The squeaky voices for the original group is odd because it seems like it was a conscious decision on someone's part to go squeaky. Because you listen to their speaking voices and they are decidedly less squeaky. And as far as actual voice acting goes Aya Uchida is particularly capable and did a way better voice in Trinity Seven than the voice she does for Kotori.

Most of these voices are nothing like I would have expected since I've never heard these people before. Which I suppose was true for most of the Love Live ones as well. Dia in particular took me by surprise, but I can get into that voice. Some of them do feel immediately appropriate despite the unfamiliarity though, like Mari's.
In my opinion, the best one is probably Ruby's. I was not prepared for the blast of moe. She is really earning that #1 favorite spot.

Imagine Love Live transplanted to a small coastal town in Shizuoka complete with a transfer student and you have Sunshine.

However, it also isn't accurate to attribute open-mindedness to the franchise or cast; the voice acting industry is quite accepting of same-sex relationships, fictional or not, simply because the nature of their work involves yaoi/yuri pairings and since many voice actors and actresses have romantic tension of some kind while often also marrying late if at all. Furthermore, the writing staff at Sunrise only gave us part of the characterization for the original 9, they had no part in the audio dramas or any of the written material. If you're concerned, you should be concerned about whether God ships your ships, not what Sunrise will do.
And inb4 "but NozoEli only became popular because of the anime", there are plenty of suggestions that God already saw them as a romantic pairing before then.

Also, the first season of the anime did well because there already was an established fanbase, and as some detractors would claim, because the DVDs/BDs were bundled with raffle tickets to the 3rd Anniversary Live, a sales tactic which carried on to season 2.
It's definitely asking too much to expect current fans to all get on board Sunshine, and Sunrise, for all the poor decisions they are known to make, understand that. Aqours have to prove that they can carry a series on their own, or at least provide a return on investment. Otherwise any Sunshine anime will be plagued with the same "new characters aren't anywhere as interesting as old characters" problems which tend to make expansions do poorly.

I've read Chinese scanlations of the NozoNico books and all I can say is, Kanbayashi did an excellent job for both the art and plots, just as we can come to expect from her. Whether you ship NozoNico as friendship or romantically, these are worthwhile reads. There's also a panel where Maki makes the most ridiculous face as Nico and Nozomi run off together, which makes me laugh every time.
Sadly I have no means to contact the Chinese scanlators so we can only hope a kind soul will provide. And hopefully a decent scanlator will pick them up.

Predictably enough, all of µ's have ended up in relationships similar to their parents (i.e. KotoMaki, NishikinoMinami, HonoNico, KousakaYazawa).
Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing.
My only complaint here is when Granny Minami ends up accepting Minami's Mama lesbianism a bit too fast for my liking (about 10 sentences). It could have been a plotpoint considering how vehemently opposed she was in the Second Chapter.
While we're on the subject of Love Live fanfiction, is there any story that is legitimately epic? And I use that word as seriously as possible. Something that really justifies the use of that word the way it's supposed to be used, and not just the way people throw it around for the hell of it.

"Epic" is a subjective adjective in the first place, though I am somewhat partial to http://archiveofourown.org/works/4059712/chapters/9136441 (nearing its end) and http://archiveofourown.org/works/4410878/chapters/10017824 (7 chapters and ongoing).
Both are quite longrunning and do fairly well at keeping the characters IC yet getting some interesting worldbuilding done too. That said, I find most angst-for-drama commonly seen in English fics not done very well (please stop killing off Nico), and consider writers who can pull off slice-of-life and adventure stories better. It takes skill to make the simple things engaging. If that is not to your tastes, then these may not be for you.

LuciaHunter is one of those "hipster" authors who, despite their clumsy writing in terms of vocabulary and technique (songfics in 2015?), nevertheless made a name for themselves by virtue of being among the first to write in the fandom, at least in English. I can understand not being able to make it through fics by him/her, the copious use of ridiculous epithets, "orbs" as synonyms for "eyes", assorted purple prose which really should have gone out of fashion last century, and so on, make for a cumbersome read.
Being admin of a wikia doesn't really add so much to their cred as it appears at first glance, though that is unrelated to their writing ability and a story for another topic of discussion.
You're free to try and finish the fic, of course, but my opinion is that you don't lose out in not doing so.
