The requirements for genocide run are fucking retarded. This game is charming I guess but the need to replay the game to experience a great deal of the content and the actual endings is stupid and in the case of genocide is unbelievably awful. Even with the TRUE endings the game can still be completed in one night and the game becomes substantially less charming when the game loses any sense of moderation with breaking the fourth wall. It's a good game but the people hailing it as GOTY and pooping out tons of EPIC MEME images where they copy paste images of the skeleton characters onto Maymays all day are some kind of awful extension of the Homostuck community that is making every effort to make me want to hate it, and then I look at Toby Fox's history and what do I see? There is no point at all where the game tries to say this.
Characters in the game react to your character in the game murdering other characters in the game.
In the case of Sans specifically, he knows for sure that your character in the game is doing it not out of self-defense, but just because they want to see what happens.
If you're taking criticism of your player character personally, that's your own problem.

Honestly JC3 looks like the first truly FUN game this year. So many dissapointments, witcher 3 was a surprisingly good game and the DLC was somehow better than the basegame. Not from the streams that I watched. Its a sequel in every sense of the word. The world has been improved, combat has been improved, they added a ton of things, tweaked many things, tried to actually make the story fun this time around (we'll see how that goes) and didnt remove the things that were fun before like fallout 4 did and so on.
its definitely no major MARVEL in the form of advancement, but atleast its a sequel that delivers what we expect. Not a sequel that fucks us in the ass, takes our money and doesnt even stay over for the night, like almost everything else this year.
But yeah, its kind of sad that that is the best FUN game to be coming out this year. What a shit year.

It's probably because your actions actually have heavy consequences, every one of them. The game surprises you each time with the third wall breaking. If you are an asshole you will have the best boss fight in vidya history imo, which is against Sans. He is pretty much fighting you after all his friends were slaughtered and he is the only one left, and his only motivation is stopping you from reaching the human world, slaughtering humanity and then growing powerful enough to destroy the universe along with all timelines.

Undertale was a decent game with writing and music good enough to make it very successful, though it suffers from mediocre gameplay and that stupid fucking final fantasy fucking random encounter bullshit I hate it so much just fucking kill me.
It was just ambiguous enough with the story to really draw you in but didn't go full dark souls. It did a really good job with not only making your decisions matter but having a good number of those decisions be unnoticable on the first play through.

This game made me feel the joy that I had when I was 10 year old watching Pokemon. It's that unparralelled childhood joy where you are so fucking filled with excitement you'd just scream and jump around.
The fact that Toby created a game that FINALLY uses the unique aspects to video games as a medium form to the fullest makes me appreciate it so fucking much more than the AAA "Open world game No 487772".
Briliant storytelling and character design, one of the best soundtracks ever made for a game, emotional rollercoaster all the way, perfect length, excellent spritework, good humor and overall enjoyable as fuck.

I agree that Undertale was great, but I wouldn't say it's the most enjoyable game of the decade. I definitely derived more enjoyment out of games like Kid Icarus Uprising, Xenoblade Chronicles and Wonderful 101.

The walking around in a 2d plane and the shmuppy stuff isn't what makes it a great game. Its strongest features are probably its set pieces, the soundtrack and how it's used, and some of the more clever stuff it does with the tools of the medium in terms of interactivity. Some of those gimmicks were really well integrated and executed, like the save/load permanence stuff. Although I think there are other things to take from it too, I think some people really like the characters for example.

I personally disliked quite a few of the characters in Undertale, alot of the music got really old and repetitive, and like I said, as far as basic gameplay nothing ever really changed at all throughout except for a few modifiers to how you moved in some boss fights, but overall it was decent enough to get me to finish the passive route and it was an okay experience overall despite the shortcomings.
I would never put it over anything like Batman Arkham Knight, Witcher 3 or something of that caliber, impressive as it is for what it is.

Because breaking the fourth wall means the game is acknowledging it's a work of fiction or a character interacting with someone or something outside of the work. That doesn't happen in Undertale.
Sans doesn't say "hey, you in front of the computer, you're kind of a dick." The player's choices, all the way up to saving and resetting, are all the responsibility of Frisk/Chara in-universe.
Even when Flowey says shit like "This is all just a GAME" and "if you WIN, you won't want to play with me anymore" is entirely consistent with the situation in the game. Save files are something that exists in-game.
The game very blatantly is creating a scenario where Frisk/Chara and even Flowey are indistinguishable from the person actually playing the game, but they are still actual characters in the game and the game mechanics they take advantage of are real things in their universe.
The game is painting a mural on the 4th wall, but it never goes past it.
