Hail to our new PrecurexCitizen couple
Gotta say, this was one of the best final episodes Precure has had since Heartcatch. A shittonne of glorious sakuga in the first half, a nice sombre ending and no forced in het romances.
The series as a whole was pretty darn good. Some good consistency in the battle animation quality, a good fair amount of subtext and some nice storytelling too. If you've felt burned by HappinessCharge, you might wanna give this a chance.
No one loves Haruka/Minami anymore and that makes me sad

There is a farewell scene between Haruka and Kanata, but it's not really done in a romantic manner (unless you have het goggles turned way up). it's more of a 'thanks for helping me out with my life and whatnot' kinda thing (no sudden confession from the tennis guy either).
There's also a lil post credit like-the-all-stars-movies-give-a-shit-about-continuity-anyway time-skip, that really just shows the girls adults without giving anything away about their lives (other than Yui writing a book). Basically it makes good on the morals given in the episode about the book author, letting viewers come up with their own conclusions about how the story goes from there.[/spoilers]
I really hope this gets a good amount of doujin material. Could very well be the next YuriMomo.Also fuck the Commie subs

I do wish that Toei would do a proper "years later" sequel like they're doing with Digimon atm, instead of just keeping everyone perma-young for the All-Stars movies.
So far there is two sub versions out of episode 1 of Maho Girls Precure:
one by Imagination Station and the other Shimakaze. Anyone watch both? If so which would you recommend? Were they both good, is one troll sub, etc...

I only watched the Shimakaze subs. They were passable; the odd mistake, and some things I might have translated differently, but perfectly watchable and overall fairly accurate. I can't speak for the other subs though.

Watched Imagination Station since it was the only one I could find on Nyaa at the time. Aside from that habit of localising the monster-of-the-week's name, it's a pretty good job. I suspect they'll both dwindle out soon and we'll go back to Doremi eventually.

Well it's more like they do that even when we know time actually progresses in the main series. For example, Max Heart noticeably took place in the year following Futari wa. When you have that knowledge, the fact that noone seems to age after 8 bloody films is kinda distracting.

It's been awhile since I watched a Precure. The new series is c/u/te, but damn the setting feels weird.
Looks like Doremi dropped MGP, too bad. They were rather useful and consistent on timing. Guess they will concentrate on re-making Doremi from DVD raws.

This is the gayest Precure since Doki Doki. It doesn't help that Cure Miracle looks like Cure Heart a bit.

As someone with an interest in magical girl yuri but new to this series, does anyone have a quick rundown on which seasons are the best/gayest and which to avoid like an odd numbered Star Trek movie? 12 years of backlog is a little overwhelming, but intriguing at the same time.

Doki-Doki is the gayest (though you'll need to adjust your expectation when you see other precure series if you start with Doki-Doki), Happiness Charge is the hetest and avoid it at all cost (unless you got nothing better to do)

Splash Star for the story
Heartcatch for the stunning character design
Smile for the comedy
And Go Princess is pretty darn good too.
Of all of them, I'd say Heartcatch serves as the best introduction to the franchise.
It's hard to rank them by order of overall greatness, but I'd probably put Yes Precure 5 at the bottom of the list (HappinessCharge, to its credit, does have some nice gay moments. Given how highly we regard Splash Star despite a blatant boy crush, I'd say yuri levels and het levels are seperate values). I'd also reccomend putting at least another season in between viewings of Futari wa and Splash Star just so the similar elements don't spoil your enjoyment.

Well, Splash Star is high in the yuri ranking because the boy crush in it ended up going no where, and has little to no impact on neither the story nor characters while the girls' relationship kept steadily developing further and further throughout the story. Not to mention all those character songs, music clips, and the "totally-not-gay" manga version.

Futari wa may have been eclipsed by later series in various categories, but as far as I'm concerned, none of them has a more interesting relationship than Nagisa/Honoka. I adore the way spending 52 episodes with only each other to rely on against actually threatening villains creates an almost symbiotic relationship between the two.

There is a prominent male crush over its two seasons, though by the end of Max Heart Nagisa pretty much decides to give up. Noone particularly gave a shit because NagiHono was so much better and more well developed.
Most of the other seasons try to work in a crush in some way or another, but it's either not well developed or or lasts for about one episode tops and they never commit anyone to a relationship by the end of the season (it's practically nonexistant in DokiDoki). Sadly the het crushes in Yes and HappinessCharge are not as easy for yuri fans to overlook.

Yeah, but as you said, it's just a delusion. Doki manga is essentially a story of a womanizer chasing after different girls in the name of friendship each chapter. Most of the gay are just delusion or one-side. Mana herself didn't get really gay until Regina, though, for whatever reason, she looked like a creepy rapist trying to brainwash a little girl.
I guess you could argue that Doki manga was more gay but it certainly wasn't as "romantic" as SS. As for the het department, in SS, Mai's brother appeared for only 1 page saying some irrelevant things while in Doki, Rakeru turned into an ikemen and princess carried Rikka.

Excerpt from a recent interview with Canno (Ano Ko ni Kiss to Shirayuri wo mangaka) and Nakatani (Yagate Kimi ni Naru). They talk about Precure as an example of how it's nice to find yuri in ordinary works. Canno's favorite character is Rikka. She found her jealousy and worries over Mana's relationships with other character to be extremely yuri.

The only non-disputable canon lesbian in Precure franchise is Rikka. Regina, though, was annoyed when she saw Mana hanging out with Makoto, and as soon as she heard comments on how they loook like a couple, she nearly went Selfish. In the manga, she was annoyed at Mana being totally focused on Makoto during the latter's welcome party, then when she saw Mana feeding Makoto, she immediately envisioned Mana in a suit marrying Makoto, holding her hand to cut the wedding cake and giving each other First Bite. The imagination distressed her so much she stood right up and ran out from the party, shocking everyone.
All other yuri-ish girls in the franchise, including Regina, could be 50/50 interpretted as only having deep platonic friendship with the other girls. But there's no way you could argue Rikka's crush on Mana as anything other than romantic.

I tend to dislike harem too, but Mana is one character for whom I can actually see it working. She isn't some bland idiot that the girls all like for stupid reasons, or has some bullshit power that makes her strong.
She actually puts effort into helping everyone and exudes charisma, making it actually believable that they'd all be attracted to her.
