I'm late to this conversation, but you're right - Apocalypto felt very authentic, from casting to sets to the language. Such a good movie and morphs into a fantastic chase/action movie. It was stunning how many critics shit on it for completely unrelated reasons and really turned me off from film reviewing in general.
Similar to now, things outside the film dominating the discussion and "reviews'. It seems so obvious but a movie should stand on its own merits for good or bad. At the very least this will be a good litmus test for which reviewers are worth bothering to read (if any).
