The director seems to be more on the level with the visual aspect of Trek with the colors and the alien designs than JJ's off brand Star Wars knockoff Trek ever was. Plus it looks to be a TOS wild west space sci-fi story instead of the JJ history mining.

Balance of Terror is by far the best Trek episode imo. There's a reason it Romulans managed to be loved for decades despite almost every other episode featuring them sucking hard amounts of ass and why it was emulated in Wrath of Khan. The Voyage Home is a pretty good timetravel romp and has a lot of wide appeal. The Undiscovered Country is a half-baked political thriller that is mostly held up by some mild action and good effects. And Star Trek 09 is a very fun star trek popcorn flick.

I know plenty of people who have never watched an episode of Star Trek in their fucking lives who like the Abrams films.
