Hence Aerys was a lunatic. Although you have to remember that when Arryn declared war he had the entire Vale, the entire North, most of the Riverlands, and all the Stormlands behind him. That's most of the continent. If it was the Lannisters, Dorne and the Reach would still ally with the crown and everywhere else has no connection to them at all so whether they'd even care about Jaime dying or whether they'd side with Aerys simply because they'd not want him going after them next is up in the air.
