Why does /tv/ waste their money on these when they are free to download online?

Official Blurays don't even contain lossless data. They are literally h264 compressed video burned to disc. It's no different than when certain people burn discs and try to sell you them on the street.

They are a lossy format. As lossy as an mp3 download.

Why do you pay for these when you aren't even getting a truly lossless disc?
>>
>>69944744
>Why does /tv/ waste their money on these when they are free to download online?
Because that's illegal, you moron. I own about 150 Blu-rays, and I'm always buying more. It's a wonderful feeling getting a new Criterion Blu-ray and knowing I'm supporting future releases from that company. I love buying great movies.

DCI is also a lossy format (MJPEG). Why do people pay to go see movies if they aren't uncompressed like film?
>>
>>69945636
Not to mention the excellent booklets that come with Criterions.
>>
>>69944744

As a general rule it is much easier for a lot of people to simply buy shit instead of stealing it. There's a tipping point where spending money on a movie is simply easier, less risk free etc than pirating.

Some people like collecting shit, displaying at it and simply looking at their shit, however worthless that shit objectively is.

As for he quality issue the amount of people that will notice is approaching zero, so if they fall into the above categories it's not an issue.

Pirate and Buy, Pirate and Buy. Pirate a movie or TV show, and if you like it...Buy it to support it.

for years I have used piracy as a means of rental and it works well for me since Blockbuster, Hollywood video, and Family Video all bit the dust. Download and send to my PLEX server, and watch on my TV through a PLEX enabled roku 3.

You don't get what I'm saying.
If it's merely your method of exposing yourself to movies that you want to see, then by all means go for it.

But calling it a ""collection"" implies belief that the damn plastic discs carry some value, almost as a historical source.

When they don't. All you're doing is producing demand for shit that will pollute the environment when it becomes obsolete in a decade or two.
We have literally gained nothing by getting video rental stores out of business. Video renting should be brought back (at reasonable, competitive prices), and the Netflix/hulu/amazon streaming circlejerk should literally be banned. First they overtook the video rental store market, and now they're ruining that market by offering gradually less, and shittier, content -- turning people to buying discs instead.

>>
>>69949053
Only retards don't pirate everything.
>>
Seeing the difference now isn't the reason to burn to HD-DVD. HD-DVDs uses lossless compression, while Bluray is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the Bluray sits on your harddrive, it will lose roughly 12p, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15p on IDE, but only 7p on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on other optical media.

I started collecting Blurays in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the films I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 1080p, they just look like crap. The sharpness is terrible, the gamma...well don't get me started. Some of those films have degraded down to 32 or even 16p. HD-DVD rips from the same period still look great, even if they weren't stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to HD-DVD, you may not be able to see the difference now, but in a year or two, you'll be glad you did.
>>

>At least try to make your b8 believable. I'm a vinylfag myself but I'll be the first to admit that vinyl degrades faster than optical media.

This thread is pure cancer and literally everyone is wrong as usual.

I cannot for the life of me watch a pirated movie any longer. I can pick out the artifacts and compression so quickly it's painful. The worst DVD looks 1000x better than 99% of rips online.

On top of that, there are so few true BR rips out there, and even when there are, it usually has one fucking seeder in Dubai.

I put that shit in the trash a long time ago. There are far better ways to watch movies and keep a beautiful uncompressed BR digital collection than pirating or abusing/wasting money redbox.

>>
>>69949657
I used to be this way, but I cannot get in to a private tracker for my life.

Fucking ratio niggers and having to maintain some shit - how the fuck am I to maintain a fucking ratio when EVERY NIGGER ON A PRIVATE SERVER HAS A SEEDBOX (yet again, "paying to pirate") AND OUTSEEDS MY CONNECTION SO I CAN NEVER MAINTAIN SAID RATIO.

SEEDBOXES ARE CANCER.
PRIVATE TRACKERS ARE FOR PEOPLE LITERALLY PAYING FOR SEEDBOXES THAT ARE HUGE FUCKBOIS
>>
>>69949482

Yeah for a direct 1080p stream you'll need to upgrade to a 5ghz router. If you can't afford a 5ghz router, convince mom and dad to get T-Mobile instead of [insert large cellphone carrier] and they will send you one for free upon request.
>>
>>69949783
Not talking about private trackers at all son, I couldn't get into any of that shit to save my life either...

My "secret weapon" is completely free and much faster than any fucking private/public server on the planet. In fact, I can get just about any film (new releases included) I want shipped to a 2 minute walk from me in about a day.
>>
>>69949783
I literally have 12 private tracker accounts and no seedbox.
>>
>>69944744
Hi FBI!
>>
>>69945159

Wow! I thought I was the only only one who realized this. Nothing against Criterion, but Arrow has been killing it.

I also like Scream Factory and Blue Underground, as a genre fan.

>In fact, I can get just about any film (new releases included) I want shipped to a 2 minute walk from me in about a day.

Your mom?
>>
>>69950156
you mean on the same site? if you can't maintain your ratio, maybe try getting a seedbox
>>
>>69949657
>I cannot for the life of me watch a pirated movie any longer. I can pick out the artifacts and compression so quickly it's painful. The worst DVD looks 1000x better than 99% of rips online.

Then just download the full disc or remux.

Literally the same picture quality as the bluray.

Whose dick do you suck to get that? can I suck it too? I want a Chef blu ray for free

I have memberships at 12 different sites. No seedbox. Ratio is easy to maintain.

Don't mind the haters; shoulda known this group would bitch. Thanks for posting the pics.

I like your collection. Too much Criterion for my taste, but you'd say there is too much Fulci and Argento in mine...

>>
>>69950197

Mom hates films. It sucks. When I go home to visit she only wants to watch antiques roadshow. Would love to watch more films with the senpai.

>>69950238
True most of the time (sometimes you get cunts who don't know how to rip a fucking disk). However, like I said, that takes fucking MONTHS for some uncommon films that I want to watch.

>>69950242
No one's, even though I wish I were gay. Life would be so much easier. Women are goddamn insane. I digress. The secret is patently obvious and one of the most underrated tools on the fucking planet. It's called a library card. If you're in college, live remotely near the city, or have a local library on a large statewide network (should cover 90%+ of the idiots here), you can get an absurd number of films, all on blu-ray. Zero cost, faster than most seeders on the other side of the planet, and usually cover a wonderful dearth of fantastic rare films (like entire sets of the criterion collection).
>>
>>69950510
>that takes fucking MONTHS for some uncommon films that I want to watch.

Takes minutes for me. Name a movie you think is too hard to download.
>>
>>69949378
It's literally made of plastic. Temperature, moisture, and other factors can degrade vinyl and you don't even have to play it. Fuck, stacking vinyl on top of each other laterally can wreck them.
>>
>>69950591
I should've clarified. Movies/shows that are in uncompressed quality. You can find damn near anything in a compressed format. I have honestly no interest in it any longer. It's painful to watch.
>>
>>69950674
Ask me for a movie in uncompressed quality then.
>>
>>69950663
*longitudinally
>>
>>69950742
I honestly haven't searched in a long time (at least 2 or 3 years), but recall I had a hell of a time finding uncompressed rips of One Outs, Baraka, and Glengarry Glen Ross when I used to hunt out downloads.

And even more disappointed that when you do find one they seem to be shitty/compressed/not matching other quality rips people are getting on a BR disc.
>>
>>69950663
preserved vinyl records can last decades. hard drives fail too.
>>
>>69950914
Yeah, because they're moving parts. SSD's get worn out as well. Literally everything degrades no matter what. He's (assuming you're not the same person) asserting that vinyl doesn't degrade if you don't do anything with it no matter what. It is a very delicate object made out of polyvinyl chloride. They used to be made out of Shellac, which was even more delicate. Shit broke if you looked at it funny. It's just a dumb fucking meme that neo-hipsters perpetuate claiming that modern day records aren't shit.
>>
>>69951038
Ya that's way better than when I was searching years ago. Honestly shocked to see 8 seeders on the ~44 gb uncompressed.

Still, it's still probably faster to just literally put in a request at the library for me, than to wait for 44gb to trickle down.

But point taken, color me impressed.
>>
>>69951038

>lossless as mp3

mp3 bitrate is low compared to bluray bitrate

plus you need special hardware to play a bluray whereas you can use a 10 year old ipod shuffle to play any mp3

hardware + high bitrate > low bitrate *.mkv

>>69945832
This. Means you don't have a bunch of shit movies physically, only the good ones get saved.

Some of those are running high speed servers so the speed would be your line speed.

Ouch! My wallet hurts just looking at that.

I don't care about owning them, I just want to pay money for movies I pirated and liked.

But the best copy I can get is the bluray disc since I can't do anything with mt2s films but encode them?

But it's comfy to have a collection of films that would otherwise be difficult to watch sitting on your bookshelf anon. Surely you must do that with every type of media right? I mean you'd sound like a pretty big hypocrite if it turned out you bought games or albums you like.
>>
Netflix/HBO for convenience, torrents for obscurekino and current shows. Blu-ray never ever.
>>
>>69958253
>torrents for obscurekino

Actual hard to find films are rarely available in torrent form. There's certain films you literally couldn't see without renting/buying it on DVD/Blu Ray.
>>
I can't wait to buy a new slim-trak LMT-TV for the new 4:40 format. It's an insanely huge (but slim) rectangle that allows you to see the fucking shit out of the the periphery...all you have to do is squint and find the center. BUT IT'S NEWWWWW thank god

Only 1/3 of users on private trackers have seedboxes, and that changes depending on the tracker, but not by much.

>>69970014
A semi viable alternative is A-HD (awesome HD) which is easy to get in.
Just get into what.cd or animebyt.es and make PU and you're in. You need a 3 months old account though but if you have a 6 month old account you can join PassThePopcorn.me as well on both sites. You need to be elite on what.cd however but still only power user on animebyt.es
HDB is home to THE best encoders on the entire net and they've recently stopped allowing their encodes to be leaked so if you want true , true HD film you'll have to become a member.
No one really knows where they recruit anymore though , some say biblotik and some say pass the popcorn but I have no idea.
A friend invited me to HDB personally.
It's been the hardest tracker to get into other than BTN for years now
