The game was designed to be both a score attack action game and a visual novel-esque story, it was one of the reasons I was excited.
Mid fight dialog for example held a lot of potential for character moments and Joule had an entire mechanic based around her affection for you cut and replaced by a random number generator.

I feel bad for the people in this thread who do not know Japanese and cannot play the game in its original, unaltered state like I have.
I can even tell you WHY these changes were made.
Its not about morals. Its about money. The localization team gets paid based on the amount of work they do and the time it takes to do it.
The original game is shipped to them, and they "audit" it, and send a fucking invoice of the 'required' changes for it to be accepted in the market.
And Nintendo of Japan is made of fucking glass when it comes to foreign market business decisions. They just roll with whatever NoA says.
So NoA treehouse sees a big game, with an opportunity for a big paycheck. So they audited a bunch of unneeded changes in the name of localization so that they could fill their pockets with a health bonus.
This also is what made the localization take so long- they had to remove and change textures and alter game code to accommodate their changes. And they did this not for some misguided beliefs- no, they intentionally did it for the money.

Not much you do not already know. XSeed seems to be the best at localizing right now. They appear to actually care. Never worked there, but have friends who do, one of them is also a former NoA employee.
About the industry as a whole? You guys are wrong about one key thing- the driving factor behind localization changes is almost never about SJWs- its about money, pure and simple. You do have one or two SJW types on a localization team, but its never enough to change the tide of an entire project- the real issue is greed. Why not change a few things, charge a bigger bill for it, and get more money and a more secure job (since you can justify a longer dev cycle with more changes). Localization is the Car Repair shop of the fucking industry. You come in asking for an oil change (translation) and we tell the devs, no, we found these other things wrong that need to be changed or problems may happen (culture issues, visuals, outfits). The jackpot is always trying to justify texture or model changes, because then we get to charge a shit ton extra and get a lot of extra time on the project to make those sorts of changes.
I left game localization after Twilight Princess because the changes left plot holes in the story, particularly near the end. And they were changes justified for the sole purpose of having something extra on the audit to bill NoA. That was the final straw for me.
I left America and taught English in Japan for a couple years. Now I work as a community manager for Japanese company in Osaka.
Interestingly enough, a lot of weebish western devs flee to Japan after they get sick of Western game development's bullshit. Japan has its own bullshit too, especially around Sega, Konami, and other companies that have underworld ties. However, this is almost preferable, and at least it is not an industry wide problem like Western game devs have.
