Genuine question: would /u/ like AnR this much if the artstyle isn't this good?

Personally I think this series is seriously bland. The core concept is cool, but the execution is... lame. The assassination attempts always end up anticlimatic. The characters don't do anything intelligently impressive. They pretty much only have nice character designs and mildly interesting backstories going on for them.
>>
>>2020167
For me, this is subjectively borderline yuri with girls that were supposed to kill people. This rare concept is interesting, that's all. The artstyle's okay, but the concept is what sells it for me.

But yeah, the author didn't have any guts to kill anyone or show anyone's violent side. I was expecting Tokaku to wreck and humiliate the haughty Isuke, or get a clean stab in early on, but no one ever looks like a mess because it's more of an aesthetically pleasing series. They could have expanded on moral dilemmas like killing to feed your family or on revenge, but they swept it under couples instead of understanding each other through conflict. I am uninterested in flat characters who don't have balanced good and bad sides. To me, the AnR characters are very simple.
>>
>>2020167
Yes, because I am not reading this for bring a cool assassin manga when that clearly isn't the focus.

>>2020194
How the fuck do you read AnR and think none of the characters have bad sides just because no one died?
>>
>>2020167
>>2020194
>>2020225
Side comment. I wonder if this would've been different had it run in a seinen magazine instead of Newtype...
>>
>>2020262
I doubt it. The reason why no one dies isn't an avoidance of violence or heavy material, it's that the appeal of the series is shipping the girls and imagining post-series "what if" scenarios. Permanently killing characters would alienate the dedicated parts of the fanbase in Japan since their ships would effectively be dead.

It simply is not an assassin manga first and foremost. I get being disappointed if that's what you wanted it to be, but I have no idea why people still judge it based on that criteria.
>>
>>2020275
Nah, I'm not that other nee-san. I was just kinda wondering off-hand. I love the manga, and I'm happy with a lot of things with it.
>>
>>2020225
>>2020275
"This isn't a serious assassin series" is an incredibly terrible excuse. You can do a light-hearted series, or a serious series without anyone actually died, without being shitty. AnR is shitty, there's no way around it.

I'm not asking for dead people, the other anon might have just suggested it as a viable way to make the story more respectable, but it's not the only way. The assassination attempts that AnR thought of are simply way too brainless, read like it's written by a middle schooler edgy wannabe, not by a talented writer who intentionally wrote a comedic assassin story. The plans are silly in a bad way, instead of offering good entertainment. The characters, despite being quite badass with their motives and backstories, feel like clowns due to their incompetency.

AnR simply didn't know how to write a respectable loser.
>>
>>2020384
If you hate the series so much, can you just leave the thread instead of coming here every damn month? I know that people are free to have negative opinions in a discussion thread, but some of us in the series thread actually happen to, you know, enjoy it, so your constant bitching and calling it "objectively shitty" is getting to be an extreme drag.
>>
>>2020384
To be fair, most anime/manga suck at writing their villains, the bad guys are OP, but they end up acting like clowns just so the hero can win and there is plot armor and protagonism everywhere. It is not something unique to AnR.
>>
>>2020167
Probably not. I'd still read it for Nio and because of the scarcity of yuri content though.
>>
>>2020384
I dissagree. I found their fights and the way each one of them tried to kill Haru unique. Maybe they left too early, but this is because of the timeline they had to do (12 episodes)

They should have take more time for each assasin to get eliminated than just one epusode. But other than that, it was pretty nice.
you complain about how bad their assasinations attempts wrre, but you dn't say what exactly could change to make it better...
>>
>>2020167

>bad sides
The characters were preserved to remain likeable and Hitsugi and Otoya were let off fairly easily. The execution didn't exactly put much at stake.
>>
>>2020677
What the fuck? Isuke is an indisputably horrible person despite many of her qualities also having positive aspects to them, Sumireko tried to kill a girl simply over her own pride, Mahiru kills people to cover her up her own emptiness and Shinya goes along with it despite not really being into it. Even the characters who are clearly much farther over on the "good" spectrum do shitty things. Haruki kills people despite having arguably noble reasoning for it and takes out her frustration on Haru at one point, and Chitaru valued her "justice" enough that it made her a bit of a hypocrite. Not to mention everyone tried to kill an innocent girl for their own gain, regardless of how successful they actually were.

Hitsugi and Otoya being let off the hook has absolutely nothing to do with whether they have bad sides or not.

Your dislike of the series is making you blind. AnR has problems, but a lack of morally grey characters is not one of them.

>but a lack of morally grey characters is not one of them

I don't think the problem is the lack of ideas. The execution of it all is just downright atrocious. Pretty much everything I love about AnR comes from the characters themselves as opposed to what they did in the story. I love how great Chitaru looks, love how Isuke and Haruki differ yet are so similar to each other (Minakata's relentless shipping of these two helped a lot too), love Haru's determination to not let her family's sacrifices be in vain, and so on. But once the story got rolling, it became evident very quickly that it was not a tale that's going to be winning any awards. The behaviors of the supposed killers defied all logic, relationships were all over the place, and the setup was completely squandered.

I think the anime is actually a major cause of all the problems. Once more money got poured into the project, they probably wanted to play on the safer side and not bury any character six feet under in order to squeeze every penny out of the merchandises.
>>
>>2020741
You keep coming back to people not dying as if it's the main issue here, which makes it clear that you simply want AnR to have a tone it was never going for.

I agree that AnR isn't well-written in a lot of aspects (namely the weird pacing and rampant plot-induced stupidity), but your criticism of it is nonsensical. Relationships were all over the place? How?
>>
>>2020752
>You keep coming back to people not dying

I'm not the same person that was criticizing the lack of deaths before. Don't make that assumption on an anonymous board.

But I do think some casualties would have solved many of AnR's problems. They reflect the actions of the characters in a different light and would help with the atmosphere of the story, which it desperately needs.

Relationships for the supporting characters were all over the place because they ultimately didn't change them for the better or worse when the characters were still relevant. This is fine for some characters, like Isuke, who was a prideful asshole, with just a tiny bit of soft spot for Haruki, from start to finish and that's pretty damn refreshing. But for everyone else, that nonexistent development, especially when it seemed like they had the opportunity to grow with the little panels here and there sprinkled throughout the story, was very disappointing. Showing that they changed in the epilogue is a pretty cheap copout. By then, the audience have already picked out their favorites for almost all non-plot relevant reasons.
>>
>>2020741
>to squeeze every penny out of the merchandises.
And the worst part is that we don't even have that many merchandise. No figures/figmas and most of the stuff are only Haru and Tokaku, the other girls get ignored.
>>
>>2020766
>Relationships for the supporting characters were all over the place because they ultimately didn't change them for the better or worse when the characters were still relevant.
That isn't what "all over the place" means.

Anyway, are you seriously arguing that Hitsugi/Chitaru didn't have a large impact on the characters? I don't think Sumireko & Mahiru's relationship significantly changed either of them as people, but I don't think that equates to it being underdeveloped.
>>
>>2020771
I thought they were all over the places because they kept having these moments for the characters but then did nothing with them, romantic or otherwise.

Hitsugi and Chitaru arc was just executed horribly in the manga. I dont know if Minakata decided she hated them or something. I think that yes, they made an impact on each other, but it was conveyed so poorly that it was no better than the other relationships that went nowhere.
>>
>>2020784
>I dont know if Minakata decided she hated them or something
How many times does it need to be stated that Minakata doesn't write the manga before people actually understand?

Anyway, "it was executed poorly" with no explanation as to why is very nebulous criticism.
>>
>>2020788
Maybe if Kouga Yun were more visible in the eyes of the community, people wouldnt forget that she allegedly wrote the story, especially when they're hastily scrambling together some words to humor a discussion defending Hitsgu/Chitaru's supposed importance.

The Play arc and its shortcomings were discussed countless times before. From the weird panel arrangements to the sudden jump forward with Chitaru finding the bear. I don't really see how any argument was made in favor of their development either. Haru may have shed tears over their departure, but she and Tokaku have reacted to almost everyone's attempt on their lives with varying degrees of emotional growth that brought them closer.
>>
>>2020784
>>2020771
Chitaru/Hitsugi also served to make Tokaku think about Haru.

As for Sumibanba, Banba was getting better from her DID and traumas, but I just don't know why. Was it Sumireko's love or Haru hitting her with the nokia so many times?
>>
>>2020810
Banba wasn't getting better. She was getting worse.

Then in the anime epilogue, Shinya is gone and Mahiru seems to be recovering...why? Well, I don't know. I guess it's the epilogue so they wanted to do a 180 to show the characters "grew"

Goddamn, you are being a condescending asshole in that first paragraph. It is not that hard to remember who to credit for the story, and I'm not sure what you expect her to be doing outside of writing her damn manga.

The last chapter of Chitaru/Hitsugi had completely fucked pacing, but that doesn't invalidate literally everything else about their relationship and arc.

Yes, that was what I meant, I worded myself badly. Banba was better in the epilogue and we just don't know why.

Haruki Sagae

Shiena Kenmochi

Chitaru Namatame

Hitsugi Kirigaya

Suzu Shutou

Mahiru/Shinya Banba

Isuke Inukai

Yeah, Hitsugi, who talks rather masculine, says 好きだよ which is typical of how a boy confesses to a girl. After the kiss, then she says that... there's no inkling of a doubt that she's saying she wants to strip her naked and fuck her brains out.

>Tokaku: I believe her!
>Tokaku: I
>Tokaku: trust Haru!
>>
>>2032412
Yes, I can read. Let me explain what's going on to you.

Tokaku is saying she trust's Haru's word that Haru didn't try to manipulate her.
However, she cannot be sure that Haru's not unconsciously using her yuri pheromones on her, even if she trusts Haru completely, since Haru wouldn't know if she's unknowingly using it..
So, she's going to try to kill Haru.
>>
>>2032426
>However, she cannot be sure that Haru's not unconsciously using her yuri pheromones

You really have to actually read the words.

>Tokaku: Haru says she didn't do it, so she didn't!
>so she didn't
>she didn't
>>
>>2032435
Context, onee-sama. She didn't do it, meaning she didn't do it consciously, as in not intentionally. It doesn't matter how much she trusts Haru, since Haru herself can't know if she's been using it unconsciously or not.
>>
>>2032440
Well, we'll agree to disagree. I take Tokaku's impassioned speech and rejection of the way Nio was phrasing things as meaning that she firmly believes that Haru didn't, intentionally or unintentionally, influence her, but I suppose I can see how it could be taken another way.

We didn't see Sumi grabbing Banba and taking her home. Maybe she will wait for Banba to go back to her own house (does she even have one?) after she got expelled and then send her a mail asking if she wants to move with her.
>>
>>2040674
I'm sure Sumireko had Banba taken to her mansion and tended to by her army of servants until she got home and tenderly loved her back into a single personality
>>
>>2040674
But she literally asked Nio for permission to take Banba home. That means she was taking her from the school straightaway, rather than letting Nio send her home.

I should also note that the way iHoshiku translated the line is a bit strange. Sumireko just literally asked, "Can I have Banba-san?" Didn't explicitly say anything about taking care of her.

There's a reason why Nio acted like she was a fucking creep-o in the next panel.

doesn't matter if she's not technically the person who writes the final version of the story. She obviously talks with Kouga and has input which Kouga respects. If you look at both of their Twitter accounts, you'll see this.
>>
>>2040839
It still doesn't make her opinion the deciding one. Unless the author puts it in the manga or confirms it, it shouldn't be inferred without evidence.
Again, I think there is good evidence. But Minakata's personal opinion is not among it.

We're splitting hairs, onee-sama. There's enough overwhelming evidence throughout the manga that Sumireko cares for Banba and as the manga progressed, we could see she started caring more and more for her. It might've started out of a desire to control or have her as a cute pet, but she's gone way past that. If you look at her face when she's looking down on Banba after Banba's failed to kill Haru, you can really see the love and affection Sumireko has for her. It's portrayed both in the dialogue and the artwork. Kouga and Minakata are pretty much in agreement on these 2.

わたくし
番場さんをいただきたいけれどよろしかしら

It's implied in the context that she was wanting to take Banba home (or wherever) to care for her.

I also think we both agree that Sumireko really cares for Banba quite a bit, so we're pretty much both on the same side against the shitposter.

I agree with you. I think that Sumireko cares about Banba. I just don't think that Minakata saying so is the reason why.
If all the other evidence were not there, but Minakata said she thinks it's the case, I wouldn't consider that valid evidence. But I do acknowledge the in-text evidence that exists.

I have this impression that Shinya would do Sumireko after having all Sumireko's prosthetic limbs detached first for some really kinky bdsm.
