Like all of the games in the DoD franchise/universe, the gameplay is pretty shit, so I usually mention that upfront. Basically, "yeah the gameplay itself isn't very fun BUT it has great boss fights". The point of the game is for the story and characters with a fucking BASED OST to boot.
If your friends are the kind of people that wouldn't be in to playing a game for a complex story, that involves a lot of reading, and interesting characters, then there's no way and no reason to try and convince them to play it.
Straight up, Nier and DoD are not for everyone.

The story isn't complex, it's obfuscated. There isn't much to the characters either outside of a couple of emotional scenes, unless you count the aesthetic design.
