other possible resources from an item if the current recipe doesn't use them. GONE, not added to stock. So if it chooses to use a robot piece or something with good scrap and your recipe just uses the steel, say good bye to your copper and whatnot.

Shotguns do fall under non-automatic rifles according to the game. In addition, semi-auto is considered non-automatic (automatic is strictly weapons that continuously fire as long as you hold the trigger down) as far as perks go, so even the combat shotgun would still fall under Rifleman.

That's kind of silly. Thanks for the info.

I kind of wanted to go for shotguns+melee. Do you know if basher would be nearly as worthwhile as using regular melee weapons? Does Rifleman also increase the damage of snipers?

Yes, as long as your Defense value is higher than your combined Food+Water, raiders will fuck off.
As long as the Bed, Power, Food and Water values are at least as high as the number of people, that's all good.
And if there are no people settling there, you don't have to bother with any of that.
You can do whatever else you want with the place.

they should have made the whole game revolving around that. No Main quest, just a guy trying to build communities in a deadly wasteland, with the option of exploring the wasteland for supplies or old tech to build defenses or medical equipment... the exploration sequences would have also you encounter interesting npcs and uncover super menaces like mutants armies or whatever
>>
>Why is nobody talking about this? Building things is a nightmare with the retarded snapping.
Because that's probably what most people expected.
>>
>>316616845
Yes, you get Power Armor very early. Most players will stumble into their hometown and then down to Concord where the quest to get the first junky old armor is.
Getting a suit of armor is pretty important (and you can find/buy/earn them from a couple different places), almost necessary to navigate the highly irradiated Glowing Sea.

Power Armor has energy and maintenance requirements to keep working or else you'd be down to just a simple armor frame with no armor benefits. Fusion cores to power the thing, and the six individual parts have durability that must be repaired.

You can eventually end up with a big garage of power armor frames with whatever armor you stick on them.
>>
>>316615071
Melee is very very strong with high strength, and shotguns end up being kind of pointless with them since you've already got close-quarters covered. I haven't tested it, but I can't imagine bash damage matching real melee damage, and since you invested 8 points in strength for Basher you may as well just go real melee anyway. Melee also tends to have more range than people expect, because you can use vats to teleport to hit enemies like 10 feet away. Blitz would make it even further, but it's quite an investment.

I feel like melee basically just needs to focus on getting to a target without dying, which stuff like Moving Target covers, while Rooted can keep you safe while you're not moving. On normal, even those might be overkill defenses.

And yeah, sniper rifles fall under rifleman. At least I haven't seen an auto sniper yet, although I might have just ignored them.

You don't need to link all of the parts together with wires. That probably fucks up the logic gates or power distribution. And again, it doesn't appear as though you have a direct line to the dish - it's going from the terminal to the dish.

Just link the generators together and one generator to each thing.

What really pisses me the fuck off is the sheer number of useless terminals and locks. You can't turn bots back on their owners and a huge number of terminals/locks are pointless because either the key is right there or you can literally just find an easier way around.

I shit you not, I found a locked door in a house that was one part of a destroyed wall. You could literally just walk through the gaping hole next to the fucking advanced lock
>>
>>316588062

>>
>>316623542
Well, that's a not uncommon thing in any RPG. If something is locked, there's almost always a second way to get through or around it in case you don't have the means to pick it. Instead of applying a Skill that you've trained to give yourself easy access, you explore for the other options.

Probably not the same hole as yours, but there was a locked door to some corner store and the alternate way in was a small hole in the ceiling on the second floor occupied by a couple mutants and tripwires.

>>
>>316624847
To make the many occasions where it would pay off, pay off.

Most recent example for me. I had to go rescue some person who was sealed behind a Master terminal and Nick couldn't crack it. As a result, I had to go the long way around through a narrow tunnel system packed with supermutants and turrets. Burned through a good number of stimpaks.

When I got to the other side... it was a second Master terminal locking another door. You could see the hostage sitting there through both doors, a real kick in the dick. Nick couldn't get that one either. I had to go searching for the alternate way in - took a while to find a little yellow holotape with the code for the door.

If I had master hacking Perk, it would have taken one minute, no stimpaks or ammo, not twenty minutes and a bunch of my resources.

The game literally explains nothing to you, nor do the in game help menus, nor is there a fucking actual manual because its 2015 and no one makes manuals for games anymore.

Bethesda manages to dumb their games down for casuals while still failing to even explain how their unintuitive yet brain dead systems work. Its actually pretty impressive how incompetent they are as a developer.

Its kind of a shame too because the concept is cool, and it could have been really fun if even the smallest amount of effort was put into it.

i have 3 entrances with turrets lining them.

Is there any way to make the scrap fences snap together on consoles? Or cause them to clip? I spent hours building a perimeter of scrap fences due to the amount of time it took me to find the sweet spot to place them down as close as I could. It still looks so shoddy with all the gaps and floating.
The fence with the small tires poking out at either side are especially useless.
Would the fence even matter if your defence stat is large enough to never be attacked? Or is it just a reduced risk?

In either scenario you are using alternative means to cope with life rather than actually facing your problems. Drugs are worse for your physical health, but they both show equal amounts of psychological weakness.

>>316628037
I doubt the enemies would spawn if you're not nearby and I'd be surprised if they programmed it to happen. Although that's just a guess because I've never been attacked.
You raised a good point, though. If your settlement only gets attacked if you're nearby then what's the point wasting your build limit on a wall if you can just defend it yourself if you ever DO get attacked.
3/4 of my build limit is made of fences.

In New Vegas you could cripple enemies by shooting their legs and make their aim worse by shooting their arms
is this in fallout 4? I can't seem to cripple anyone

It sounds like you have a problem with people breaking into your house, and not people getting high.

I mean, unless you genuinely hate the idea of other people having a nice time, in which case you are mentally damaged or just a giant asshole.
>>
>>316635909
Using drugs to escape is inherently worse than using it for recreational purposes because you're relying on it to feel "happy" while using it for recreational purposes implies it's only in social situations and you don't need it to feel good.

You can get addicted from both obviously but it's more likely to happen when you're using it to escape your problems.
>>
>>316636154
Oh, I guess I do agree with you then. I mean there is nothing wrong with taking drugs to "escape" every now and again, but if you are doing it with addictive substances then you are asking for trouble and that can quickly lead to very bad things.
>>
>>316636046
Nice times are fine, recreational drug use is not. It's all fun and games until someone gets an addiction. And no one ever wants to admit they have an addiction, not even when they're drowning in debt and basically living off the streets to fund their habits. I've never met anyone so addicted to games they end up out on the street or sucking cock because of them.
>>
>>316636383
And the vast majority of all drug uses don't end up that way, jesus fuck. Are you one of those retards who equates all illegal drugs as exactly the same? What do you think about smoking and drinking?
>>
This is my little base of operations in Sanctuary right now. Might move it to the gas station down the way whenever I get the local leader perk.
>>
>>316636487
They're not all exactly the same. Weed isn't addicting, as are a few other things I imagine. Smoking is increasingly becoming less and less tolerated and alcohol creates a shitload of problems too. Smoking and drinking are a bit worse precisely because they're so accepted in the first place. It's just not good to involved with all of that shit to begin with, honestly.
