Black Orchid edition
What does /who/ think of Black Orchid?
Do you enjoy pure historicals?
Should the new series do more historicals?

I wonder how this dude felt when he was revealed to be Davros in the opening sting before the episode even began proper. He must have spent the entire opening credits mad as heck

He's a fogey who yells empty threats at Tories and still thinks Marxism has any chance of becoming popular again. Not hard to tell off.
So why does 5 have the most meh stories? Awakening, Visitation, Frontios, Terminus, Four to Doomsday, King's Demons, Planet of Fire.
>>70952773
hi gareth
>>70952773
>Visitation, Frontios
These are not meh
>>70952952
They're as meh as Graham loves to jack off to Karl Marx. When was the last time anybody ever said Frontios was their favorite story of that The Visitation was something they'd show to casuals?

I know it's an unpopular choice but Black Orchid is my second favorite 5th story (after Androzani).
I loved the way that the Doctor was just a sightseer, the events would've probably all turned out exactly the same whether he was there or not.
The fact that there was no massive universe threatening disaster or paranormal/alien mystery behind everything was a nice change of pace and doesn't happen often enough in the show.
I want to be gangbanged by all the Doctor's and their various timedicks.

>>70954064
I agree. Is there an episode comfier?
Plus the infamous Nyssa mastermind headcanon makes it all a lot better.
>>70955773
pretty good, karen

Reminds me of the guy who said he would punch his tv if the Statue of Liberty was a Weeping Angel.
>>70952426
>black orchid is pure historical
>plot hinges on their being a tardis
I liked the episode but felt the inclusion of the Tardis detracted from it being a pure historical
I'd like them to do a historical where the doctor keeps on thinking there is some alien involvement but just turns out to be regular humans (like it can be a running joke)
>>70956582
>implying Historicals will ever return to tv
>>70952426
Top comfy. It feels fitting that they did a pure historical since the Davison Era was in many ways Hartnell 2.0.
I know where to get it, if you want it.
>>70957907
What?
>>70953130
Cats, cloister and the time wasting troll are asleep, you mean.
>>70957977

>>70957907

>>70956582
>I'd like them to do a historical where the doctor keeps on thinking there is some alien involvement but just turns out to be regular humans (like it can be a running joke)
There's a great episode of Torchwood
>tfw the Doctor is gonna have to put up with both Bill and Nardole, a never ending questioner and a straight up retard
>>70958703
it's gonna be GOAT
>This world is not what you think it is. You must wake up! Doctor!
The Doctor, Bill and Nardole land on the Proxima Centauri planet, where they find out people are taking a "Joy" pill. When the Doctor and Nardole are both forced to take the drug, they start feeling better and see the world in an utopian way and they even want to stay here. Bill is their only chance, but can she save them in this town where everyone is looking for her?
Reminder Peter Davison says that Terrance Dudley just took a shitty old script he'd written in the past and just added the Doctor and crew in, badly.
Source - The Life and Scandalous Times of JNT, is one source.

>>70952426
I would like to see a pure historical, especially when I think new who tries to have too many elements in a story.
>>70959729
Do you think we could ever get a pure historical in the current climate which would not depict a false version of history so that millenial special snowflakes wont get upset?
Sounds like trolling but it isn't. Except the 'special snowflake' part....
>>70959663
I guess you guessed correctly m8.
>>70959864
pretty much, It's a shame we won't get a tv story like the 'Council of Nicea' or 'The Manarin Conspiracy'
They don't even have to be 'pure' just be about the history. Thats why I liked human nature, you really got a sense of the time.
>>70959864
Moffat said in DWM awhile back he had an idea for a historical but wasn't sure if he was ever going to use it. He could whip it out for his last series I guess.
>>70959961
Looking at asBill and Nardole - we're fucked.
>>70960056
Why couldn't we get a historical with them?
An historical doesn't have to be 'famous event' or 'meets famous person', in fact, those are limiting parameters as history is unlikely to change.
A story in an historical setting can be many more things.
Murder mystery. Heist caper. Bodice ripper. Travelogue. Etc.
But there is no appetite for this kind of storytelling as far as I can see.
It's wacky 'Bill and Ted' or 'Back to the Future' stuff, in case viewers get 'bored' with a strong story which doesn't rely on an alien or wacky historical figure.
>>70960082

the editing is worse than the cgi. last time I saw it I swear there were scenes that were out of order
>>70962793
i've only seen it once and can't really remember much outside from the twist ending desu
>>70962793
Also the Doctor switcheroo thing was lazy writing. They had the Doctor act really out of character (be threatening towards Amy) so that her and the audience would think it's the ganger and then at the end they go "lol we switched, youre bad for judging me on false assumptions :^)"

Hello homosexual anon.
If you had a TARDIS, what would you pick for the exterior? Given you had a buggered chameleon circuit so the appearance is static and that the blue police box is much too iconic and would get you spotted instantly.
>>70965675
maybe a generic metal box, to keep incognito
or maybe a vending machine.
>>70965675
What would you pick?
>>70965675
A vending or soda machine.
>>70965769
A porta-potty since anon beat me to the vending machine.
>>70965769
Why?
this is a super neato topic
>>70965831
They're everywhere in modern times, big enough to step into, iconic in their own right.
>>70965876
>They're everywhere in modern times
that is not even true of the Earth let alone the universe
>>70965830
i was thinking port-potty, it would be best for a disguise since you would see them anywhere. the downside would be people trying to use them.
actually now that I think about it, an arcade machine would be cool
>>70965868
if you are 8yo
>>70965916
ok now im thinking that a fridge might be good, if people see it they would just think its scrap, although again it might be taken away.
>>70965767
Maybe a cardboard box? I can't really think of much on my own is why I started the topic.
One of my crazier ideas was just to have the TARDIS disguise itself as a piece of clothing such as a three piece suit. Then you're always literally wearing your TARDIS at all times. Since the suit is the exterior, to enter the interior dimension the suit would just teleport inside. Like how the Doctor has put the outside on the inside a few times, this has the added advantage of making the TARDIS literally inaccessible while he is inside it he has to come out to let you in. This is a big double edged sword though.
>>70965916
>the downside would be people trying to use them.
Out of order sign should take care of that
>>70965911
More so than a blue police box though right? Anywhere industrialized on earth surely. Most aliens we've seen have mouths I'd assume they too would have some beverage dispensing machine at their respective planets/ships etc.
>>70965916
Hang an out of order sign on it? Who wants to use an out of order porta-potty? A fully functional one is a last resort.
>>70956034

Some might say that expecting everyone to have your frame of reference posting obscure mod era films for reasons that seem only applicable to one's self, insane. However the line of questioning still stands. What's /who/ with you?
>>70960219
exactly. Historic episodes always feel a bit dumbed down imo, with characters and situations often reduced to parodies of themselves and the main characters reacting accordingly to it. It often feels like the Doctor and his companion are visiting movies about the past instead of the real deal.
Which is nice occasionally, I liked the Robin Hood episode, but it's a little grating that it became the standard.

>>70971343
Yes! Assuming it's for the christmas special? Or is it regular series filming? I was late to the party seeing Matt Lucas being back on board. I wonder how wallaims felt being "the life long doctor who fan" green with envy to say the least I'm sure.

So no word about the christmas special? They're kind of running out of time, hadn't previous years specials begun filming by now? Surely there;s post work to be done.
>Squeak! Squeak! Squeak! The bumbling duffel-coated Nardole is back!
So... he goes squeak. Is that all they have right now? I wanna know Nardole's history - is he from Darillium, or some planet River visited, or what?

I thought so. Another fantasy.
>>70972022
I've heard about that, too and maybe he's playing the guy character in Class! But nevermind about that, how are you? We haven't talked for ages.

>>70972111
I'd bet on that he is. Supposedly the only one featured in a trailer as well. I'm good, can't complain aside from the obvious tedium. How've you been?
>>70972222
Yeah, seems like he is too. Ah I'm glad to know that, don't even waste your time with him, seriously. I've been doing okay lately, but with exams week coming up I'm gonna be stressed as fuck.

Good luck with the exams. I'm sure you'll do well. Hope you're studying and /who/ is providing an adequate break. After that hope you have a great summer. It seems to have started early here.
>>70972681
Thanks a lot, Cloister. Well you're providing a nice break since it's all been kind of shit lately in here. Oh? Well profit cause it's rainy in here :/

Just back on /who/ after finishing work.
Phuck oph anon. Pearl Mackie has had excellent reviews. Still unsure about Matt Lucas tho.
>>70973030
Last year there was a series to push discussion along. We've been thirsty for news for so long, having no direction. This along with the uptick in 4chan users, to /pol/ for the us election/ politcal conventions and /tv/ with GOT along with kids out of school for the summer has given /who/ has a case of the summer time blues. We've lost about 10 posters since may.

Fuck I hadn't realised... I may leave too, come back in September. I really don't want to spend any more time in here when there's the sun out there.

>>70971434
Cloister the stupid?
Being totally honest here.
Was hype about Pearl Mackie getting role as companion. She has had good reviews, altho she is a relative TV unknown.
But Matt Lucas in a big role?? WTF are the Doctor Who producers thinking? AARGH.Hopefully, he only has a minor-ish role, could cope with that.
>>70975709
Meh.
It's not like he can't act or anything.
>>70975709
he's gonna be GOAT
>>70975709
I know, my excitement dropped big time when I heard he was gonna be a regular. Especially the fact he's returning in the same role he had in the xmas special. I hope I'm proved wrong but I'm really skeptical at the moment.
Dr Chris E, you there?

To be fair everyone hated the idea of Donna becoming a companion in S4 and she seems to be rather well liked these days. Doesn't mean Nardole is definitely going to be good or anything but I don't think we can definitely write him off either.
>>70976927
The difference is that Donna's character was slightly more in depth than
>squeaks
>mumbles
>splutters
>bathroom humor level of comic relief
I'm not saying there aren't places to take Nardole's character, but it's gonna take a lot for me to accept him as"good" in any way.
>>70975015
>In the ship I have a selection of items that you can oppress me with.
I laughed so hard at that line.
>>70976927
Yeah, I'm not writing him off yet, I'm just not thrilled about it. Though the Donna thing is pretty different imo. Personally I liked her well enough from the get go and don't see S4 Donna as a big change from that appearance. And even if you didn't like her at least she had some sort of character then and memorability. Nardole was like some unappealing wallpaper you look at once and then stop registering is there.
>>70976927
But Donna got a whole episode dedicated to her and a somewhat introduction to the character.
Nardole got barely a minute of screentime, and is probably the most forgettable character off the special. Can you even pronounce his name? Cause I can't.
implying Nardole isn't going to be a comfy bro companion
I hope Talalay comes back to direct this year. She's doing Sherlock though so she may not have time. I wonder if Nick Hurran or Toby Haynes will ever come back?
The one S10 director we do know about (Lawrence Gough) is pretty underwhelming judging by his previous work.
>>70977361
Talalay is based. She just gets how the show is meant to look.
I hope they get her for the finale.
They definitely will if she gets at least an Emmy nomination for Heaven Sent.
>>70977217
It's pronounced like it's spelled, isn't it?
>>70977217
>Can you even pronounce his name?
Nard-arse-hole
>>70977416
Someone needs to take away her GoPro though.
>>70977012
what do you think went through the heads of the people responsible though? Do you really think they want to introduce a recurring character just so he can mumble his way through the season? Because I think it's much more likely that they realized the role didn't do Matt Lucas justice and now want to correct that mistake by giving him another chance.
>>70977906
Okay, sure, let's follow that line of reasoning. There's different ways to do that which don't involve making that character a companion in some way. Take Rigsy, for example; regardless of how you felt about his character, they felt there was more to be done with him and so they brought him back for ONE episode. They didn't bill him as companion for S9 or anything like that, they just brought him back and then let him go.
Bringing Nardole back as a companion in some capacity just feels forced and out of place. He brought nothing but childish humor to the special. That's literally it. And that's fine within the confines of the special, but there's NO character to expand on there. And that WAS okay, because it was just a "hohoho look what famous comedian we got for the Xmas special!" type deal. But bringing him back? It's just stupid.
Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I doubt it.
>>70978263
>There's different ways to do that which don't involve making that character a companion in some way.
Like being a recurring character who isn't a companion?
They haven't actually billed him as a companion. We literally know nothing about what his involvement in the series is other than that he's guest starring in more than one episode.
And honestly claims like "there's nothing to expand on!" are just naive. This is fucking Doctor Who, you could easily just make up that he became the boss of the Shadow Proclamation in a series of wacky off-screen events or something equally out-there. If anything, the lack of a detailed character just means Moffat has more of a blank canvas.
>>70978263

so what is the alternative? They obviously want to work with Matt Lucas again and Matt Lucas wants to work with them, that much we can infer. Do you want them to create a new character for him? I mean, they could do that, but it seems kind of pointless to me.
>>70976905
Yeah?
>>70979012
Hey. Here's a snapshot of the 3 with Liz fic:
I stared at the silver walls that surrounded her. It had been 3 days in this room. At her feet was the plate of food and water that her captors had been giving her ever since she came here, three times a day. The food was serviceable, and the drink of water was barely potable. The people here wanted ME alive, but barely. Actually, I had no idea whether the people here were human, and based on the advanced technology, i was pretty sure they weren't.
The door opened up. A guard came in, and hoisted me onto my feet. I was pushed out the door and into a passageway. couldn't see his face through the helmet, but she could tell from the stance of the soldier that he wasn't in the mood for trouble. She walked her down the hallway,
Broken machinery litterred the outside. A grey mechanical sky , filled with gears floating in mid-air, towered over the scientist. The air was cold, and i grasped my grey overalls to herself, trying to stay warm. There was a feeling of gloominess all around, of decay and darkness. In the distance, I could hear the sounds of whirring. It chilled me more than the frost did.
In front of me was a man in a grey armor. On his head was a silver crown, and his skin was shiny, with a spiky beard. Instead of hair, a substance that looked almost like stone jutted from his face, and his eyes were red, like hot pits of fire. He stared at Liz, looking at her up and down, surveying her.
“My name is Empereor Gnida,” asked the man. “What is your name? Where do you come from?”
I looked around. Other creatures of the same race as Gnida were staring at her. Some had looks of derision, others of fear. Turning her head back to Gnida, she said “My name is Liz Shaw. I work for UNIT, a company on planet Earth. There's a friend of mine, called the Doctor. We came here, because we needed to find out if the Daleks were here. Where is he?”

“How interesting?” said another one of those creatures. He had the same shiny skin as the king, but covered with blue markings. i guessed he must be a second-in-command. “Because we asked the Doctor, before he escaped us, to help us get rid of the Daleks.”
“What did he say?” I asked. I could feel the crowds of soldiers approaching me, and the tension in the air. Random spikes of rusted armor riddled them, and looked like it had been put together randomly. Th weapons that they carried didn't have any standard size or shape, some wearing longswords, some wearing small laser knives, some wielding hammers. All of them seemed like they would probably kill me if I tried to run.
“He refused to help us defeat the Daleks. He said that he would never help us. Which leads myself and General Xion to believe,” said the king, motioning toward the soldier with the blue marking, “that you are working for the Daleks. Now, I do not wish to be too hasty to make an enemy. Simply tell us where the Doctor is, and we will do nothing to harm you.”
His dark red eyes pored into her. There was a simple leisureliness to the way he spoke, and I could almost believe it was honest.
“If you refuse, however,” said Xion, “it will not be pleasant for you.” There was a sliminess to his voice that made MY skin crawl. Unfortunately for me I had no idea where the Doctor was, or why he wouldn't help them fight the Daleks. Not for the last time today, I really wanted to slap that foolish alien.

they did this shit easy enough with freema playing the chick in ay of ghosts and then coming back as martha so why not?
Cultural marxist show to brainwash british kids into voting Remain and Labour.
To the other anon's who told yesterday to next expect anything amazing from The Celestial Toymaker, you were absolutely right.
I can't think of any other way to describe the whole stroy than annoying. Joey and Clara the Clowns and Cyril and just every side character were nothing but irritating throughout the entire story. I realize that was point because the Toymaker was designed to be some sort of weird child-entity, but it was incredibly difficult for me stay focused and pay attention. The Dancing Floor was really where I lost interest, with Srgt. Rugg and Mrs. Wigg literally shreiking at the top of thier lungs for no reason for like 10 minutes of the episode. It was just rather poor in a season that's been pretty great so far.
I suppose if there's anything positive to take from it, it's Hayles commenteary on determinism and free will (which I always find interesting).
But yeah besides that it was utter shit.

I'm sure somewhere in his filing cabinet Moffat has stashed the fanfic where Waitress Clala meets up with River and they have a turbulent polyamorous relationship, thus adding a whole new context to their interaction in NotD
