It's really fucking long. Like, 100 hours for the main story is not an exaggeration. The 3DS version can apparently be completed in 60sih hours, but I'm guessing that's if you know exactly what you're doing and you're rushing. I played it and since it was the first time I played the game I took my time and got confused as to what I needed to do a few times, so it took me 138 hours.

II wasn't the greatest, but I think I dislike VI and IX more. VI just bored me and IX is hard to get into, it feels like they went with quantity over quality in terms of quests in that game.
Also, do you not get skill point upon level up sometimes in DQ IX? I just got the ability to change jobs and took on the quest to unlock the Magic warrior class. I need to learn Magic Barrier on my mage. I gave her a skill seed which gave her a skill point, I leveled her up via Metal Slimes after that which got her 5 more. Now she's level 24 or 25 and I just need one more skill point to get that skill, but after grinding a bit more she leveled up but got no skill points at all.

They took out all the monster battle animations and the dice boardgame rooms. Basically its the snes rom but gutted to run on 2009 japanese phones.

Really digging it!
II really opened up the exploration, I really liked how I was able to go get items I didn't need yet.
I did get lost a few times and had to look at a walkthrough and it made me wonder how in the heck was I supposed to figure that out. I really liked the overworld and sailing theme.

I quite liked the NES version. The remakes IMO take a bit away from the charm and innovation and makes it a bit harder to see why the games are so special and interesting. You can't go wrong with DQ4 anywhere, really.

Actually, thank god the game wasn't spoiled for me when I first played it. One of the reasons it impressed me so hard was I didn't know what to expect at all. I was expecting an old-school JRPG, and I got Dragon Quest V.

There is a twist in 3 that is marginally more enjoyable if you've played 1, but the thing is so minor compared to all the stuff the game has. And, most importantly, while definitely an interesting experience, the first game in the series is by far the weakest, and DQ2 is second weakest, while DQ3 is often considered the best. There are two game-critical items you need that are hidden with absolutely no hint nor indication as to where they are. They are on otherwise unmarked blocks.
The final area is notorious for its length and difficulty.
All that said, I still don't think you should skip it. Just play it with a guide.

I am playing 3. This is the first game I have ever played on a phone. I gotta say, I like it. Other than it hurting my otherwise amazing battery life. I am in the isis pyramid.

It's in a side entrance outside the main entrance. It's easy to get to, but you encounter a battle every step out of the pyramid on the path back out. It's brutal if you aren't ready, but that's also the strongest weapon in the game.

You get 3 at level 5 and 6, 7 you get none, 8 and 9 is 3 each, 10 is nothing.

Yeah it probably helped I got into Phoenix Wright in between. But its really strange how much more boring 6 seems to the rest of the series. Especially in a series where so much stays the same. I guess the world and characters just aren't at all captivating like some of the games are

That was my problem. I play for the gameplay and the exploration, but damn, the characters and story were so boring it somehow bothered me. The story just kinda disappears after you beat a certain someone a quarter or a third through the game. It only shows up again at the very end.

I became a fan of Dragon Quest because I bought 8 as a kid and it was fucking fun.
Never got past that fight where you finally face off against the jester-wizard and he transforms into a monster. I wasn't that good at RPGs and I put all of my points into the stats that let me get the fun attacks. Like Jessica's seduction-like attacks.

Dragon Quest IV and FF IV have no perfect versions available in English. It's one of the many things that got me irritated enough to learn Japanese.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Even hardcore DQ fans have trouble playing DQVI. It has a lot of pacing issues. I think because its a lo more linear than most DQ games. Coupled with an open job system. It felt like the development team was trying to focus on two conflicting systems in one game.
It would be like having a Mario game that focuses on a linear story, but then having an overworld map where you choose the order of what levels to play. It just wouldn't work well.

Make sure you play the SNES remake of DQII. It doesn't fix the endless sailing, but has a much larger world map. Which makes exploration way easier. It also improves the final area, which is legendary for being hard.
