Animations are bad, but holding the blade and bashing with the pommel is an accurate historical technique. The crossguard can be used as a sort of hook to bind and pull the opponent, or even as a pick. Bashing with the pommel was legitimate because it was heavier than the blade and you aren't going to cut through a steel helmet anyway. and I don't actually like her. The point is that the story doesn't add up and we know Robbert's character flaws. I bet there's a lot more yet to be revealed... just like how the Lannisters seemed to be usurpers but they may actually have more claim to the throne than the Baratheons in the end, given some things mentioned or hinted in the books. GRRM likes to draw clear lines of hero and villain and then invert them by the end of their arc, from the look of things thus far.
