I think the books have made a point several times now that almost no region has properly prepared for the winter because of the distractions of everything else going on and because lot of those food stores are being sent off to armies that don't ever return.
Only Castle Black has done so, because winter is basically the thing they most dread of all.

I'm done with this series, though. They killed off Ramsay in the most predictable way. They didn't get my favourite character any retribution against him.
One of the best characters in the show didn't get any revenge, but Sansa did of course, even though she hasn't had nearly as much time with Ramsay as Theon did.
Theon and Ramsay's stories are intertwined for a reason in the books. But nope, they fucked it up.

The actual battle has absolutely nothing to do with Ramsay or his arc. However I did like how Ramsay's actual death was because he had starved his once-loyal dogs in a way that made them betray him. It's a parallel to how the North is disloyal to him and he only rules by fear. Ramsay's final death is because his servants turn on him for being cruel to them. It's a little pottery.
