Yes they did, you shithead. There's not one single motherfucking guitarrist who doesn't have Iommi as his main influence. This guy literally invented every single guitar riff ever; After him people merely mimmick what he played but speeding up the tempo, or slowing it, or playing it backwards, whatever.

Their blues roots were only tied to their first album, on paranoid onwards they invented their own sound, which then people like Pentagram and Judas Priest took lots of inspiration.

>Yes they did
No, no they didn't, kid. No one band invented anything, it happened over time.

Bands back in the day were taking shit from other bands and implementing it in their own sound. Guitarists hear others tuning a certain way, or using effects, they like it, and then they use it in their shit. Drummers hear big band and jazz drummers using double kick (blast beats), they think it's cool so they start doing it etc.etc... Bands today are still doing this.

The same people think Black Sabbath just invented the metal genre one day are the same idiots that think Rush invented prog, and Michael Jackson invented the moonwalk.

I think it's pretty sad how Iced Earth hasn't put out a decent album since Something Wicked. Also they were better when they were more thrashy, like their first 2 albums. Their early stuff is godlike.

That's why i'm saying, out of that list. Though i hold Mustaine i higher regard than Kilmister because he wrote most of Megadeth's stuff, his soloing is nothing much outside of "muh shred", which gets boring after a while, but he used to write some pretty sick riffs and licks.

>>316444140

I disagree. Freedie Mercury always was a brilliant composer and an unique singer and beats everyone else in this picture. I found most of the stuff on the last 2 albums to be pretty generic, outside of maybe 2 or 3 songs from each album. Their last consistent album was Framing Armaggedon, and only because of Ripper's vocals, the actual instrumental is nothing impressive. I wish they'd kept him instead of hiring Barlow again, only to fire him later anyway. Also new singer honestly sucks, he can't quite nail Barlow nor Ripper, and doesn't have enough personality to add something original to the songs.

They're clearly softening their sound to make it to radios and stuff, which i think is kind of dumb, not every band can a pull a Metallica, and they'll never reach Kyuss or Queens of The Stone Age popularity. 2 bands don't make up a genre

Those 2 have unique sounds, heavy metal does not translate into their songs, and when someone tries to do that, they sound like shit. Every single fucking Heavy Metal band that tries to play like Maiden are literal dogshit.

Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are Nu-metal.
Nu-metal=Thrash metal/rock/and hip hop/rap elements fused together to make a funk rockish sort of sound. It has absolutely nothing to do with punk. Korn themselves started the whole movement and they are the reason Limp Bizkit exists. Linkin Park drew inspiration from Limp Bizkit and Deftones. All Nu-metal. Nothing to do with punk.

Today /v/ reminded me why I avoid metal forums and metal fans at all costs. Hardcore metal fans are the worst, the absolute scum of scum of all music fans. I'd rather be in a room with fifteen jazz fans and fourteen smelly old women that only listen to Wagner than spend a single minute conversing with a hardcore metal fan.

Every single metal forum on the internet is terrible and this thread is giving me flashbacks of the insufferable retards I would encounter when I was a young metal fan wanting to discuss awesome bands with people on the internet.
The same circular arguments jerking off over who knew the most obscure band or the band with the worst production, shitting on everything that hasn't been released on cassette, the endless fucking arguments about genres and sub genres and sub sub genres of blackened death apocalyptic satanic gumby metal.

Stoner is a shitty genre name, but it basically means slower songs with a groove, sometimes spacey, almost jam-like feel (even if the songs don't involve any actually jamming, it's that feeling of an extended, rolling groove).

Doom metal is basically long, slow songs with a lot of homages to early Black Sabbath.

>They're mostly the common ones: black, death, doom, etc, all of which are pretty different if you actually listen to them
THOSE subgenres are fine. There are clear differences between them and they all sound really different.

I mean once you start getting into the tertiary descriptors like with blackened symphonic doom metal or beyond is when it starts getting retarded, especially because only the weirdest and most autistic of metal fans will go that far, but those are always the loudest ones and they will argue against each other for hours whether something belongs in one tertiary subgenre or another.

Genres are fine, subgenres are fine, but there comes a point where it stops being useful and just exists for people to be smug and jerk off over how much more they think they know about music than others.

You sound like one of those children that scream "elitist" when someone says they don't like the bands you like.
>>
>>316448876
No, it's saying the majority of what defines X arose at that time. Not that it's the earliest possible example of anyone doing something that could be considered X.

If you say nu-metal was an 80's thing you sound like a tard. We're not playing gotcha trivia games here.
>>
>>316449107
>blackened symphonic doom metal
At a point I can understand it getting harder and harder to hear the difference but this isn't really that odd. Symphonic is a clear qualifier with a meaning. Blackened means it's influenced by black metal. So I wouldn't consider this all that strange but I would probably question if the person using this term could actually hear the influence because I probably couldn't. There are people much better at picking things out from music than I am.

not the guy you're asking, but my two cents...
stoner metal is generally slow, bass-heavy, down tuned, and often the guitars are played through a bass amp. Check out Kyuss, Sleep, and High on Fire.

Doom is sort of similar in that it's slow and down tuned but is usually even slower and more down tuned. The lyrics are more often than not based off a satanic or occult theme. Check out Come My Fanatics by Electric Wizard.

Sure, Stoner is closely tied to the psychodelic vibe, it's main traits are catchy riffs and lyrics about drugs or addiction

Doom is heavier, it also features catchy riffs but in slower fashion and lots of drums presence, lyrics are mainly about deppressive shit

Sludge is a mix of Doom and Hardcore/punk, it's heavy but a bit faster, then REALLY slow at times, lyrics about both about depressive shit

These 3 genres constantly are put together, a band hardly plays only one of the 3, but instead their own mix. I'll recommend some of my favorite:

Stoner/Doom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr2m1VzTAI8

Sludge/Doom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfGIQvACP9c

Sludge/Doom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-LNFCTMs24

Doom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7JTD_73kpI

Stoner/Doom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDnz37HQFc0

Now the biggest ones:

Electric Wizard - Doom early, Stoner/Doom later

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBdkbqgAmto

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDUGHaSZM3s

Sleep - Stoner/Doom, probably the most influential of the genres alongside Electric Wizard

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-FjO3E8K-E

They also have this really cool concept album which is basically a single song played for 1 hour and 3 minutes nonstop. Should probably get a liking to stoner before listening to it, it's called Dopesmoker.

Kyuss - it's actually stoner rock, but they were probably the first band to start it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaeUak_35VU

Also listening to Black Sabbath's Master of Reality is essential

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dra6y5agWM
>>
>>316449286
When you say "the genre was born in the 90's", you're saying it originated in the 90's, and that is clearly incorrect.

Just because something gains popularity at a certain point, doesn't mean it started at that point.

That's typically the stereotype for black metal but even then there's plenty of black metal that isn't like this.

Varg Vikernes is the guy that popularized the burning churches thing (I think) and at least when he started playing music he played black metal. You should read up on the early black metal shit that involved Varg and members of Mayhem. It's pretty interesting I think.

I think that was proven wrong (and I think that was Euronymous anyway) but Euronymous did make necklaces out of someone's skull after he pretty much convinced him to kill himself. Though the guy that did kill himself, Dead, apparently had some mental illness where he actually believed he was already dead. He slit both his wrists, slit his throat, and then shot himself in the forehead with a shotgun.

The problem with discussing metal is that metal is a catch all term for what is a huge and extremely varied genre. "Metal" can refer to Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Burzum, Megadeth, or Gorguts for example, all of which sound nothing alike. Naturally, people will gravitate towards certain styles and dislike others. This being the internet, and 4chan especially, people will be hostile to things they don't like and declare all taste that differs from their own, shit.

metal went back underground. I don't mean that in a hipster way, I mean that almost nobody is marketing metal. The days of endless Metallica merch is long gone. If you want to listen to metal you have to go out there and find it. This is mostly a good thing.

There are far more talented metal bands than ever before, spanning a spectrum of musical tastes broader than ever before.

Absolutely pathetic. You try to feel better than others based on fucking vibrations that travel through the air.

There is good to be had in every genre. If you seriously believe that all metal is worse than whatever music you consider valid then you should know that no one really gives a fuck who you are or what your opinion is.

>>316452095
Saw some discussion about Star One and then got into Ayreon shortly after that. Then Iron Maiden, then started listening to more aggressive stuff with Opeth. Don't really listen to metal much anymore. Just started listening to Boris recently though and they're great.
>>
>>316452095
I grew up listening to the classic rock radio station a lot, and knew I liked "that sound" of stuff like the Crazy Train intro, Frankenstein, Smoke on the Water riff, etc. I didn't know what to call it, but I was gravitating toward heavy riffs with a lot of distortion. My brother brought home Metallica's Black Album and I was like "it's that sound... but ALL THE TIME!" and it went from there.

Honestly? The original Rock Band. I really liked Go With the Flow which got me into QOTSA which got me into Kyuss which led me into stoner rock, then metal, electric wizard etc etc

Before that I mostly listened to classic rock and uh, Pearl Jam for some reason.

Back in 2005-2009 there was a huge amount of used CDs from people switching over to mp3 players. Record stores were tanking and trying to dump inventory by marking down used albums. You could walk into a Rasputin's records and pick up 20 wildly different metal albums for $30. That well has tried up though. It's even easier to get cheap/free music these days but I kind of miss picking out a dozen albums just because the art caught my eye.

>>316446652
it's just a matter of people not expanding their horizons and seeing their current tastes as static and therefore "correct" in some way, which is why you see it more with young people.

I hate people who describe every music or other preference people have as a "phase", usually associated with age. imo if you have a "phase" with an entire genre you never were really into it in the first place. a true music listener never abandons something they liked, they only acquire new things they enjoy.

Schuldiner's lyrics and singing style on the last few albums have this incredible ability to describe exactly the state of mind he's trying to convey despite having a nonsensical sentence structure. I think that's what draws me in to the album. He describes some pretty powerful emotions without having to refer to them by name. It makes you realize how inadequate the titles we use for them are.

Seriously, the fuckers on my radio station played it over five times a day ) went and stole my cd when I wasn't looking, broke it...and then poured chocolate milk over it just for good measure.

It makes me feel good knowing most of those bastards are either jobless or stuck in their projects forced to sell drugs or having two children by separate mothers that they have to escape child support from.
>>
>>316451407
what? metal is as popular as it has ever been, probably more so considering the amount of diversity. the "core" of metal was always relatively underground. it has it's period where certain more pop-friendly genres were quite popular, but that was always borrowed time. metal as a genre isn't suited to mass popularity or consumption, even the more accessible stuff. if there can be a consensus among musicians and fans, it would be that metal's proper place is outside the spotlight.
>>
>>316455703

Yeah I feel you, really do. Shame so many people give them a pass. That's okay though, I've met more than enough Death fans that just like to talk about the music and don't need to let the discussion devolve into "who dun it?-death metal edition"

>>
>>316456927

Yeah it wasn't just outspoken fans though. I've been told many times by non-tool fans that they aren't and when I ask why I never seem to get a true answer. They hear it, realize its different because its Prog, and then flip shit.

An example of a Prog band that isn't metal at all despite having metal elements here and there is Coheed & Cambria. They're fine and shit, but not metal. Clear difference in sound. Tool though? Metal all the way and I don't know how anyone can argue otherwise.

That said genre debates are some of the worst ever I try to avoid them
>>

Disturbed isn't really Nu-Metal. They were just labeled that since they came out around the same time the genre was getting popular.

same. when kids were really into slipknot back in the day I was already listening to more extreme stuff. and even then all the kids I knew who liked them never really knew about other metal and were so obviously trying to project that edgy "hot topic" air about them. I was kind of guilty of that myself as a kid, I hung out with a bunch of "outcasts" but we were never like that. we had to find our own music. I remember getting handed a burned supultura cd in the grade school lunch room that my friend had pirated off some sketchy p2p. I popped it into my shitty sony cd portable and was blown away. simpler times.

You were saying that Black Sabbath aren't metal. I've listened to each of their albums with Ozzie and they all have some heavy material.

They can be considered blues rock because that's the guitar style that Iommi plays, however your argument about music theory isn't really relevant because we listening to the output. Its inextricable that Black Sabbath did play a major part in establishing Heavy Metal as a genre. You can dispute how significant their part in it all you like.

Incidentally, they tried making a rock album with sabotage, which resulted in them making their heaviest album.
