Technically speaking the war was against the tyranny of Aerys II for his murder of Rickard and Brandon and the demand that Jon Arryn kill Ned and Robert. Prior to those events things were being dealt with peacefully. Remember Rheagar had Lyanna for months prior to the first banners of rebellion being raised.
Rhaegar abducting Lyanna as much as Robert would have people believe it was the start of the war was more of a precipitating event rather than the direct cause. Aerys II madness was the real issue.

Prior to that this was a family issue, Rickard wanted his daughter returned or restitution for her abduction, Brandon wanted justice, but they didn't raise their banners in rebellion, they went there peacefully to take their case to the king. The rebellion started when Aerys II had them killed and demanded Jon to murder Robert and Ned who were his wards. Jon called his banners in rebellion and that's when the rebellion started not because of Lyanna's capture.

One of the greatest tragedies is that the whole imminent Others invasion wasn't toned down, implied and a danger on the wall, but could happen 20 or a 100 years from then would have been more mysterious. Make it seem like some bizarre ancient mysterious force and focus on the general plot as a trilogy. Cut out Slavers Bay, and some other seemingly pointless plotlines.
Seriously, the first couple had some great atmosphere, interesting locations and an array of characters, the books needed a time jump and this could have been achieved by keeping the original story to a trilogy. Then making a new series bringing up the same characters years later, like ending with the Red Wedding and the collapse of the North? The next series pick up a decade later with Jon Snow Lord Commander and forced to deal with the Boltons to get any funding
