Only thing I felt a little annoying was that the spearwall became bowling balls with the appearance of the Vale cavalry and none of them reacted at all. I can't figure out what era or nation the "Northmen" are supposed to be based on. Like everything else in the show has some kind of basis. Usually the North is pretty much Scotland with some Norwegian/Swedish thrown in. But not in combat apparently. Also the whole cavalry charging into cavalry...thing....yeah...
The spearwall bothered me a lot because Jon's army just...lets them do it. They just stand by and let them. The wildlings prove to be super fucking effective shock troops, why didn't they just break the lines and get in between them BEFORE the wall formed instead of trying to deal with it after?
But it also looks like they have massed shortbows or some shit like why but also crossbows but crossbows are only for castle defense and the only longbow in existence belongs to Ramsey because...?

Keep in mind a lot of what we know and understand of warfare from historical time periods (such as this one albeit historical fiction) comes from trial and error.
A lot of the know how isn't going to be 'known' to them.
You have two bastards who are still quite young 'leading' an army. Although they do have men of higher ranks from other houses/bannermen with more experience. Still, we don't know what they know or don't know.
In the middle of a battle such as that, it's a little hard to be critical on just what one should and should not do. I can imagine the mix of adrenaline and panic coming into play while being attacked and surrounded by the looming spearwall formation.
Wildlings aren't the most effective at fighting 'southerners' so it stands to reason that while in that state of mind, it wouldn't be difficult to manage to surround whatever was left of jon's army.
Also, it's a tv show. I hate to bring that up seeing as you actually had something reasonable to point out as opposed to most, but I can't help but bring up the fact that some things bend in the favor of suspense and excitement for the show and to keep you on the edge of your seat.
I can't in all earnest answer your issue with the bow/crossbow though.

To be fair the Umbers were right there on the corpse wall in fresh reserve. It made things even easier for them, but without it they would still be surrounded or contained. Turning towards the anvil of the Bolton infantry would have made their backs open to the phalanx/shieldwall which would be even worse than attacking it head on.

I guess it's also possible a lot of the in-universe warfare is how it is because it just isn't like our universe's warfare. The GoT universe is much more stagnant than ours was. Cavalry vs. cavalry might just be a thing in it. A really stupid thing but whatever.
Davos appears to be the only true general, and he does in fact put forth a lot of tactical know-how. Jon's just good at fighting and has like a B- level knowledge of tactics, but he let Ramsey beat him psychologically.
It's entirely possible Ramsey just got fucking lucky with his shield shit, just like EVERYTHING IN HIS FUCKING LIFE. Like how Shitjon Umber didn't shank him for murdering his bannermen with his archers. D&D ruined one of the better houses in the North. I'm glad they kept the Manderlys just a name drop. It's like watching those mummers in Braavos play out the ASoIaF books sometimes.
In retrospect I should also be more confused how they got those shields in position. Those are fucking heavy. There's a reason they stopped being in use in the medieval era. You have to carry that shit into battle. They outran the wildlings and Davos' archers with giant fucking tower shields...

A few possibilities for why Sansa didn't tell Jon about the vale:
1. It was a condition of little finger. He told her they would help but only in a position that was very advantageous to them. This probability isn't a reason, though, since the shield people were exposed for a while before the rohirim charged them.
2. She didn't know if he'd actually show up and didn't want to get anyone's hopes up.
3. She's manipulative and wanted to use him as bait.
4. She thought it might make him even more aggressive than he already was. "Sansa will be safe, so i don't give a fuck about myself." Idk, maybe.
I think it's probably a combination of 2 and 4. Maybe she was wrong about 4, but it still could be what she was thinking.

It can be tragic and is the only way Sansa's decisions look less retarded in hindsight but that just makes her a lot less likeable, probably moreso compared to how she used to behave in season 1. That doesn't feel where her character was intended to go.
