Probably not Mamori. When she was Driving with Akira the last time, it didn't look like a huge pink column of light. If anything, pink seems Charlotte's color. Or Mamori's when she was Driving by herself and that "Valkyrie effect" happened.
Though I'm probably thinking too much into it, and in reality the visual effects of Driving aren't important at all.

Well I checked through 1-9 drive scene and I have found that pink light usually come when there's affection between people involved like Noe and Nimi, Lady Lady, Charlotte and her harem. MireiMamo is also pink light when Mamroi transform but after she turned to sword there's that blue light. When Akira drive with Mamori the blue light didn't appear.
Red light appear between S&M, and AkiraMamo. Health&Fitness emitted green light. Walter's grunt's that turned to standardized guns emitted yellow light, just like when Lady Lady transform on their own and when Rain drive with Mirei and when Meifon drive with money. Also in ep 8 after quick kiss with J, Rain emitted yellow-ish almost orange light.
The pair that appear in ep 6 emitted pink-purple-ish color. Charlotte and Momoka emitted purple light.
In flashback scene Momoka emitted red light before she turned back into person.

About that, Lady Lady beam cannon also have different colors. Green when used as Disarmament Buster, pink when used to break the rocks, and blue in the OP. Momoka's beam cannon is purple in ep 9, but in the OP it's green. And Mamori cannon in ep 2 is blue.

It's definitely not a cannon. These usually have two colors, one very bright, almost white (the beam) and another one darker to give them some volume.
That light seems to be more or less even, besides, no point in firing a cannon straight up. Those sparkles near the edge of the column kind of look like transformation sparkles or Mamori's... teleport or whatever it was.
Maybe it's one of those new characters Driving/using their ability, or maybe it's Kasumi's loli.
As for the colors, it's probably just their way of distinguishing between different moves/pairs/characters. Like... I don't know, transformations in mahou shoujo anime.

Good episode, I guess. As expected, they're having to cram all the plot in now and speed through it as a consequence of spending half the season in throwaway fillerish stuff. Because of that there was literally no time for Mamori to have a proper reaction to finally learning Akira's gender. Well it's a good thing that she was more concerned with Mirei's well being than with sorting that shit out, but there's only two episodes left, so I'm worried they won't be able to show the ramifications of all these reveals and encounters that have been happening and how they affect the characters. They could have easily skipped at least the bullshit festival episode to give themselves some more time now. Oh well.
Also this kiss was adorable. They were like little schoolgirls.

This ep could of easily been split into three at the expense of shitty filler deriving from the main plot.
part1 - Entirety of the ep focus on Kasumi/Char/Momo; more flushed out and more of Char reigning supreme
Part2 - Mirei/Mamo and Lady n Lady both get a better fight scene, perhaps against rank A's and of course better dialogue between the protags

I think you didn't get what the other anon was saying. Queen's Blade was a fanservice show, but it had better pacing, plus ironically, it was less light-hearted and a tad more serious overall. Takeki never liked to make his shows more pure-mindless fanservice. And I'm thankful for that. VD is not a pure mindless fanservice show. If not, there'd be no Yuri at all. Because everyone would have the equivalent of 100% slapstick comedy silly behaviors, and thus no character development can happen between the cast.

Kasumi is like Mirei. Strong, tough, love their Exstar waifus tremendously, and are rather protective of them. However, their taste leans towards the wallflower variety of girls. What I believe they did wrong was that their first priority was fanservice in the beggining.
Just like Seikon no Qwaser that wasted a very interesting fights/plot just for the boob sucking.
I'm not saying VD is the same as SnQ, but generally I think it's better to keep shows without plot as fanservice, and focus on the plot way more than fanservice in shows that have a strong premise of plot.
VD didn't go that far of the fanservice though to be fair. Only the Nimo giant episode and the festival were fillers. Also it'snot easy to develop a good anime only in just 12 episodes

I'm not saying that Nimi was a completely useless character, but whatever "worldbuilding" she contributed wasn't important. She did help provide some character development for Mamori, though, and that episode had clearly established Kasumi as the good guy (for those who were too dense to realize it before). Both of those, however, could've been handled in a way that didn't waste an episode on beach shenanigans and giant girls (however cute they might have been).

Why do we care about the genre of this show again? I don't remember the stating the genre of this show. The only thing they specified is what this show is about. Which is girls turning into weapon. So far they have stay true to that.
The showed us nice giantess story, fun chinese jew adventure, typical shoujo manga romance plot, etc because they can. And because they wanted to.
Doesn't matter that this is not romance anime. Though I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the boobs in this episode. Akira's areola were much bigger in ep 7. I can tolerate QUALITY everywhere but the boobs, they got the boobs master helming the project and inconsistent boobs is the worst thing that could happened to this show. Thankfully Kaneko said he was going to fix the inconsistency in BDs.

Instead of focusing on "the everyday lives of the common girls on the island" (which it already did in episode 3, and later in episode 6, an even worse waste of time than episode 5. Not to mention that it wasn't actually "focused" on anybody life but Nimi's; common girls only appeared in the background), it could've given the same amount of character growth but presented it in an actual subplot relevant to the main plot. For example, it could've been used to learn more about low-rank residents of Veste, since Noe and Nimi both interacted with them at some point.

Throwaway plot devices that barely have any personality besides things that Noe infodumped aren't great. Not to mention they were promptly forgotten after that subplot ended.
