The writers added Jaime's attachment and devotion to his incest family, when bookJaime literally says

He might have wanted at some point to be their father, but he never got or tried to be. So his distance makes sense. But showJaime loves his kids (and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's a fine character decision) but you have to make consistent decisions once you give a character that trait.
BookJaime abandons Myrcella in Dorne and Tommen in KL because Cersei orders him to Riverrun. The only conflict here is that he might have to break his oath (he asks to be sent anywhere else, and Cersei insists), not what might happen to his darling kids. He doesn't care.
But ShowJaime does care. He cared in s5 when Myrcella was in danger and cared when she died. He is ordered to the Riverlands, but I really don't think grieving father Jaime would go. His thoughts are about his murdered child (neither Cersei or Jaime ever mentioned possible retaliation against Dorne even though both characters love their children fiercely) and about the child now int he clutches of a religious extremist. His decision to leave and abandon Tommen and Cersei (whose crimes he still doesn't know about) is a complete 180 from season 5. It fits with bookJaime, but does not at all fit with ShowJaime
