This first chapter just reminds me how bad the first few episodes of the anime were.

They are not as good as late season one or a's but they weren't bad. They do a good job establishing Nanoha as a character, building her background and motivations to match those of Fate.
Of course, Fate is the best part of the season and what ultimately separates nanoha from other magical girl anime but a strong nano is half the reason why this show made such an impact. Without her little character arc at the beginning the foundations to nanofate would be almost non-existent, making their relationship feel far more shallow.
That being said, this re-telling is pointless and I don't see why anyone should bother with it. Say whatever you want about vivid life or innocents but they at least were new content.

StrikerS is mediocre but since you don't have to wait between episodes it's a little better. Obviously the big highlight is Nanoha and Fate adopting Vivio, and there's bedsharing and uh...Subaru & Teana are also pretty gay. There's a few nice fight scenes near the end. 26 episodes. Have fun!
I don't think anybody would really blame you for not wanting to try, or just give up on Vivid. Questionable adaptation aside, yeah, there's a few winks and nods to playing up Vivio & Einhart as NanoFate Mk 2 but even with the lack of any real dramatic plot ostensibly allowing character interaction to be front and center, the cast bloat which was already insane in StrikerS, and which puts series like Saki or Girls und Panzer to shame, compromises most of that, not that they were particularly good at handling ensembles beforehand.

At least some of Vivid's spinoff stuff is fun. And also kind of hilariously unintentionally better at world building since there's a lot of casual and more mundane applications of magic.
If StrikerS seems like a slough, just fast forward if there's stuff going on that you don't care about. Chances are it isn't going to be important in the long-term, even later in the show. It's all training arc and the plot doesn't actually start until Vivio shows up which is halfway through the show. And don't worry about not being able to tell which of the bad guys is which.

Legal trouble? I think it's unlikely, the manga is not licensed anywhere outside of Japan as far as I know, and even if VividTrans were requested to stop translating it by Kadokawa, the members can still keep working on the manga and release it under another name or with no associated group name, this happens all the time.

Yes and no.... legally that is how it pans out since at the time Fate wasn't able to adopt Erio herself (and I have a feeling that this might effect him more than Caro, but no really proof of that). But given how those three interact, she is no sister to them.

And given how Vivid panned out, I would rather them than something that just turned into a bore.

Yeah, ummmm... it's odd for me, I like Teana quite a bit but that has more to due with the fact that I would rather see her undertake more adventures than anything else.
The fact that there are times that Subaru seems to just be so over the top that is overtakes everything doesn't really do much for the Subaru and Teana dynamic as a whole. I tend to find that Subaru is better in small doses than in larger ones, it is one of the bigger reasons that I am not much of a fan of StrikerS. In it for the most part, Subaru is the lead of that and she doesn't have a whole lot of character that isn't defined, in part, by those around her. It doesn't help in giving her dimension and for the rest of the franchise she is rather static.
