So I've finally seen both Civil War and Batman v Superman, and WOW. I simply cannot believe the poor reviews BvS is getting. It's not a great movie but a solid high 7 low 8 movie. It's like they expect it to be the marvel films, bubbily and "lite" and stuff (which isn't bad), whereas BvS and Man of Steel were completely different types of movies, going for different themes/genres.

Man of Steel and BvS, and it seems most of the rest of the DC lineup, are like that newly formed comic imprint getting their run of things for an overarching plot or two, or a new bigwig getting the reins. It happens all the time with comics and it's basically what the industry lives on. That's kinda what happened with the X-Men movies series.

Anyways, my mind was just boggling that people were rating it down so low for what I frankly thought were overly picky or expectation-based quibbles.

Peace.

Your standards are disgustingly low then.

8/10. That's 80%. That's like an -A.

BvS had outright continuity errors and a few instance of a complete absence of much-needed explanation.

No movie with those qualities (unless otherwise PERFECT) could get any higher than a 60%. Even 60% entails a movie better than the average and well worth watching. There are a lot of "classics" that are in that range.

I'd give movies like predator or commando, big fun stupid action flicks, a 7-8/10, but even they were far far better made. A flashy shot isn't necessarily a good one.

DC stands for Damage Control, right?

I think it's kind of like Watchmen, where it suffers for being representative of a medium where completely reading and letting it sink into your mind takes hours, days, even weeks. Honestly Civil War suffered from many of the same problems. It tried to bring real-life consequences into a world where people wear stupid suits and punch other people in stupid suits. This is magnified in MoS and BvS because it's an inherent feature of their worldbuilding, with striking scenes of violence and uncomfortable emotions, whereas Civil War had like 10 movies to establish a world where the heroes always win, no one of any importance really dies and the power of friendship can win the day. When Disney!Marvel tries it, it comes off as hollow and fake.

As for boring, well again it's merely a matter of editing and pacing. Civil War has I'd wager just as many minutes of people sitting around and talking, but the action scenes seem more exciting by comparison because of quickly cut edits, quips, and variety.

Civil War has "fun" in terms of lightweight action with no consequences. In BvS every action has a consequence. Batman shreds people with his Batmobile's machine guns.... It makes the audience uncomfortable compared to his usual restrained violence. It serves a thematic purpose. Tony Stark uses his fight prediction program to beat Capn... it has no consequence except the writers needed it to happen somehow for the "dramatic" ending.

BvS takes its time with its shots, and allows things to sink in. The first funeral scene lingers on every emotional step, from Bruce running away to his fear in the cave and his psychological overcoming of that fear. The first scene in Civil War is the heroes quipping over a poorly-developed villain-shout-out-reference-number-118 and punching him.

You'll remember things like the crypt popping open with the Manbat or Clark ramming Doomsday more than you'll remember the time spiderman like totally owned that guy by tangling up his legs.

>>
>>70075089
So much wrong I don't even know where to start...
>>
I think a lot of it comes from Rotten Tomatoes review system. Critics either recommend it or they don't. Rotten or fresh. You can't really recommend BvS to the average moviegoer, because it's so grim and unnecessarily convoluted. So most of them just didn't recommend it. You can't treat Rotten Tomato scores the same as your usual 1-10 scale.

Saying all that, it really should have gotten the same or higher than Man of Steel (around 50%).

But there's absolutely no consequences in the DCEU.
Metropolis got leveled, and the moment the congress explodes, the consequences of that vanish.
Superman's death is pointless because he's going to resurrect, probably 3 days later, in Justice League, and BvS fails at any emotional moment because it does no effort in making people care about the characters.

>>70075199
Then don't. You're wrong.

If you deem BvS to be a 7-8/10 you need to watch more movies. You're simply being retarded. There's literally no other explanation. The entire point of rating a movie is lost when every rating is so inflated that the majority are positive. Most movies are forgettable. If it isn't forgetable than it can deserve higher than a 6/10.

But I doubt anyone will talk about BvS 5 years from now unless its in regards to failed blockbusters.

>>
>>70075410
I'm using capeshit standards. By capeshit standards bvs is >7 rating easy
>>
>>70072744
They rate it low because on a technical level the movie fails to completely tell a story. Specifically, the movie relies heavily on people knowing all of the comics and heroes before watching the film to understand why certain things happen. A story should not rely on information outside of the movie itself in order to make sense. Even seperate movies in franshises follow individual stories which are branched together in a complete story overall. BvS is seen as poor becauxe it fails to do what Marvel has consistently done -> introduce a hero and tell their story without relying on needing outside info.

This is why the movie is rated poorly among normal people and rated highly by people with knowledge in comics. If DC had slowed down and introduced each individual hero with their own backstory movie before placing all of them into one single film it would have registered better with the general population. Instead, they made a movie which isolated those not familiar with comics (which makes up a majority of the people seeing the film) causing the poor ratings. If DC kept in mind the normies, they would have done better.

You are retarded that's now how it works. Reviewers either give a positive or a negative review. The percentage is an average of the fresh (positive) and the rotten (negative) reviews. Below that is the actual 1-10 scoring system with about a 7 starting the positive/fresh reviews. If nothing is fundamentally wrong with a film it will recieve a 7/10 and end up with a high RTpercentage. BvS had a fundamental flaw of bad pacing making it just below a 7/10 and having a lower RT percentage. FUCKNG educate yourself
>>
It's a shame Nolan got tired of capeshit.
>>
>>70075517
Pure kino.

You see that in reality the "plot hole" as you call it is a mythological reference to Plato's symposium wherein the story of mankind's separation from one another is told. The hole in each person, that which we need to fill with knowledge, love, or possessions, is the product of angered Gods. What is superman if not a type of God? And is the audience not representative of humanity?

Synder thus establishes a sophisticated metacommentary on the plot"holes" created in the modern mythology of superheroics, and which ultimately leaves us wanting more despite it being beyond our grasp.

Most BvS fans are generally fans of auteur cinema. Films that are the pure result of their creators id.

Snyder seeks to merge pop commercialism with arthouse sensibilities, eschewing the general trappings of your usual genre fare. Instead of the milquetoast nothingness of a film like something out of the MCU we get something that really has no parallel. It's the synthesis of comic book philosophy and avant garde cinema that many people just aren't ready for.

People who like the movies are glad to discuss them with other fans and open minded people.

The only bottom of the barrel autist here is the degenerate who spends his time in threads for movies he hates, accomplishing nothing at all other than reinforcing the will of the films fans.

snyder has straight up said he wishes he could release long movies, and that length is not a problem for him personally in regards to movies
but he has to compromise and release smaller cuts
even in regards to watchmen, he said he's seen the airplane cut which is "the movie" but of course loses a lot
he's forced to take some of the flesh from the bone so to say

Yes, and of that list, the ones these two films have the most in common with are the X-films. They deal with some of the real-world impact of superbeings and they're recursive, self-referential, occasionally metatextual, and demand that the audience pay a bit more attention than your standard cape fare.

Nah, I'm the kind of person who wanted The Killing Joke, Prey (the one with Dr. Strange), Year One, or Batman: The Cult to get a big screen release. Not one to hype over the Box Office, otherwise I'd be forced to like Avatar and Jurassic World. BvS is closer to an honest treatment of the medium and the characters, and isn't really suited to a 2-hour action movie expectation.

I liked BvS because even if it was a reflection of schlock like Dark Knight Returns and Birthright, at least it did it right.

Zack Snyder when asked about what standalone Batman movie he would make, "I hate fucking niggers but I love to masterbate to interracial cuckold fetish videos on my smart phone so If I ever made a Batman movie I'd have him get raped up his shit hole by a gang of black niggers in a prison. I'm always amazed by Nolan's masterful use of cinematography as a story-telling device such as with these two images. Take note of CIA in front of the plane. It is a well balanced shot where man and horizon form perfect quadrants on the frame. Together they act as Cartesian axes, intersecting to create an origin around which the rest of the world is ordered. This is clearly an image of a man who thinks he's in control. The following shot supports this by contrast where we see the hired guns in a car blindfolded and disoriented. The camera shakes violently and the horizon is askew. This is a shot of men who are not in control. For the next minute of dialogue CIA maintains his mask of composure as he orders his men and interrogates his captives. It's not until the staged killing when a double-masked Bane questions the reality of what his senses perceive. Bane rejects the world that CIA had built around the captives and this quite literally shakes his foundation. CIA stumbles for the first time in this moment, partly rustled by the turbulence, partly taken a back by Bane's ability to speak, but primarily shaken by the tremors of the crumbling system of order he had built and maintained in the figurative image of the Agency. As CIA and Bane converse face to face it is Bane who remains steady, whereas CIA shakes in frustration as he struggles to restore order with idle threats. It is then that we see the second plane approaching the first, both of which take on an axial form (plane) from the wings and fuselage. The one "plane" flips the other, turning CIA's world upside-down. In the midst of chaos and a broken system Bane establishes himself as a new order, pic related. With his heart at the origin, his body becomes the vertical and horizontal axes, and all space around him is a new Cartesian plane risen from the ashes of CIA's order and metric. As the shell of an old world drops away orientation and verticality is restored.

Yeah? What about the one that got deleted 13 posts in? A lot of us *do* dump that stuff, because we get tired of explaining to yet another person what it is we like about these movies. We dump that because we get tired of continually covering old ground with people so smugly convinced of their superiority that they start asking entry level questions that have been answered countless, countless times without refute.

Don't agree with all the captures? Fine. I don't agree with every single word of it myself, but there's enough common ground to have a discussion. MCU is more popular in the outside world, it's camp and whilst i wouldn't say its a shinning beakon feminist thought there isn't the same insistance on serrious depictions of masculinity, Captin America would be the closest thing to a traditional alpha male figure in the MCU films and even he's quite camp.

As far as anyone knew, the senate called out Superman, then explodes killing everyone two minutes after he walks in.

I've said it before, but I think the "let's find a way to give Lex access to the ship and Zod" scene would have been far better if moved to after the senate bombing, to give an actual legit reason Luthor could use to push his Superman countermeasures.

Right now, we got "random senator is able to give him unsupervised, unlimited access to an alien spacecraft and alien corpse for no reason while asking for nothing in return," when any realistic government would have had that shit locked down and probably moved to a top secret location the second the events of Man of Steel ended.

At best, its mediocre now. maybe the ultimate cut will change that, but Sucker Punch directors cut added fuck all, Watchmen just added more shit that I hated in the first place, and Im not gonna hold my breath for BvS.

I'm not surprised but neither parties launch any real criticism. None of these memes ever make sense. "lel your movie got a shit score." "your movie's plot makes no sense xDDDD". I would laugh if the majority of the shitposts were funny but they're not. The fanbase isn't smart enough to come up with anything worth reading.

Instead what I get are multiple 100+ BvS and Civil War threads filled with senseless butthurt, rehashed arguments, and shitty pastas instead of clever, thought-out, dank memes.

I'm about halfway through the prequel comics. I'm wondering if they provide more insight on who that Senator even was.

Also, I'm really starting to suspect that Lex devised a way to track metahumans. At the very least, the guys in the War Room weren't using radar to track Supes and Doomsday, unless they were taking a little artistic license with what radar's capable of.

When Man of Steel came out the general /tv/ consensus was to shit on it just like everyone else was doing at the time. Why did the Meme Machine deem BvS capekino? I mean it is a ruse, right? It's a worse movie than MoS was.
>>
>>70077624
No one did.
It's DCfags who pushed the capekino meme, and it completely blew up in their faces, so liking BvS and MoS became a meme.
>>
>>70077624
>Why did the Meme Machine deem BvS capekino?

Thing is, literally everyone was expecting BvS to be a hit, even just because it was riding on Superman and Batman's names.

When it flopped, some of us got over it, others continue to mock it, others just....broke.

What you're seeing is the result of a film with such high expectations flop that it literally drove it's fans insane.

>>
>>70077644
Not entirely accurate, at least not for me.

Initially, I was kind of "meh" about MoS. I liked it way better than "Returns," but overall, I liked just enough to not hate it. I mainly hated all of what I thought was pointless symbolism. It was when I saw that same religious imagery in BvS that it made me really question if maybe it was conveying something other than what I originally thought. I went back and watched MoS again, and it turned out that it was.

Ever since then, MoS has become one of my favorite hero films.

In any event, I'm going to finish reading the prequel comics and call it a night. It's been nice talking to you all, fans and haters alike.

The thing about comparing Supes to gods is that it creates the image of a savior, see? But this Superman is not a savior. We seem people worshiping him but from the perspective of the audience, he is not the kind of figure that inspires hope. He's hardly a hero.
Hell, the rescue montage, which I imagine is supposed to reflect Clark feeling bad about having people look up to him, can easily also be interpreted as him finding it a fucking shore to just save people. Like doing this stuff is his duty, not what he wants to do out of his own volition.

Perry White: "Do you know how people would react if they knew someone like this was out there?"

Mrs. Ross(after bus rescue in MoS: "It was an act of God, Jonathan!"

This is how people in Supes's world are reacting to the representative of an alien culture vastly superior to humanity both in terms of technology and evolution - they try to see a god in him.

That's very much its own story, one seldom brought to the big screen and explored in such depth. Why is Superman so polarizing to the people of his Earth? Politics enter into it, sure, and so does xenophobia. But there's religion, too. How do you think the world will react when he comes back?

And that's kind of the point, really - we're not supposed to see him the way they are. It would be even harder for us to keep that distance if we were privy to all the things he's been up to over his brief tenure as Superman. From the newspaper clippings on Wally's(the guard) corkboard and the rescue montage, we get brief glimpses of him essentially just going through the motions as a sort of "super-first-responder." that's heroic in its own right, sure, but it's not quite Superman yet.

There at the end when he chooses to risk his own life before Diana's or Bruce's, it's in that moment that he truly embraces his role and his place in the world. When he's back(and free) I think he'll recognizably be the guy people have been clamoring for.

Also, I think there may have been even another ulterior motive to Lex bombing the hearing. Yes, it got rid of Wally, Finch, Mercy, Senator Jolly Rancher, and placed Supes in the middle of another controversy, but it was also the first time Clark was voluntarily facing up to the consequences of his actions, not just in Nairomi, but perhaps reaching all the way back to the Battle of Metropolis. That occurs after the rescue montage, and I think he was going to try out his "public persona" for the first time. That's something Lex had a real stake in not letting happen, because he needed to keep Superman as big an unknown as he could if he was going to successfully paint him as an "alien menace" for his Justice Leagueâ„¢ to face.

When Bruce forwards the files to Diana, notice which two aren't present? I can understand Bruce removing his own, but what about Clarks? Or is it maybe that they were never included in Lex's "metahuman initiative?"
