I never defended that scene in my posts criticizing the comments about "seriousness" in VD though. It was just a dumb attempt to pander to the hetero rape doujin audience in a show made for yurifags, which is pretty dumb because the show was marketed as an ecchi yuri show from the get-go and thus people who don't like yuri are not gonna watch it anyway. Meanwhile those who ARE watching it likely wanted nothing but yuri and found that scene disappointing.
I doubt they'll repeat it, to be honest.

I don't know why some people can't accept the show for what it is, and need to shove it into either a "comedy" or "serious" box, for that matter. It has never meant to be either. Ridiculousness doesn't always equate humor. I don't exactly feel like laughing my head off when I watch VD, like the way I do when I watch genuine comedies that are real goofballs.
Neither do I feel it's serious business with any kind deep philosophical, introspective thoughts. This is really not the show for it. It just has moments that make me giggle, and others when I get invested in the characters.. and so on and so forth.

Exactly! An Exster transforming is only 50%. But you just get her as a coaster. Even Lady J needs Rayne to ride her for full functionality. The other 50% falls down on a Liberator. I believe ordinary humans can neither get an Exster to transform, or, even if the Exster transforms on her own, a human won't be able to succeed in using her.
So, that's where the Liberator comes in. She as a Liberator, is the only one with the ability to drive her Exster. And a more powerful Liberator can drive her harder, like unlocking special techniques and powers, beyond ordinary wielding.
However, as shown, an Exster needs to like her Liberator/have some inner/common connection, or drive cannot happen.

The main pairing they're marketing towards us doesn't seem to be an official couple, yet their kissis are rather passionate.
I understand Mamori is fawning over the supposed male governor but I feel that every kiss she shares with Merrie shows that two care deeply for each other and Mamori will eventually shift her feelings to Merrie.
I know this is an ecchi fan service genre (with yuri elements) so the series isn't really taking itself seriously but least it can do is provide development between the main couple they're marketing towards the audience.

Also the talk of soul mates in this episode seems to have sparked Mirei to start actively trying to get Mamori's attention rather than just hoping she'll notice on her own.
