Nothing? I guess they might be too edgy or dark for some people, after all they're mostly about murderers and killers of various kinds.

I guess the references and obvious influences from old films might grate someone.

They're the kind of thing, along with The Matrix or Donnie Darko, that you see when you're fourteen and it really affects you, but by the time you're an adult you should probably be past them. He writes for older children, basically. He's competent, to be certain, but hardly anything else.

>>72094776
It's usually better to focus on either a movement, a time period, a director, or a genre because you actually gain insight into different arenas of filmmaking. You'll understand how directors differed, what attitudes where prevalent in what part of the world at what time, or just how a director's techniques and sensibilities changed over time and/or the prevailing stylistic or thematic concerns of the catalogue. It ends up being much more rewarding than just randomly collecting unconnected films with no relation to each other.

Currently working on gendai-geki films from 30s-60s Japan. Primarily Ozu, Naruse, Mizoguchi, and Kurosawa -- anyone know of any other directors I should check out in this sphere?

I'm married, but the relationship is polyamorous. Which means that my partner and I date other people. My first date with my partner was 12 Years a Slave (lol, what a date movie). This is not an exhaustive list, because I can't remember them all, but here's some films I saw with somebody who I was dating at the time.

If you have questions about poly, I'm happy to answer but bear in mind that I'll be selective in what I choose to divulge vis-a-vis personal info about my dates.

You should try adding some context to the notes. Like why they were important films for the genre/of their time (if they were) or why did you find them meaningful/good in the context of the genre they represented.

I've thought it was one of his best since I first saw it on DVD in 2007 or 2008. The longer cut released on home video is superior to the theatrical, in this case. It has more stuff with Howard Cosell and includes a fight the theatrical omits.

The one thing that is unique in this film compared to others in Mann's filmography is he does something with planes of focus in every shot, where one thing is in focus, then he switches to something in front of or behind it.

I don't think it's a perfect movie and it doesn't achieve anything super special, but I just like the music, the story, main characters and their chemistry between them.

Fruitvale Station 2013 ½

Watched Dec 20, 2013

Molly’s review:

Even if the last days of Grant's life were held up under inspection, this movie would still lack in its relentlessly positive portrayal of its subject.

A great look into why modern day black culture is so cancerous to America & why the black community seems to think they are victimized so much when they put themselves into said situations, screaming, "YO HOMIE I AINT DO NUTTIN" after getting into a fist fight or refusing to cooperate with a simple police interaction.

This biopic is about how one criminal who doesn't know how to act around the police gets what's coming to them after acting like an idiot followed by the entire black community making them out to be a hero & a "victim".

I could go on, but this movie speaks for itself; Don't break the law, don't be a public nuisance, and don't act like an idiot around the police and maybe you won't get shot!

>>
>>72119286
I've never really delved heavy into coming-of-age stuff (and a lot of it depends on what you consider 'coming-of-age', but from what I've seen it would probably be:

1. Cidade de Deus (City of God)
2. Dazed and Confused
3. Dead Poets Society (It's nothing excellent, but it's a very nostalgic choice, seen it countless times)
4. Stand By Me
5. The Last Picture Show

What about you?

Which was better; Green Room or Blue Ruin?

Zodiac is also pretty damn good (Probably Fincher's best), yet to see Prisoners.
>>
>>72119577
personally i liked green room more but blue ruin was just as enjoyable, both have the regular people in extreme situations theme that i really liked. Blue ruin honestly has no business being as good as it is with how barebones the plot is and the fact it cost like 400k to make, im definitely a fan of saulnier now

also highly recommend watching prisoners asap, i put off watching it for a while and i regret it.
>>
>>72119442
I've been meaning to go back and watch Dead Poets Society. I kind of remember seeing it as a teenager.
I've got The Last Picture Show on my watchlist. Will get around to it eventually.

Ah, excellent. I liked Green Room, the situation was pretty interesting, and I loved the whole punk backdrop as I used to be involved in the hardcore/metal scene when I was younger. Will have to give Blue Ruin a shot.
