Executive producer Amy Pascal was asked if poking fun at the potential audience of older Ghostbusters fans was a good idea, considering how lucrative the current marketplace is for nostalgia-infused films aimed at the 30-something crowd. "Fuck 'em.", she sternly replied. "Fuck them. We don't want their business. This film isn't for them. Our Ghostbusters aims to be more than a simple cash-grab like so many of our competitors are making these days. Ghostbusters is something special."

People don't realise that it isn't enough for big hollywood blockbusters to make some profit. They have to make a good profit.
If you employ 1000 people to work on a film and it takes 2 years to make, you don't want all that work, all that hassle, plus the risk element to it, in order to make 50m profit on a 300m investment.
Not only that, you only get to release 1-2 blockbusters at most every 6 months, you could have put out a film that made $300m profit on the same investment instead.
