/k/ommando here, I am assuming this world is the future what with the raised sea level. But what's up with them having only females in combat roles heck there's no males at all and one of the background girls refer to two women as her mother. How can girls exist when there are no men in this world?

It was impossible to not take the bait. What the point, though? "You expected cute girl doing cute things? But what about cute girl doing cute things but with battleships!?"
>>
>>2028004
It's pretty clearly going darker.
>>
>>2028004
I will anytime prefer something like coast guard sol. But well... I still going to watch it, but baiting your audience like that to generate hype is not nice.
>>
>>2028008
What bait? it was clearly going to be about girls on battleships. Only way you didn't think that was if you only looked at one image of it.
>>
>>2028009
>it was clearly going to be about girls on battleships
Ehh? No. You don't get it. They change site completely, before the airing its look like top one.
>>
>>2028008
What a dumb thing to complain about.
>>
>>2028013
No. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-08-26/hai-furi-tv-anime-character-story-details-revealed/.92137 If you thought girls going into special marine schools to become protectors of the sea with the motto "In the sea we live, the sea we protect, and by the sea we go" didn't mean sailing boats protecting seas, that's your own fault.
>>
>>2028017
Maybe people expected cute girls being Greenpeace, not the Navy.
>>
>>2028017
No, yourself. Protecting the sea doesn't mean war drama, and all of the promotional material prior to the preairing aimed to give the impression of cute girls doing cute sea things and learning to be the oceanic equivalent of Aria's Undines, not high seas battles. Even the name was kept secret. There was some suspicion, but only on the basis of "this might be a >school, slice of life".
>>
>>2028021
"Japan, 100 years after plate subductions caused many other countries to be submerged. To save the remaining countries, the coastal cities that had been built up were launched into the seas, and the seaborne routes between them expanded. With this expansion, a need for personnel that could safeguard the seas arose. Women began to seek employment in this new industry, and soon, the "Blue Mermaids," those who keep the sea safe, began to be a source of admiration for many. The childhood friends Akeno Misaki and Moeka China sought to become Blue Mermaids themselves, and together with others who shared their dream, they enrolled in Yokosuka's Marine High School." http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-01-26/hai-furi-tv-anime-staff-april-debut-story-details-characters-unveiled/.97979

If you can't tell that this was not going to be a pure moe show, it's only because you wanted another pure moe show.
>>
I bet ten bucks the series is going to start killing these girls off just as we start liking them.
>>
>>2028025
That describes coast guards and navel rescue ships, not high seas battle and conspiracy - it's even described as an "industry". Anything overtly referencing conflict was left out deliberately, just like the name was deliberately obscured, the CMs shows nothing of it, and the site had a cutesy presentation - the show made a concerted effort to surprise the audience about its content and (probably) tone. The reaction at the preairing was the same.
>>
>>2027971
I'm surprised there's no Pan de Peace and Unhappy threads yet.
>>
>>2028025
>Japan, 100 years after plate subductions caused many other countries to be submerged
Yes, because of course an island nation would be safe from rising sea levels.
>>
>>2028041
Looks like ANN's translation is fucked. Japan has lost a lot of its land due to plate movement.
>>
>>2028027
That was my first thought as well. I think I'll put this one off until I hear more. If everything about this show is a wildcard I don't plan on walking face first into a bad end.

If and /k/ommandos are still around, just wondering if that was really a dummy torpedo the Harekaze fired? Because it looked like something was leaking out of the training ship and the instructor was reporting heavy damage.

Think someone must have set them up, possibly even have a saboteur on board or something (reason they had engine trouble) We don't actually know why the training ship actually started firing on them, possibly they got some false intel that Harekaze went rouge.
>>
Well that was disappointing. I'm not sure yuri can save this one.
>>
>>2028264

>>
>>2028270
I was expecting what a lot of people were probably expecting. Slow slice of life with seaside setting, maybe light fanservice. Not Girls und Panzer on ships with some kind of conspiracy starting in the first episode.

I don't really follow a lot of anime discussion outside of /u/ but it does seem like most people weren't expecting this. Maybe something to do with sailing boats, but not warships.

is this like GuP but with ships?
>>
>>2028254
The torpedo didn't explode, so it definitely was dummy. The instructor is on an LCS, which doesn't have much going for its defenses.
>>
>>2028254
It was a probably a setup so that the woman could bait them into attacking her ship in order to claim they've rebelled
>>
>>2028463
I hope so.
Akeno does seem to be a lot like Miho, too - a sweet little moeblob until it's time to Get Shit Done. Probably going to be a lot of fighting against impossible odds and getting away without sacrificing a single member of her crew.
>>
>ship is getting shot to hell

That whiplash, tho.
>>
>>2028559
Japanese priorities. You must learn them if you want to be a weeaboo.
>>
>>2028559
Not to mention the first volley comes in and Captain Misaki Motherfucking Akeno takes the time to clarify what Mashiro's nickname is going to be.

But to be fair, they're probably still operating under the assumption this is some kind of training exercise.
>>
>>2028568
>tfw this scene reminded me of the scene when Ramius was questioning Ryan about his books
>>
>>2028463
Except the girls are really meh and the subpar voice acting certainly doesn't help. It needs a lot of yuri or action to be anywhere near as enjoyable as GuP.
>>

Why are the training vessels all WWII IJN ships? I can't think of a single plausible reason other than "because Japan."

He has the highest position of anybody on the ship, which makes him a valuable target.

>>2028729
I think it's too early to make any conclusions about that.
>>
>>2028843
Maybe they're just old training boats.
>>
>>2028857
The entire IJN was either sunk during the war, or decommissioned and broken down afterwards. So unless there is some serious alternate history going on, these are reproductions built recently.
And even though they're training ships, they don't have any of the equipment or technology found on modern ships, so pretty much everything the students learn besides basic seamanship is useless.

translation?
>>
>>2029815

From the description I've read it sounded totally like Aria. (Not that Aria from last season, the other one with the cats and semi futuristic world on another planet)
>>
>>2029942
>>2029947
I don't have a translation but here's a summary:

>Basically, they sings about how even if they're apart they're still on the same planet and breath in sync with each other, and that have decided to chase after their dream together on their own pace, that they will meet and laugh together again, that they will share all the wonderful things with each other, that they will get lost, fall and get hurt together, that things have always felt nice between them ever since the day they first met and will stay that way even 10 years after.
>>
>>2030022
Meh, that's more like a friendship song. Being an asian that's pretty much some song we are forced to sing once we graduate from each level school.
>>
>>2030031
>more like a friendship
Omedeto, you described half of the /u/ material.
>>
>>2030022
For the most part, all-female cast shows are about friendship that looks like yuri, not actual yuri.
>>
>>2030038
I meant to quote >>2030031
>>
>>2029942
>>2029947

I'm hardly the best at song translations, but here.

Our Anniversery

A sparkling world reflected in your eyes
If I take one step forward, the map of the future will open

Dreaming of the size of the hand I held that day
We've always been waiting, till we can give each other the strongest high-five

Even if we're apart, we're surely part of the same world
Take a deep breath together (Now or never)

With the same motto, one two three! Shout it out!

I've decided! I'll make that dream come true
With you! Ever since that time
I'll chase after those fleeting clouds

Here we go! Even if I lose my way
With you! It's an adventure
We'll meet again right here and smile

"Our anniversary", feeling good

In a pinch, the compass wavers
But don't worry, it can only point the way ahead

It's fine to have started out of yearning, right?
I'd rather talk of passion than a textbook

Much further past the dream's goal
Our destination (Last forever)

Let's make the future even stronger than our imagining!

I've decided! Everything sparkling
With you! Let's share it together
Blink and you'll miss it, isn't it wonderful?

You and me! Even if we go slow
In a dream! Becoming close
I'll never forget this day, I won't waver

"Our anniversary", feeling good

What wind was blowing the day our story began?

I've decided! I'm running in a daze
With you! I want to fall
If you don't scrape your knees, you'll never learn!

Here we go! Even if I lose my way
With you! It's an adventure
We'll meet again right here and smile

Ever since the day we met, feeling good
Even ten years later I'm sure, feeling good
"Our anniversary", feeling good
>>
>>2030125
Sounds rather upbeat and not "EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE IS GOING TO DIE" at all.
>>
>>2030127
That's their image song. The ominous song is the OP.

>In a quietly burning world
>This is where it all starts
>When the night sky spells the end

>A beam of light
>A voice hidden in your heart
>Release and tear split apart the darkness

>Rather than wither, might as well
>Wander lost and scattered

>Swallowed by a thousand waves, this heart
>Can't protect even you

>Resound, this unmistakeable impulse
>Like a ringing that won't stop
>Leaves behind an unforgettable wound

>Even now this faint afterimage
>Refuses to vanish
>As the world awaits for the first cry of tomorrow

>Resound, this unmistakeable urge
>Refuses to go away

>Yes, the future and the past intersect
>In this song of the 100th year.

What the heck, how can you not like Mike-chan? She's really sweet and is showing why she was made Captain. Shiro is showing all the signs of typical tsundere though we are seeing backstory to why she has such a chip on her shoulder and no doubt she will mellow out and bond with Mike-chan.

Next episode looks super tense though, it seems to be enjoying cliffhangers. At the least Moeka might be making an appearance and there will be more reasoning behind the "mutiny".

They DID detect the Spee with it. They used the radar to keep the Spee in range.

Remains to be seen why they couldn't spot it until they were in range of the Spee's main gun, though.

How much do you wanna bet that Moka is being forced to lie to lure the girls out?
>>
>>2032427
They can't resort to that kind of thing this soon.
>>
>>2032420
If your radar can't detect cruiser-sized targets outside of visual range in clear conditions, than it's useless as a combat tool.
Likewise for the Spee - if they had a proper radar-guided gunnery control system (technology that existed during WWII) then the smokescreen tactic would've been ineffective.

I have a feeling it is something like this. If it happens it will be the worst, making use of someone's gayness for that.

But I think the Musashi in a real trouble will be more interesting plot-wise, at least we will know more of this mutiny thingy.

It was like a tease, which I (almost) liked better.

She got real close - especially when she didn't really have to, considering she knew the girl was alive and could see her chest rise and fall.

And then she got closer, and closer, and all we get is a smile.

Random faceless men show up to shit on yuri too many times to be a one-off so this anon made a sadly reasonable prediction if the show doesn't know who its audience is and tries to pander to everyone. Strike Witches is the first that comes to mind.
>>
>>2032427
Yeah, I get the feeling you're supposed to think it's a trap but Musashi was also late to the rendezvous so they probably missed whatever ambush was probably waiting for the rest of the trainees and are now trying to get away from them.

Spee probably fired on the Harekaze because 1. They were attacked first by a Japanese ship or 2. They were also captured. This probably is some kind of attempt to start a war, and the girl from the Spee was probably escaping to warn them.

Wow, been a while since we had some good speculah.

* Japan sunk because they mined methane from deep underground, which caused the land above to slowly but inevitably sinks.
* There's no aircraft, other than balloons. So there are no recon planes nor fighter planes, the major weaknesses of battleships. As the basics of aviation is never understood, there are no anti-ship missiles either.
* It's heavily implied that neither World Wars happened.

>>
>>2032496
It is outright stated that the Russo-Japanese War happened.
Planes were a thing by then, and I don't think Japan sinking made them forget how to make them.
And you don't even need to know how planes work to have rockets and missiles. The Sarushima's main armament was most likely VLS batteries.
>>
>>2032496
Sarushima is an Independance-Class littoral combat ship. It has a massive helicopter landing deck with a hangar, and is equipped with a SeaRAM CIWS, a missile-based point defense system designed to intercept incoming missiles or aircraft.
Both of these are clearly displayed in the first episode.

Though it did do a shot of the instructors ship with a guy there but that could possibly be explained as some sort of admin thing.

I doubt there will be any annoying male characters though to ruin everything.

The Mayoiga threads are general cancer. From the anti-/u/ shit that constantly pops up to the fanfiction, shitty edits and general cancerous shitposting behaviour even for /a/. Last I checked they even drew away the single drawfag the assholes were lucky to get.

Anyways this isn't the thread to discuss that/ Haifuri has been 90% comfy and a lot of the nice theories and discussion and speculation takes me somewhat back to Sora no Woto. Somehow I doubt this is going to go all grimdark that people want, it'll just perhaps be subtle.

My favourite crazy yet pluasible theory so far is rogue AI and some sort of conspiracy by rogue military elements to usurp the navy and force a war, and Akeno and her crew are the only ones in place to stop that. She doesn't want to harm the innocent crew on the AI-ships, yet she has to act fast.

I wouldn't go blaming the crossboarders in /haifurigen/ though - /a/ has, for a very long time, had a tendency to be pretty anti-/u/. Again, even when it comes to shows that are pretty /u/-friendly, like Madoka or Hibike.

Mostly because there were folks who'd come there from here and spam /u/ stuff in threads where it wasn't necessarily needed, or would go on about the purest form of love.

Both of which are fine here on /u/, but don't have their place on /a/ all the time.

Ripple Effect

Today too, our world is enveloped by the seven seas
More so than any words, it gently urges me forward
Right, it's the ripple effect between you and me

There's no end to the fierce waves coming towards us
What route should I take to get to the future we have chosen together?
If you've forgotten how to smile, I will laugh for you
Once they bust open, tears will turn into strength and spread out to everyone else

Today too, our world is enveloped by the seven seas
More so than any words, it gently moves my heart, along with the clear sky and that breeze
If you're going to draw your dream besides someone
I want that someone to be me
Because the time of our lives is definitely waiting for us

Japanese nicknames are weird.
>>
>>2034426
Especially when it's just their name with some syllable added to the end, actually making it longer and sort of defeating the purpose of a nickname
>>
>>2034480
From my experience, to the Japanese, nicknames are not always a way to shorten a name. There are times when they are used to make the name easier to remember, easier to read, etc. And most of the time, they are used to express a certain degree of relationship (friendship, family, love, etc).

Well, of course there are always exceptions which are, well, exceptions -_-
>>
>>2034480
It's forming a diminutive for the sense of familiarity, which is the real purpose. It happens in English too.
>>
>>2034480
From where it comes that idea that nickname are meant to "short" long names? They are just cutesy names or something that denotes familiarity and/or a deep relationship between the parties involved. They can be short, but that's not a requisite.
>>
I'm just guessing the actual practical reason Akeno is shortening everyone's names is to make it more efficient giving orders quickly

I assumed it was to make them easier to learn for her, since she was putting quite a bit of effort into learning everyone's names.
