There are a few problems here.
First, Yuma doesn't actually seen Hotaru as anything other than a friend, they aren't "seeing each other". Second them avoiding each other would be even more suspicious, because they are constantly together and then suddenly keeping their distance after the rumors start--that makes it look like they got caught doing something and gives the rumors more fuel.
Takeda isn't going to want to stay with Yuma if Fujiwara says something. The two are close friends, why would he not trust Fujiwara's word, especially when Takeda already has suspicions that Yuma is cheating on him, and has already seen that the two girls are extremely affectionate and close (and has also seen that Hotaru gets somewhat annoyed when he comes between her and Yuma).
You're also approaching this situation from what I assume (based on you thinking that it's a shitty plot device) is a western perspective. The way you appear to those around you means a massive amount in Japan, it is a culture that has operated on the idea of public appearance and shaming for centuries. Being labeled different, even by a rumor, means a lot more in a society like that.

They're aware exposure, interest and support comes from fan efforts and 4chan communities like the Monster Girl threads of old where some guy from Seven Seas was talking about how the awful excess of puns in Monster Musume volume four was some Chief Editor or something that thought he was really clever for knowing an itsy bitsy nursery rhyme that has been toned down and republished now that everyone else has seen what went live.
Monster Musume is still being scanslated so only if the scanslator takes some moral high ground that no one asked for.
