It's German (and possibly other languages as well), simply meaning cinema. Both words are ultimately derived from old Greek "kyne" meaning "movement" or "motion" in reference to the phenomenon of moving pictures, which is also where the modern English word "movie" comes from.
Trivia: Germans invented their own, non-loanword term for cinemas/movies: "Lichtspiel" meaning "play of lights", and therefor a "Lichtspielhaus" is a fancy way of saying cinema.
