Maybe they rule together or whatever, or join forces and beat back the others as a whole united front, but that means the house conflicts have to be resolved. I think it would be Dany/Euron and Jon vs Others, meaning Bolton/Karstark/Cleganebowl/Sparrows vs Lannisters will all have to be done and dusted. Dunno where Arya/Sansa would fit in. I really don't know, all I'm leaning towards is the logical 'westeros has to be united to face the Wight army/others/giant spiders etc' thing. There's no way they wouldn't tie up the majority of plotlines before focusing on the big war.

Sure, I know it's a fantasy series. R'hllor cued me in, but I'm saying it should've gone a different route and focused on the politics and the battles between families. Hell, that's what the tag line is about. If not, they should've gone for a more neutral route in the description and name of the show. They could've gone Winds of Winter or something like that.
Also Stannis' story was never about uniting anyone, he still considered Tommen and the Lannisters as his enemies and aimed to get rid of them. He never made an effort to 'unite' he just saw the tactical advantage of having the North instead of the Stormlands because the Stormlands are encircled from all sides.

Well I've not read the books, obviously, but from the show I figured Stannis and Jon would team up to fight The Others, after Stannis fucked up the Boltons and did some scheming against the Lannisters, sort of giving them taste of their own medicine. Stannis would kill Jamie in a duel, blah blah fast forward to the battle at the wall, they start to lose then Dany and her army turns up with dragons and smokes the others .... But ....
