But the biggest problem with book-to-film is the lack of character development. The lack of space and time for digressions to better express the happenings of the present. Pretty much everything you get to better express the visual version of the books. And to top it all off, you're never going to satisfy the hardcore book fans that typically expect an exact copy onto screen (or the little minions that find any meaningless detail to gripe on about the show).

the way the show (and books) is headed, we no longer fear for the survival of major characters. is there anyone who actually thinks that there is even a chance than Jon will die in the battle of the bastards? or Sansa? or Arya anytime this season? throw Tyrion and Daenerys in there also. the major characters have become untouchable. I repeat that I am not saying the authors should kill them for the sake of killing them (and living up to the "everyone dies in Game of Thrones" stereotype just because), I am saying that the series have become objectively more predictable. We know who isn't going to die. To fill the "shock value" void, they have started killing minor characters instead even when it barely makes sense.

Compare the battle of Snow with the battle of the Blackwater. Back in book 2, no one could predict who would win. there were major stakeholders on both sides, and it could have gone either way. when I read it many years ago, it was a coin toss. the arrival of Renly was an actual shock, because not only was it surprising, it also tilted the outcome.
as opposed to the battle of Snow, in which we all know Jon and Sansa are going to come out on top. we are not sure about the details, there will probably be one or even multiple fake outs, but the outcome is unquestionable.
Daenerys is the same. The masters are here, we aren't sure about the details but we are 100% she will win again.
I reiterate, I do NOT mean the series would be better if the masters won or if Ramsay won, just because. I am saying the series would be better if it still had enough character diversity and nebulous morals that we wouldn't be able to predict with 100% certainty who will win based on who are the "main" guys

Yeah, because books 4 and 5 are, to me, still recognized as one book, and they're doing the same thing with a couple more spots of excitement (but maybe because they have length on book two) and shit is really dry at times.
It's being reflected in the episodes.
I've said this to a number of people who have pointed out what you have.
I get the validity in the complaints about the series (not solely the show shitters).
And while I'm not going to say you're wrong, I do like it for the historical scenarios and situations that are sprinkled throughout. And no, I'm not just talking about the War of the Roses as everyone seems to jump to. There's quite a few other isolated incidences that occur that make me smirk and go 'oh damn, that sounds like this and that from the so and so century.' I enjoy the hell out of that, as well as the style of character development as opposed to the development itself. Idk if that makes any sense, but ideally, this whole series is the exact formula I've wanted out of a fantasy series since I was younger and never knew it existed because of laziness. The aired it, I read the books before season 2 came out, and rampaged through the 5 when that finally came out.
