The best thing about ASoIaF is that evil characters are evil for real reasons, not just because they're insane or greedy. Well, the grid comes from D&D, and in D&D, evil isn't so much a philosophical quandary as it is a verifiable quality. For instance, all demons are evil irrespective of anything else.
