Alright, so I'm starved for weeb shit after finishing Yakuza 5 and I'm looking at this game.
I should start by saying that I fucking hated Xenoblade for Wii. It was boring as shit and amounted to a single-player MMO in a stunningly empty overworld. The combat system seemed nice, but everything else sucked so bad that I never got far enough to see if it really opened up.
Given that I think the last Xenoblade was a steaming pile of crap, will I think Chronicles is any better?
I feel like my standards aren't particularly high considering I play and enjoy most Tales games.
If you didn't like the first one, you won't like this one. Its even more MMO-y, although it tries to hide its fetch and kill quests by making them part of "affinity quests" which supposedly give character development to the other party members. But all of the characters are flat and one dimensional as fuck, they all have a single defining trait that gets shoved down your throat over and over, and that is the extent of their character development. Also most of the characters aside from Lin, Elma, and a couple of others only interact with the mute MC and no one else, so most of the conversations come off as really awkward since the other characters are basically talking to themselves whenever talking to MC.
tl;dr if you didn't like the first one, you should probably steer clear of this one.

If you didn't like the first one, I would give this a change. You said combat system seemed nice. Thsi game improves upon gameplay, exploration and open world first and foremost. If you didn't like XC's cheesy story, then XCX may me more tolerable. But I will say it's not the focus of the game, so expect to be less driven by story and more driven by everything else. This game is also more complex that XC, so if you are fan or min-maxing and optimal build you will like the game more but it's still fine even if you just wanna explore.
I found XC extremely cliche, with a plot that was generic. I didn't find the pacing and interactions well done. Game itself was slow, and too driven by story where sidequests are meaningless.

The characters in XC were tropes but they had good interactions with the rest of the cast. The interactions in XCX are horrible. XCX's characters are even more one-dimensional and flat than XC's characters, which is quite a fucking accomplishment.

Those are the only things you ever learn about these characters. Not to mention how big of a dissappointment L was. He was built up as holding all the secrets and history to Mira, and he gets demoted to a fucking shopkeeper? what the hell?
Phog, Hope, and Nagi are the only good characters in XCX

What the fuck to do? I have completely worn out from doing missions, I just want to do the story missions and explore some, but the story missions have noticably higher level enemies so I just HAVE to do the extra missions too to even keep up.
Should I just grind or what, since even that sounds more exciting than endless missions from the task board.

Xenoblade Chronicles X has amazing environments and they're very pretty but there's only enemies everywhere. The story is lack luster. I really don't even pay attention during the cut scenes because they're so boring.
I like looking at the sky a lot though.
