Animations are bad, but holding the blade and bashing with the pommel is an accurate historical technique. The crossguard can be used as a sort of hook to bind and pull the opponent, or even as a pick. Bashing with the pommel was legitimate because it was heavier than the blade and you aren't going to cut through a steel helmet anyway. With the pommel you can at least ring their bell more effectively.

Well Jaime was meant to end up as king for a while in GRRM's original manuscript for asoiaf when it was a trilogy so there might be some wisdom to this. Well, maybe not Aegon. But Stannis was definitely geared towards being 'the king in Westeros to root for' after the Red Wedding by the narrative. There's a reason he's called 'the king who cared' in the books after all. But yeah, Stannis is an outer layer protagonist, not an endgame one like Samwell or Sansa or a subverted one like Dany and Jon. Tyrion and Dany are main characters but they won't be heroes. Tyrion will very likely end up being a tyrant, accepting being the monster society painted him as, and Dany will be the GRRM's style of Sauron.

no, Clarke is a genuinely bad actor. the only "acting" she can do is to vacillate between flat lifelessness and furious yelling, which is why her only good material is S1 and the Dracarys scene in S3. aside from those two modes, she can do completely non-performer friendliness/affection when she occasionally has to braid Missandei's hair or pillow talk her lovers in scenes that might as well be in a modern-day romcom (although she's shit in those as well, check out the trailer for her latest movie). she both can't emote and overemotes, she's physically stiff, and if she's hampered by her material the same is certainly true of the reverse, not once has she elevated the character with her own touch.
Turner occasionally overacts, especially with her mouth (her scene with Littlefinger when she finds out she's marrying Ramsay stands out), but overall she's natural in the role and enlivens the character.
