What did you think of this movie? I have really enjoyed most of Paul Thomas Anderson's work especially There Will Be Blood and Punch Drunk Love. This one did not grab me the same way the rest of his catalog did.
Still thought the acting was absolutely incredible though. I think it might be Phoenix's best performance.
Overrated trash, deservedly forgotten. It's no wonder the actor died from being a junkie. Not sure why you felt compelled to make a thread about a nothing movie that made no impact, but I guess it fits in with the capeshit motif of the board -- mindless trash movies for mindless trash people.
Amy Adams filmography is unmatched. She never does bad movies.

Trash desu
>>71139180
I love it. Really weird great characters. Phoenix is so tense, its fun to watch. Anderson is the shit.
>Still thought the acting was absolutely incredible though
I really think the acting just carries the movie. I pretty much don't even pay attention to the plot.
I think Anderson still has a masterpiece in him. Every film of his completely nails a certain aspect, The master=exciting characters, TWBB=mood, cinematog, etc. I hope he is around for awhile.
as far as the script goes, it was dreadful. but i think both phoenix and philip were amazing in it.
>>71139947
His other movies may not have the consistency of acting prowess but I find them more enjoyable because the plot actually matters.
Comparing apples to oranges since they're different roles but Phoenix performs way better in The Master than in Inherit Vice but I find the latter more enjoyable because the film as a whole is simply better.

I was gonna applaud it for being the best acting in a PTA movie but then I think about Dano and Lewis in TWBB. DDL is on the same tier if not a rung or two higher than Phoenix in this and Dano can contend with Hoffman and it's a better movie. The script is not "dreadful."
>>71139180
It's more deserving than you think.
I saw it in theatres and was let down. I loved his work before I saw it and I was expecting more. But then after seeing it for a first time I was pissed. It was good but not as good I was hoping.
But after seeing it I kept thinking about it. Couldn't stop.
It's just so beautifully made. Watched it 5 times since. Same goes for Inherent Vice.
>>71140105
Rich?
Was Dodds speech about how marriage is like a dragon supposed to be foreshadowing how full of shit he really is?
>>71140057
I haven't seen Inherit Vice but I heard the general plot is a bit messy by design and the story falls to wayside. They may have been wrong but idk
This film is the best film of the last 20 years. It will be on the next sight and sound list. I dont know why everyone here is saying it just alright. I thought it was a masterpiece. Can someone explain to me what the didn't like in it?
>>71140416
It seemed misguided. Didn't know where it was going.
If this was in a vacuum, it would be better but unfortunately or rather, fortunately, PTA has a wide filmography of better films that makes one think this film would be better,
Pleb alert. I was confused how he was riding a motorcycle into sunset and the next scene is a timeskip or something.
The Apollonian trying to assimilate the Dionysian, but instead being corrupted in the process and ultimately giving up, resigning itself to tolerate the wild, unpredictable part of the human soul
Masterpiece
>>71141284
Everyone hates you so fucking much
>>71139180
amazing
>>71139180
While it's one of my least favourite PTA movies I can't deny that Joaquin Phoenix's performance was fucking legendary.
I don't think he'll ever reach this peak again.
Also that last scene
>either you're in for a billion years or you're out
>can you really live without a master?
>Freddie wandering in the streets drunk out of his mind once again
Fuck I want to see it again.
Reminder that PTA is directing a movie with DDL about '50s NY fashion scene.
>>71139180
You have to watch it knowing that it's all an examination of Scientology and cults in genera
Seeing the whole thing from Phoenix's character's perspective puts an interesting spin on the situation

It has nothing to do with Scientology. Fuck off.
how do u rank his films?
i dont think i could but the master and PDL are at the top for me
>>71142532
The setting and most characters are loosely based on Scientology.
PTA used a fake cult in order to free himself from any possible lawsuit and to have more artistic freedom.
That paid off.
i think i would place it as
the master
PDL
IV
TWWB
boogie nights
hard eight
magnolia
I love this movie, one of my favorites

Phenomenal movie. Basically PTA's 2001. It's about man's struggle in the world around him. His subsequent seeking of religion to help ease his struggle and eventual poisoning by said religion. Then an abandonment of religion that leads to the birth of a new man who can use the best aspects of religion to further ascend in life.

I thought it was a wonderful movie. The acting is as good as you'll find in any movie, the cinematography is gorgeous, the score was uniquely effective, and there's so much emotion packed into these powerful outbursts of scenes. I do feel it falters some in the third act, once they get the writing for the next book and have the publication party. But the very end is strong once again.
Now Inherent Vice is another story. It's flawless. Once again, acting is great, as are the looks (from set design to camera movement), and the soundtrack is amazing. But this movie is wholely entertaining. It's very funny, and so much fun is to be had in deciphering the story. It wasn't confusing for the sake of being confusing; at any one point, it was clear enough what was taking place. The unclear part was how things fit in as a whole. It's hard to tell which side plots an characters matter, just as Doc is unsure whether these big, webbing conspiracies are real, or just his hippy delusions. It's infinitely rewatchable, and I can't get over just how fun it is to watch and pick apart.
Inherent Vice>The Master>There Will Be Blood
I'd say those are PTA's best, all masterpieces in their own right, and he's only getting better each film

ill post the cinegrid last

Not as good as pic related, but The Master is still an astoundingly powerful film

hope its better from here, also suggest watching the deleted scenes from the film

I might've preferred The Master, but is it goes it starts to lose steam and retread things it's already gone over. After watching IV 4 times, it still hasn't gotten old, and I feel I have nice grasp on the plot. There are still some missing pieces, so I do want to go back over another careful time, but for now I'm hopping throwing it on whenever because it's so lighthearted, has great scenes at any one moment, and actually has some nice emotion to it (specifically the ouija board scene, which I see not only as a good scene on its own, but the point the movie really becomes fun, less focused on establishing things, and more so on a frenetic and exciting pace).
>>71143828
>>71143910
rly nice man, i agree alot about the film losing steam but that and the 'no plot' plot aspect of the master makes me love it all the morei had sex to inherent vice this weekend, a memory never to forget

So stoked. Last film I heard he was doing was the script for Pinnicco. But he then dropped that.

Oh totally.
PTA is the saviour the medium/art.
Just finished TWWB.
Imagine if this movie came out in the '70s-'80s. I mean, the most technological thing (besides Alexa cams) PTA is using is steadycams.
Imagine if fucking Inherent Vice came out in 1971.
>>71147613
>Imagine if fucking Inherent Vice came out in 1971
We would have a 2016 remake with Doc being a fat black woman and Eddie Redmayne as Shasta
But no, seriously, this guy is going to be remembered, it's not even at his peak yet
