I feel watching a filmography in chronological order improves the experience a lot. You get way more out of the film as you see the director progress from film to film. I keep noticing things I hadn't noticed before when I went through few directors recently (I had seen their popular films without the context of their earlier work)

What does that mean?

All I did was question whether Linklater's latest film could be good considering it sounds like a rehash of 3-4 of his previous works.
Someone obviously couldn't handle even that.

I already have My Darling Clementine watchlisted, but not really interested in too many other Ford flicks tbqh.

Waking Life is an excellent film, the said Before Trilogy doesn't find any sense as a fluke considering the quality of the films before, after and amongst it, and your capacity to understand and appreciate Ford must be taken as very suspicious at best, given your mental disabilities to recognize quality :)

I rotate my favourites often but; The Wrestler is great for me for how effortlessly it moves through emotions. He's like a man with two sides constantly battling it out who both can't seem to figure whether he's really winning or losing in and out of the ring. I adore how his character exploration doesn't occur doing the sport he's invested in-- which seems something that happens often in sports dramas- but through working slowly into the cracks of his personal life and filling them in with the things he's lacking. Like family. Ultimately though, he feels like a piece of shit but through wrestling he can feel like a hero and accept that despite all these setbacks in his personal life, he can still be appreciated and loved for what he is.

It's a pretty raw undiluted film (I mean damn Rourke is in his 60s doing stunts) and has a lot of touching moments. Personally the boardwalk scene with his kid leveled me because I had a tough relationship with my father.

Station Agent is definitely something good to watch when you're feeling a bit lonely I think.

Is it possible to truly appreciate and understand film without ever having experienced love?

when so much of cinema (particularly art house cinema) revolves around human relationships and intimacy and desire, how can you really claim to understand it when you have no frame of reference or experience yourself?

Yojimbo, to pick a single film, is an intelligent look at the Japanese perspective of the Cold War, and this is told through its images. It's funny how the VA ircfag who now detests both ircfags and VA still can't manage to gain any knowledge about this medium, or any sign of taste.

>Will To the Wonder--or TO THE WONDER, as the film's end credits have it--finally dispel the aura of reverence that has settled over the cinema of Terrence Malick? The late creation of an artist can act as an alembic, concentrating and thereby heightening the qualities of his former work, Robert Bresson's L'Argent (1983) being only the most imposing example. And To the Wonder, like Andrei Tarkovsky's Nostalghia (1983) and The Sacrifice (1986) (both of which Malick has drawn from, particularly in 2011's Tree of Life), distills all that is intolerable in its maker's films. Ironically, To the Wonder is positioned as a departure, the first in Malick's oeuvre, aside from a few uneasy sequences in The Tree of Life, to be set in the present day. That apartness--Terry Does Contemporary--serves to reveal that Malick's stylistic traits, previously identified as auteurist signatures, appear too often tics and affectations. What Malick's disciples praise as his ambition and sincerity increasingly registers as feigned naivete, an untoward belief that his fervent romanticism can renew such exhausted tropes as a van Gogh field of sunflowers, a Milton tree of life, a Gauguin South Sea paradise. The unfortunate effect of To the Wonder is to cast a retrospective pall over the director's work, to underscore the tendency in his earlier films to banal symbolism, manufactured rapture, and middlebrow aestheticism.
