Mass Effect did it poorly actually, FemShep was a terrible character. And they had an elaborate dialogue system to allow for this kind of thing, which Zelda doesn't have.
Besides Mass Effect is a WRPG that usually allows for this level of customization, and the series has always been like this. Zelda is a character adventure game.

This logic doesn't make sense since Link has always been a boy, mostly the same iconic character with different hair. If they really wanted him to be a "true" customizable self-insert that you can turn into a black transgendered man, they would've done it earlier. This argument doesn't even make sense here since we're not talking about making Link a girl, we're talking about Linkle and Link who are supposedly different characters.

I'm an idiot so I might have missed it, but what are some clear signs that the developers intend for "self-insertion" ? Because even with character customization, the player may just be roleplaying something or making a goofy character. Not sure why many devs and videogame people default to assume everyone will self-insert.
For example, those weirdoslike mewho are male and often play as female, is their intent really to self insert? I dunno. Point is, I think the devs can facilitate self insertion or intend for it but at the end of the day it's up to the player to do so, and it might not be 100% accurate to assume they all do.
