So I've been going through the Kindred Spirits demo and this game is REALLY GOOD.

Good writing and fun characters and good artwork and holy crap it's just so nice to see a great yuri game being professionally translated and officially released in English.

There is a sizable amount of content in the demo too. No sex scenes, but I've been going through it for a few hours now. I believe there's five couples on display in the demo, with at least three scenes each depicting the beginnings of their relationships. My favorites so far are the teacher/student pair and the rocker girl/disciplinary committee girl pair.

Grab it here: http://blog.mangagamer.org/2016/02/02/kindred-spirits-on-the-roof-demo-available-now/

Is there a rule stating that all game discussion needs to be kept to the general thread? There's a lot of meat in the demo, I thought it deserved its own thread.
>>
>>1974385
not everything needs to go into generals miss ocd.
>>
>>1974403
This. Generals are what is killing this fucking site. What are we, rebbit? Some forum? The only theads that should be purged are exact or almost exact duplicates.
>>
>>1974405
Series specific generals being prolonged long past their expiration date are cancer.

But there's nothing wrong with a broad general to cover a similar variety of things that can't otherwise meaningfully sustain individual threads.

Fallout needed its own thread simply because every other post in the game thread was Fallout 4. Or SonoHana which is its own media franchise. Kindred Spirits was never going to choke the game thread like Fallout 4, at least not until the game properly launches.
>>
okay lets all have a counsel meeting to whether this thread should be allowed and if op should be executed for not consulting the counsel first.

Hanabira has 18 games along with short stories, audio dramas, and other related media. Neptunia has 12 games including remakes and the spinoffs no one wants to talk about. Life is Strange is a 5 episode interactive story.

Even these threads can take months to hit autosage. A thread about a demo for a game that might not even have a big following after its actual release? Don't think a dedicated thread is necessary.
>>
A thread about a demo for a game that was just released and no one has said what they have to say about it, rather than rehashing the same talk about the previous dozen games in a franchise that everyone has already said their piece on though.

I'm not bothering to download the demo, but I think it's asinine that you're making a stink about this not going in the general.
>>
>>1974383
It's nothing special. I was excited when it was originally released and started to read the same day. But by the time all the characters were introduced my excitement gradually fell and I dropped it on August.

I'm fearing Flowers threads after Just release with all the "Why is Rikka such a bitch" posts. Hopefully it will be after fuyu-hen.
>>
>>1974383
>No sex scenes
I'm not entirely sure why you needed to mention that. Common sense tells you that they wouldn't put the good stuff in a game DEMO. Because the way you phrased it might make people think managagamer is lying and it's a PG only-game, but it's not (although it's not exactly nukige explicit either).
>>
>>1974434
I liked Rikka, actually.

>>1974424
Yeah. Anyhow, no one can stop anyone from creating threads. Only the mods can do so. Naysayers bitching about it won't change that.
>>
>>1974460
>Common sense tells you that they wouldn't put the good stuff in a game DEMO
It's actually fairly common practice with eroge demos to put samples of H scenes in.
>>
Isn't this shit supposed to come out on steam?
>>
>>1974530
yes
>>
>>1974532
So why the fuck there is no mention of it on their shitty websight? I'm not going to preorder unless I know I'll get the key.
>>
>>1974534
Pre-orders are only on mangagamer, steam keys will show up on premiere, February 12th.
http://blog.mangagamer.org/2016/01/15/kindred-spirits-on-the-roof-now-available-for-pre-order/
>>
>>1974465
Except Kindred Spirits isn't a typical eroge (which is why it's allowed on steam "uncensored", however, it isn't "chaste" either). If you happened to get a peek of a copy of the CGs that are floating around the internet, it's obvious why Manga-gamer would never include any in the demo.
>>
>>1974538
>Kindred Spirits will be DRM-free and all copies purchased from MangaGamer.com will come with a complimentary Steam key when the game is released on Steam.
Well, that's nice.
>>
>>1974538
I'll just wait, gonna buy it on steam probably.
>>
>>1974564
why not buy it on mangagamer and get a DRM-free copy in addition to a steam copy? literally no reason not to if you want the game on steam.
>>
>>1974568
What would you do with the DRM free copy?
>>
>>1974564
>>1974568
I'll probably get it drm-free because I don't want the few acquaintances I have to see I play yuri vns.
>>
>>1974568
Because Steam already has my payment info so there's less bother. I don't even know what kinda payment system Mangagamer uses actually.
>>
I've been dying for a new translated yuri moege for years and years. I hope this sells well.
>>
>>1974598

CC.
I don't have one myself, so -> Steam. You can pay with almost everything there. Mangagamer can't really compete, but that's because they sell 18+ stuff as well. (i.e. Paypal doesn't allow that shit as far as I know)

Anyway, looking forward to this. But I don't think I'll touch the demo. Gotta have some faith? Doubt it'll be on the level of Seisai no Resonance though.
>>
>>1974573
You can also make another steam account to play your chinese lesbian games just like I did.
>>
I played the demo for about twenty minutes before stopping. I just want to be able to read as much as I want and not have to wait a week and a half for more.

I'm really looking forward to the release.
>>
>>1974623
speaking of payment methods: paypal can't be used to pay for pornographic content, so steam would have to use something else as well.
>>
>>1974659

If it ever offers such content, yes. But it doesn't so far. That said I doubt steam would have a problem, because you can just charge your wallet and that's fine.

But that's not relevant right now. Steam doesn't offer that kind of content so you can pay with whatever you want there.
>>
>>1974659
You can get around PayPal in various manners with adult content.
Things that have their own wallet / currency you can buy their currency via PayPal then use that for adult content. This works if they sell sfw stuff as well as nsfw, but not for pure nsfw sites.
>>
>>1974673
but doesn't Kindred Spirits have uncensored H-scenes in the steam version as well?

btw anybody else getting a virus-alarm when extracting the demo?
>>
>>1974683
Define "uncensored H-scenes". They're undoubtedly sex scenes, but they don't show anything more than what you can find in an M-rated movie or even games like the latest Dragon Age or Witcher.
>>
>>1974686
As I have never played the game or read much about it, I can only speculate what they look like.

I was just remembering the huge headlines when it was announced that Kindred Spirits will be the first uncensored game on steam, so I kinda went from there.
>>
>>1974690
I think the CGs just don't show vaginas at all, not even with a mosaic. Steam seems to be okay with boobs, and sometimes butts.
>>
>>1974690

They got you. Steam hasn't changed. It's just that Liarsoft stuff is soft-porn. Though I wonder if stuff like their steampunk VNs could also come uncensored on steam or if it's just ok, because there's no "penetration" in this VN... or so I'd at least assume. I guess they might use toys.. ghostly toys? Well I dunno.
>>
>>1974690
It's not your fault. Anyone reading such a headline would automatically assume "Pron!" is now available on steam. But it's nothing like that. Just imagine romance scenes, that go just lewder, without being explicit at all visually.
>>
>>1974701
>It's just that Liarsoft stuff is soft-porn.
Their stuff is a mix.
>>
>>1974701
>They got you. Steam hasn't changed. It's just that Liarsoft stuff is soft-porn

ah, okay, not that I mind. From what I've seen in the demo so far I'm not going to play it for the sexy bits anyway. Seems very cute.

Oh right, someone who played the demo: How much is voiced?
If I recall it right, this title should be partially voiced. Kinda annoying when that happens, to be honest.
>>
>>1974750
It's just prologue then.

>>1974726
Only CGs are voiced.
>>
>>1974759

So not much at all. Maybe I just disable it completely then. Partial voice-acting like this can be really irritating, especially if the voice-acting is good.

So, I guess, this VN was also on a rather tight budget. Seems to be common with yuri VNs. (even Hanabira is STILL not produced in HD..)
>>
>>1974763
It was especially annoying when you don't see CG yet but hear voice acting already.
>>
>>1974763
Rather than yuri being light-budgeted, this is more case of typical Liarsoft budgeting. For a long time even their Steampunk series(which is pretty much closest they have to flagship) was very partially voiced too.
>>
>>1974763
> Maybe I just disable it completely then.

You won't be able to enjoy the drama CDs nearly as much if somebody decides to translate them.
>>
Wanted to ask, I heard that you can choose between scenes. Is it something like, for example, you are given 2 scenes on a day, and you can pick only 1 to unlock?
>>
>>1974811
There's basically a calendar view of a school year and new scenes are unlocked in the calendar in a logical (but not always chronological) order by watching the currently available ones.

There are typically several new scenes open, but no matter which order you choose to read the scenes in, eventually you'll unlock them all.
>>
>>1974788

This game isn't that old though. But I guess it's right around the time where they transitioned over to "full voice for everything". I mean a short time after it they re-released certain older games as full-voice editions.
>>
>>1974825
Yeah, for some reason I thought this was older. Shame, if they had released it a year later, maybe the game would've been in HD like Gahkthun.
>>
>>1974465
Kindred Spirits ero scenes are toward the end of their respective routes, so they don't want to "spoil the good stuff" so to speak. It's not an ero heavy game at all.
>>
>>1974623
You can email MangaGamer support and they'll arrange for you to pay them through paypal. They give you some kind of code I believe, that way you're not directly buying porn from them, because their site has all-ages games too.
>>
>>1974654
This is why I typically avoid demos unless I'm on the fence about a game.

>>
>>1975035
Yes. On their website.
>>
>>1975029
For the one millionth time, it won't be censored, but the game isn't that hardcore in the first place either.
>>
>>1975029
if you're even worried about that sort of thing, why would you be looking at steam pages instead of buying direct for the vendor, that's incredibly stupid.

i mean, in this case it doesn't matter, but in general... you know perfectly well that any hardcore scenes have to be removed from Steam.
>>
>>1975016
They need to fix the description, since it cuts off.

>Let’s Make This a Yuritopia! Yuna spends her time here on the roof of Kokonotsuboshi Girls' Academy, until one day her lunch is suddenly interrupted by a pair of ghosts. The two haunting spirits enlist Yuna to help them foster more "yuri" couples at the school, to assist girls struggling with their hidden feelings, and

>>
>>1975047

The orange box is usually there for censored products, mostly locally censored ones. There are other reasons that the box can be there as well, and it can obviously still vanish (I mean it's empty), but that's why I wrote "I don't like it". That's all there is to it.

I live in Germany, and while this country is actually one of the most lenient when it comes to video-game ratings, companies still think otherwise and sometimes self-censor because of it. And I'm not supporting that. I'm not assuming it will be globally censored, that's pretty much out of the question.

Love that detail.

Makes sense. Ghosts and electronics react poorly to each other.

How long is this game going to be? Given it's hefty price tag and the fact that the demo is longer than some visual novels by itself, it's probably pretty big, yeah?
>>
>>1975366
~30 hours.
>>
>>1975366
The translator posted on her twitter that the main game is around 20 hours long, and that the game has unlockable scenes that can add around 10 hours to that. These are estimates though, but given the length of the demo, it is definitely a full-length game.

This may be because I'm too used to Sono Hanabira but there's too much brown hair, brown eyes and brown seifuku in the cast/sprite sets. I don't even mind black and white, just some contrast. Some of the height different between the couples seems really exaggerated, like 20+ cm, just eyeballing.

Katahane is a game that follows a group of stage players that travel across the country and is pretty much about their relationships with each other. One such relationship is a /u/ couple. Mind you the game isn't full /u/ but those two have pretty much the best romance of the whole bunch and I daresay the game itself has a better /u/ romance than many of the so called fully /u/ games.
>>
>>1976255
Your description is misleading. Katahane has two couples, one het and one yuri (separate people, not bisexuals). You will see almost no het if you don't go down the het route. The yuri couple is present in both the general portion of the game (kurohane chapter) and the yuri route. The yuri is also the main content of the entire game, both importance-wise and screentime-wise, taking precedence over the politics and the travel adventures.

It's a very well written story overall and every yuri fan should play it.
>>
>>1976271
You're forgetting to mention that the game is essentially also two entire stories, one in the present and one in the past that you have to unlock.
>>
>>1975985

>>1976271
>It's a very well written story
What makes a story well written? Is it even objective? I see this opinion for almost every vn here. Looks like this and 'good characters' are the only arguments people can think up for stories they enjoy.
>>
>>1976354
Well there are some variables you can use to evaluate the story objectively, like evaluating it's prose. For me, I think it's well written because the characters have genuine characters and not just checking off the tropes. I love the way they handled the characters in the story. Their interaction is believable and not static. The dialogue doesn't feel scripted. And the pacing is great. The MC not being a cardboard cut out of a typical MC also helps. Also puns, lots of puns.

I don't really see the need to for people to justify why they enjoy something. You like what you like, and not everyone are equipped to explain why.
>>
>>1976004
I know there is differences in their faces but when your not looking hard for those small differences you get a same-face feel going. Most likely coming from the fact that they also have incredibly similar expressions in this image.
>>
Anyone else enjoying the demo so far? I can't wait till the full game comes out.
>>
>>1976354
> What makes a story well written? Is it even objective?
I always try to be as objective as I can when recommending something. Of course it will never eliminate subjectivity completely (you might find a VN trash despite its immense popularity, or vice versa), but the keyword here is trying. I'm pretty sure you know there are things that you personally enjoy but don't think many others do, as well as things you personally enjoy just like most people will. My personal judgement for Katahane is that it's the latter.

To elaborate on how Katahane is well written, the characters are organic instead of archetypical like what you would find in an average VN/manga/anime. The verses are poetic, and always have a point so you never feel it's pretentious nor trying2bdeep. Kurohane chapter managed to leave a deep impression in me despite being fairly simple. I never expected a touching story of this calibre and in this direction when I decided to try out Katahane. This is one of the best show cases of how excellent pacing can do magic to a simple tale.

While I never become obsessed with any of the characters, I like them all, including those who I initially thought would be annoying.

Tl;dr: this VN feels more like a mainstream novel than your usual weaboo production.
>>
>>1976354
Explaining what's good or bad about writing is hard. Harder than explaining whether the art is good, and you can't just show an example as giving an extract of text isn't effective (except if the writing is simply extremely poor).

How do ghosts have sex?
Are you telling me they've been together for decades and haven't once explored each other's bodies? I mean what do they do on that roof with all the time they have besides stalking living girls?
Can they even take off their clothes or are they just part of their spectral form?
Why can't MC just look it up on her smartphone for them?
>>
>>1974568
Because games on Steam in my shithole of a country generally cost 2x cheaper.
>>
>>1977219
It's all answered in the game, onee-sama.
>>
>>1974573
If RHWM is any indication, it's likely gonna be the same DRM-free copy, so you can just have a shortcut that launches the game directly off of Steam.

>Kindred Spirits on the Roof
>Okujou no Yurirei-san

Motherfuckers. I mean it's not quite "Bakemonogatari" but that's still punbelievable.
>>
>>1978771
Google tells me that the literal translation would be something like "Yuri Ghosts on the Roof". Not that big a change, and would it really be a big deal if it was? Titles mostly exist to be eyecatching.
>>
>>1978789
Is Kindred Spirits a pun on something in particular as well? I wonder if "Lesbian Ghosts" or "Yuri Ghosts" would be harder to market.
>>
>>1978794
It's a pun on kindred spirits meaning likeminded people, and spirits meaning ghosts.
>>
>>1978789
>>1978794

The joke in Japanese is Yurei = Ghost So Yurirei is, well, lesbian soul (or literally Lily Spirit)

The English title is just "Kindred Spirit: a person whose interests or attitudes are similar to one's own" and the fact that they're ghosts.

I just found both puns pretty groan-worthy.

I only mentioned Bakemonogatari because that's another pun (one that actually works quite well in English: Bakemono = monster, Monogatari = story so the best translation for Bakemonogatari would be "Ghostory")
>>
>>1978813
>>1978807
Though the "Yuri" part of "Yurirei" is lost with "Kindred Spirits".

I don't really mind "Bakemonogatari", or even "Ghostory".

Why is MC's love interest chasing down another girl?
>>
>>1978956
Why is sensei's love interest thinks another girl is cute?
>>
I criticized the characters for being too brown and bland and then the rocker chick comes up and acts in such an exaggerated way. I've never seen a girl that referred to herself with the masculine "ore" until now.

>>1978956
It's not like girls just hide in a vacuum with their lovers all story long. They're not even going out yet at this point. I want them to make out already but I don't want the development to be too rushed. There's a dilemma.

>>1978959
She just like cute things, and cute girls in general. With the Sensei-chan it seems like it's a little more than that.

It's as common as boku. You've probably seen them in manga but didn't realized.

>>
>>1978976
Ore is usually arrogant though. It's a male example now but Vegeta from Dragonball always says Ore-sama when talking about himself.
>>
>>1979203
Oresama is arrogant, but ore itself is actually quite common. It's used by pretty much all the Japanese men in informal situations. The pronoun has more informal connotation than arrogant, something you use with your friends but not with strangers and your bosses.

As for oreon, it is far less common than bokuon both in fiction and real life because of the informal and masculine connotation. Anyway, all of these get lost in translation for English.
>>
>>1978976
> It's as common as boku.

Not for girls though. And for girls and women in real life, using boku or ore is extremely rare, almost exclusively as part of some sort of act.
>>
>>1979222
>real life
Who was talking about real life? Tomboys use boku, hardcore tomboys use ore. Girls using ore aren't that uncommon.
>>
>>1979222
>>1979224
The anon was just trying to say that oreon characters are not as common as bokuon characters, which is true. Also, oreon characters are actually quite uncommon when you're looking at Japanese subculture.
>>
>>1979256
>oreon
>bokuon

Finally played the demo. Goth girl and rocker girl were the best girls MC is supposed to be helping. The white uniform ghost girl is close to being a yandere.
>>
>>1980250
Who has issues with queer, other than butthurt guys on 4chan? Even the tumblrpeople like it.

And poltergays would have been cute as fuck. Might have been too gay for some /a/nons, though.
>>
>>1981439
They are the only ones Yuna could even do anything to help.
Kiri and Tiny Sensei are a lost cause: I don't think Yuna or the ghosts can do anything against the "it's a phase" argument.
The sports girls seem to already be pretty much set. They even have a long term plan. All they need to do is to come clean to their parents, and Yuna can't help with that.

>Megumi is close to being a yandere
I've watched Grave Encounters and Paranormal Activity too many times to know it's a bad idea to annoy a ghost.

Sure, MangaGamer, sure.

I know they have to say that for legal reasons, but it's so transparently not true it's hilarious.

I'm curious whether the original text mentions ages at any point. I know I was really surprised when they actually implied Megumi's age at death as 15 in the English version, but I suppose they could get away with that because she's a ghost.
>>

Commercial eroge will generally avoid mentioning ages for students, and tend to avoid terms that make it obvious what type of school they go to (such as whether it's a middle school), but it's implied anyway.

My weeabooism flared up when I saw "Bon Appetit" earlier, but I can't help but feel like leaving "takikomi gohan onigiri" completely untranslated isn't much more weeb than leaving something like "itadakimasu" completely untranslated.

I powered through and cleared absolutely everything, including the extra scenes. My advice is to save on a new file whenever you see a choice, because to get 100% you have to make all choices in the game, and it's much easier to just see what scenes you saved at then having to go through every single main scene (even skipping) again like I did.

Also I added it to steam but am too scared to play my lesbian VNs where others can see me.
>>
>>1984016

I'm going through the extra scenes you get after clearing the game now and I'm shocked by just how many there are.
