You might be surprised to read some history of battlefield medicine in ancient times. They were well aware of infections (even if they didn't know what germs were), and had many methods of preventing them including honey, sugar, ash, alcohol of course. They even preformed surgeries.
Blade injuries are more painful than a gunshot, especially in the gut, but they're survivable provided no arteries are gushing blood, and the bleeding can be stopped. It's actually pretty impressive how much punishment the human body can heal from.
