I felt it was a naturalistic take on the development of a relationship. They've built up a lifetime of rapport with each other, as the flashbacks and references to past events show, and in the final semesters of high school there realistically wouldn't be any unexpected revelations that alter their perceptions of each other all that much, except for the ones that were addressed like their choice of colleges and whatnot. Each chapter contributed another small lesson that strengthened their bond and left them happier and closer than before. Now read the spinoff and watch the anime.

yeah the transition to realization would be very jarring, depends how long the story is developed, she just has to have been the typical popular girl that usually went through more boyfriends than other girls she wouldn't be lusting over cock or anything, pretty much it would be the stereotypical cheerleader type blonde hair that has had the most boyfriends and is always bragging about how popular she is and being all up herself, its just i tend to label these types of girls as sluts.
