Ghostbusters flopped!

Let's see you try to make make $46 million a weekend. How is this a flop? Sony was projecting 38-40 million.

You know literally nothing.

I bet you think that if its budget was 140 mil, and it makes exactly 140 mil, that it wasn't a flop.
>>
>>72088046
funny how the media is reporting a win
>>
>>72088083
Hollywood Accounting.
Sony loans out the budget to make and market the film to a production company, because it's in the 100s of millions they charge something like 30% interest.

The estimated cost of the film was $144m
So you double that to cover the P&A (print and advertising) budget, which is usually as much as the production budget.

So we have
>144 + 144 = 288.
>+ 30% interest of loan = ~$374.4 million.
>Now I think the studio only gets 60% of the ticket price, depending on the individual distribution deal they negotiate with each cinema chain.
>They need to make $624 million to break even!
>Yes, they probably shave off a few hundred mill with international sales agreements in other territories.
>Point is, they need to make like $100m this weekend to have enough momentum to make back the rest.
>>
>>72088402
Not only that, but Jews aren't in this business to just 'break even'.

there are other shows that apply to this but i'm not gonna name all of them

the movie would have to make 100 million in the next week just to make even, and that's not counting the marketing and merchandise budget, as well as the fact that theaters take about 25% of the revenue and that execs don't want to break even, they want tons of profit.

It's a flop because it has a 144 million dollar budget and will never make that amount after such a poor opening. Not to mention the marketing and merchandise budget that went to shit because the products were in clearance from stores weeks before the movie even came out.

Honey, Sony themselves admitted that it was going to flop when they released their projections. They realized them riding on the feminist bandwagon backfired spectacularly.
>>
>>72089849

>>
>>72090277
>Friday estimates have come in and Ghostbusters is right on track to match Mojo's expectations with an estimated $17.2 million Friday, pushing toward a weekend right around $46 million. While these aren't exactly blockbuster numbers given the film's $144 million production budget, they aren't exactly dire numbers either as director Paul Feig's films tend to deliver solid multipliers. In fact, the film's "B+" CinemaScore matches the CinemaScore for both Spy and Bridesmaids and is just below The Heat's "A-" and all three enjoyed solid legs. Ghostbusters is looking to deliver Feig's largest opening of all-time and the same goes for star Melissa McCarthy.

Why do you want it to flop anon?
>>
>>72090193

The opening gross is less than Pets, which is in its second week and has had its revenue cut in half. Ghostbusters will see a similar or worse fall-off. It also has a budget twice that of Pets. It's a fucking flop and you're an idiot. End of line.

>This is his most profitable movie yet

Which doesn't mean much considering Ghostbusters is a summer blockbuster, and his past projects weren't even close to this size. Beating Bridesmaids, The Heat, and Spy aren't his measuring sticks. Beating Secret Life of Pets this week, and staying relevant the next week are, and he's going to fail both spectacularly.

Historically, summer blockbusters have been very front loaded, and with the entrance of Star Trek and Ice Age next week, Feig is on suicide watch.

Movie jail, or director's jail, is that state of existence directors wind up in after a major flop. For a while, maybe for a very long while, no one wants to talk to them or give them any projects. The late Michael Cimmino basically never got out of director's jail after Heaven's Gate took down United Artists.

Movie studios have to share profits with movie theaters. Opening week they get the most money. Usually %90-%10. Every week after it changes by 10%. That's why opening week is so important.

Ghostbusters, which Sony was relying on to be a tent pole franchise that want to have spin off into at least 4+ more movies, shouldn't be losing to a bad kids movie that is already in its second week.

Movie Jail is the place directors go after they blunder spectacularly.

Then they get to make whatever movie they get, and passion projects are nearly impossible.

But, Feig may actually be facing the Movie Gas Chamber now that he said Sony restricted him from making Kate McKinnon's character gay.

>Hollywood Accounting.

Sony loans the money to the production company. The production company uses that money to rent the studio, equipment and hire crew at inflated prices from Sony. Sony keeps a good chunk of the budget and gets to write everything off in taxes.

Budgets are wildly inflated. No movie ever makes money on paper. Every LOTR movie lost money, every Harry Potter movie lost money.

Look at recent films that by studio logic should never get sequels but do too figure out what actually is profitable.

100m over the "reported" big budget movie is in the break even area for a studio film.

200m is when they start considering sequels.

300m + would be considered a successes for Ghostbusters and would probably earn it a slightly lower budget sequel.

>I'm not too familiar with how the box office works. Is this bad for a film of this budget or not? Thanks in advance for the replies, amigos

Looking at the stars, the director, genre, markets released, budget and box office history you can estimate what the studio was looking to get out of the movie.

300 million would be a mild success.
400 million would be a pretty decent show and would probably green light an immediate sequel.
Anything over 500 million would have started a Ghostbusters shared universe.

Current projections put the movie finishing its box office run at 200 million at best. It's not a very strong showing for them.

60% 2nd weekend drop is pretty normal for a big budget movie.

Star Trek and Ice Age are opening next weekend.

You could potentially see closer to a 80% drop. BvS had a 70% drop.

How much did Fant4stic make
>>
>>72093636
>What did American audiences mean by this?
You can roughly estimate how successful a film is from its opening weekend numbers. It is not very precise, but you get a range.

1. No matter how horrible the film is, in general most films will at least gross twice its opening weekend. This includes Fant4stic, Catwoman, and Elektra. This is basically the number of people who make the mistake of watching the film without knowing it sucked.

2. The average film can earn something like 3.5 times its first weekend numbers. At this level of popularity the important thing to stay profitable is to keep the costs low. Most films are in this range, if the audience expectations matches the film's quality. Both major blockbusters and indie films can be in this range. Even failures like Fant4stic was in it.

3. A surprise hit, one that was under-estimated and suddenly gain popularity AFTER the first week, can have a final gross number 6 times that of the first weekend box office. Or major properties like Star Wars might have packed theatres in the first weekend and as such under-estimated the number of people who wanted to watch it but couldn't.

Using this very rough guide, you can simply take the debut weekend box office of any film, and just multiply it by 3.5 to get a likely project of final gloss. It can be more or less, but it is useful as a guide. For GB2016, they have a filming budget of 144million. If they stuck to the average estimation then they get something like 150 million final gloss. That would not cover the production, let along advertising.

Went to an early morning showing of this movie today, paid $7. Wanted to just get it out of the way and try it.

It's not even PURE GARBAGE or anything like that. It's just forgettable and boring. The jokes (which are smug, juvenile, and ubiquitous) just don't work, the slapstick and physical comedy is just groan-inducing and annoying, the characters are one-dimensional and flat, the effects look like shit, and there's tons of padding everywhere because the plot is just so thin.

Kate McKinnon, to her credit, gets the ONE joke that actually made me laugh, and possessed Hemsworth is actually kind of cool, but overall the movie just feels like a 2-hour SNL sketch.

The cameos are awful. Murray and Aykroyd are as distracting as possible, utterly shredding the already-bad pacing. Hudson at least has the decency to show up at the very end of the movie just before the credits, where he can do the least damage.

Everyone will forget this movie happened in about a year, just like Oz the Great and Powerful.

Batman v Superman is so bad DC may have tanked their entire cinematic universe already.

You can bet your asses WB Exec's are fucking terrified that Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman might flop. Batman v Superman's gross was frontloaded as fuck and dropped HARD, only meeting the absolute bare minimum of box office expectations. It was entirely sold on hype and goodwill from fans, and the movie was complete shit, and everyone knows it. Everyone saw that Sad Affleck meme video, and the cultural consensus is, by and large, that BvS sucked. Is anyone really excited for Suicide Squad or Wonder Woman? Even fucking Justice League? Do normies know that movie is coming out? They're already a billion in the hole for this franchise, and it's not taking off like they hoped it would.

I'm not gonna say it's gonna flop this early, but it's gonna be hard. 2 weeks before release is The Rock's Baywatch. 1 week before release is the next Pirates of the Caribbean (which is 50/50 on success) and a new Seth Rogen comedy. Opening up against Wonder Woman is Bad Boys 3 (however, has not yet started filming) and Captain Underpants.

1 week after release is World War Z 2, which may not make that much if it's the same quality as the 1st. Then, 2 weeks after is Kingsman 2 and Cars (Fucking) 3. The following week has Transformers 5 and finally 4 weeks after is Despicable Me 3. Essentially, unless Wonder Woman is legitimately good, it has maybe 2 weeks to make all its money.

WB can't push it earlier to March or make it fight its own Kong: Skull Island. May is suicide by Marvel and The Rock. They could have put it to August and I'm not sure how many successful movies move release dates twice (as originally WW was gonna open up the week of Transformers 5).
