Out of those films, my personal choice is Bronson. Hail Caesar! is very mid-tier Coen Brothers but could appeal to you. And Only God Forgives is a very mixed bag but it depends on your personal taste. Go with Bronson.

A place on /tv/ where we can discuss actual films. Anyway last movie I watched was A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. I enjoyed it and liked how there was a hint of several decades being mashed up into one and was quite surprised it was filmed in California rather than on location in Iran like I thought it would be.

All your points about it were quite right, and I disliked it big time, 2/10. But indeed, she went all out on the idea of overwhelming the audience, and straight from the unreadable credits. Hutton screaming insanely seemed to be on the joke, at least.
But to make such a style color rape while trying to present a serious message, a condemnation of generational vices, was something that fell far from sync.
I'm glad you overrated it and 'forced' my way into watching it. It's important to have a varied diet.

It was okay.
Its clearly made with love, but it's unsure of what its goal is. It tries to be an unconventional biopic, but in the process doesn't achieve much or know exactly what it's doing. It tries to raise questions about artistry and worth, tries to raise questions about relationships and how they influence people, but never really answers them. It doesn't really present a point.
Cheadle is excellent as Davis. He nails everything. McGregor is good as a reporter and nobody was a bad actor by any means. It's such a shame because they're such a good group of people that clearly put love and time into this. It just doesn't work out unfortunately.
It is still enjoyable though as a fan of Miles' music. It's great to see Miles' do these recordings and seeing other figures off Jazz on screen (including my favourite Bill Evans). I really would only recommend it if you're a fan of a Miles' career, because otherwise it doesn't work.

what's your definition of "good" cinematography? in my opinion, the best directors and cinematographers use the visual aspect of their films to emphasize and accentuate the thematic content, which is something that i think Mann does better than almost any of his contemporaries.

In my opinion it's a combination of what you've said, as well as how technically proficient it is. I think Mann does have a goal with what he's shooting, but often it's just done quite poorly on a technical level. Excessive handheld camera, poor frame rates, of course it's all subjective, but that doesn't fit into good cinematography in my opinion.

i think that Mann is totally conscious of how his films diverge from what people would consider classically "good" cinematography. his early work proves that he is capable of shooting something within the bounds of traditional Hollywood visual styles, but ever since ALI he's actively chosen to avoid it. dismissing it as "poor" is unwise, because, in my opinion, the best way to approach a film is to assume that everything you see on screen is exactly what the director wanted you to see. once you figure out what it is they've tried to achieve with the film is when criticism and analysis begins.
