Doctor Who and the Pescatons edition

What does /who/ think of the first ever Doctor Who audio?

Last thread >>69027441
>>
>>69060291
Series 9 did nothing wrong.
>>
>>69059982
You're crazy if you think Deep Breath and Sherwood were better than the Davros episodes.
>>
>>69060574
There's nothing wrong with Deep Breath.
>>
New thread to kill subject as usual
>>
>>69060667
It was good. But better than the Davros episodes?
>>
Series 8, 1-9 is the best modern run of stories with a proper, takes-no-shit Doctor.
>>
>>69060291
>implying anyone has listened to this shit

Ian Levine wrote Day of the Doctor. Did you know that?

The Davros ep was awful.

Yeah bro
>>
>>69060739
You should, it's not that bad and it's an important part of the show's history.
>>
>>69060788
I'm glad you agree.
>>
>>69060756
Why? The conversations between 12 and Davros were great and something that was really lacking in his last appearance. The Master fucking with Clara was also a lot of fun.
>>
>>69060698
>>69060574
The Davros episodes were a narrative mess. The misused Missy, wasted the Daleks, and frankly wasted our time. Unless you like the Doctor ripping Davros out of his chair or playing guitar from an anachronistic armoured assault vehicle. The things swung big and missed even bigger.

Deep Breath and Sherwood told their stories, had some neat and/or cringey moments, and got on with it.
>>
Series 8 is GOAT. Kill the Moon, ItFotN and Death in Heaven are the only episodes under 8/10.
>>
>>69060733
>a proper, takes-no-shit Doctor.
Reminder that this mindset where the platonic ideal of the Doctor is a curmudgeonly, callous, dry wanker is completely counter to all 12 versions of the Doctor. It works for Capaldi because it is tempered by joy and passion. The fans who lament this fact and want the Doctor to just be 'cunty smart bloke' need to fark off to some other show.
>>
The Davros story was shit. Mainly because there wasn't really a story.

It was almost as if Moffat just decided to bring Davros back for the sake of it. Utter shite.

Gareth Robert's should've been asked to write it as he evidently knows more about classic Doctor Who than Moffat.
>>
>>69060826
In your opinion.
I think they are awful rubbish and blatant emotional manipulation.
Davros dying could be a great moment but it was obviously a trick.
Then they were "both lying" so it was all fake anyway.
And, no, I don't accept anything the mass murdering psychopath said was "genuinely heartfelt" at any stage.
>>
>>69060917

>>
>>69060829
>The misused Missy
That was best use of the Master in ages. We actually got to see her act villainous and there wasn't some retarded scheme as usual.

It was a Davros story.

Two questions.

1. Why is it shallow to watch a show for the leading actor's looks rather than the plot?

2. Why should people be expected to think about a TV show's plots in order to make sense of them?

"...The meteorite is really a wrecked spaceship buried under the [Thames] estuary. The Doctor believes it is a Pescaton ship. The Pescatons are carcharhinidae, or deep water sharks. The experts scoff at this, until one comes out of the Thames and makes its way to London Zoo in search of salt water. The Doctor confronts it in the Aquarium, where it dies and disintegrates. That night, more meteorites land in the Thames..."

I still think it's b8 but i'll answer you.

>1. Why is it shallow to watch a show for the leading actor's looks rather than the plot?

How is that not shallow? I mean if you enjoy X as an actor and enjoy seeing them in different roles that's one thing. I know a few people who were Capaldi fans and only really watched DW because of him. But if you're only watching because you find them attractive that's pretty ridiculous.

>2. Why should people be expected to think about a TV show's plots in order to make sense of them?

What's wrong with the show requiring you to actually pay attention?

You can watch something to masturbate to if you wish.

It does not make you a fan of that show and certainly doesn't make any opinions on that show worth hearing.

You have even said the content of that show is not important.

So, masturbate all you like. That's fine. You are not a fan of whatever show it is, though.

But what if the only quality you're interested in is aesthetics?

Agreed, but it requires the right amount of thought. Not too little, or too much. I think people who drop overcomplicated television are applying the right amount of thought. It isn't opera or a modernist novel - television is entertainment. Art, maybe, but always an art of entertainment.
>>

>television is entertainment. Art, maybe, but always an art of entertainment.
What are news broadcasts, then?
>>
>>69062478
But people don't give the show a chance to be interesting. They shitpost in live threads or leave the show in the backround while doing something else instead of actually watching and then complaining about how the episode didn't make any sense but if they'd had actually watched it they'd probably understood what happened. If you actually watched the episode and didn't like it, that's fair. But if you barely pay attention to it your opinion are irrelevant.
>>
>>69062776

I'm talking about the 'shallow young girls' who it's been suggested were watching it for Tennant's and Smith's looks. I doubt they were masturbating to it, assuming they were watching it with their family or friends.

Where did I say that the content isn't important?

No, of course they're not fans. That's my point.

>>
>>69062931

It's not me who decides it, its the millions, of whom I'm one, whose indifference gets things cancelled. A mainstream channel like BBC1 has a lower limit in terms of acceptable viewing figures many times larger than the capacity of the largest arts venue.
>>
>>69063014
I'm afraid I predicted your shifting goal post, friend.
>>
>>69063014
>you know what I meant
Yeah, you mean to be one of the mindless millions forcing TV to become dumber and duller, instead of striving for something greater, simply because it makes more money and fits your already dismall view of humanity.

That's you.
>>
>>69062984

So those 'shallow young girls' aren't shallow, but pretentious? Or are they both? How?
>>
>>69063065

Thinking the criterion of humanity's value is how hard they concentrate on an entertainment programme is an incredibly dismal view of humanity.

Why isn't lust on the spectrum of legitimate 'appreciation of beauty'? Eroticism has been an acceptable element in work and audience response for years in high culture.

>Why isn't lust on the spectrum of legitimate 'appreciation of beauty'? Eroticism has been an acceptable element in work and audience response for years in high culture.
Who says it's not? It's just tiptoed around and justified with flowery words id est eroticism. Lust isn't always bound to the aesthetic either. I've had the notion to fuck girls i've not really been physically attracted to. There's power dynamics among other things in play. Lust is next to fear as being one of the more basic and entrenched instincts and just as hard to wrap your head around.

Fine, but I'm really more interested in why people think that the girls who watched for their leads' looks, and casual viewers, were somehow watching the show wrongly - remember, it exists for them, not fans - than the question of the point at which making the show becomes unsustainable. So far, nobody has put forward a real reason for this disdain.

The argument has yet to be made for why watching for looks is shallow when you're not pretending that's a metric of any other virtue, which seems to be the usual reason people call reactions to beauty 'shallow'. My cousin works for the BBC. Will ask him if there are official stats available online. Doctor Who is actually one of the top streamed shows in numerous countries.

There was a huge bidding war between various streaming companies, which Amazon won.

Plus, the BBC is struggling a bit financially because of political shenanigans, but that's another debate that can be discussed on /pol/.

I think you're putting too much stock into what other people think young girls think. It's a bonus if they tune in sure, but it's not the target audience, just a small segment therof. They aren't the ones paying the tv liscences, they're probably not even the ones buying the merchandise. If these hypothetical girls are hypothetically being called shallow for not being able to look past the looks of the actors playing the parts, then I'm sorry I'd and nearly anyone else would agree a hypothetical spade, should be still referred to as a spade.
They don't have to defend themselves of course but if they can't verbalise and validate their own opinion why should I accept or entertain it?

Another aspect of this is that Capaldi is in some people's opinion a worse actor than Matt Smith. He looks like he wouldn't be - he's older, and we equate age with chops. But maybe that's a shallow equation?

Capaldi's a good Doctor but he's not an amazing actor. The scene where Clara 'dies' in TMA was phucking embarassing.

This isn't about what they think, this is about why fans think they have a right to an opinion on normal people's normal reasons for watching. There's a middlebrow assumption that erotics are less important than the things which are alleged to give 'gravity', and what I'm driving at is that this doesn't resemble how people involved in high culture (in the way fans delude themselves they are) actually think. So the fans are neither populists, nor connoisseurs. What are they good for? Absolutely nothing.

Vicki and Jo skip arm in arm down the streets of Skaro looking at shopwindow dummies while fireworks mixed up by Liz Shaw and Ian Chesterton explode across the sky where Steven Taylor draws a Blue Peter Badge in contrails from the Planet Mondas. Jon Pertwee captains the HMS Bessie with Ben Jackson and reminisce about Polly, who right this moment is slipping through the UNIT tearoom planting retcon as part of her new gig with Torchwood. >1. Why is it shallow to watch a show for the leading actor's looks rather than the plot?
That's not true though.

I LOVED to watch Matt Smith, and got me retardedly excited to watch every new episode.
The plots were still good, but Matt Smith added more hype to every episode, rather than to look at a very unattractive very old man.

Matt Smith also had an amazing energy, which all other of the new doctors had, but Capaldi completely lacks, it just sounds bad whenever he talks and tries to be "energetic" when he comes up with a new scheme.

Also, it's creepy, to have a pretty and young Clara, with a man 50 years older than her.

If all you care about is how attractive somebody is, then you should be watching where you're more likely to see attractive people. Though, I guess porn doesn't have that many attractive men, or at least you don't really see them.

>>69065323
This doesn't read like a confirmation of anything, but if real, it might be the first promising news about the Chibnall era.

The 'showrunner' model only ever worked for NuWho because at the top, you had an absolute machine of a writer pumping out scripts and rewrites at a high rate and somehow not producing 100% trainwrecks. Like or dislike RTD/Moffat, that is what they did (along with the aid of at least one co-executive producer to help run things). I don't trust Chibnall to deliver at the same capacity. In a show like Doctor Who where every 45-minute episode has to be its own story and totally different, working at that rate in the first place is ever so slightly superhuman.
Losing Moffat without a replacement on his level of output should ABSOLUTELY require a rethink of how the writing on the show works. I've thought this for ages.

Of course I don't want to lose the unique flair of individual writers' contributions, and the wildly varied feel it gives to the series. But in past series, the head writer has had to handle at least 5 of the episode slots per year. Do you trust Chibbers with that? Imagine if that weight could be distributed, while leaving the other slots for individual writers as before?
>>
>>69066041

When did you think I left? I probably left and came back.
>>
>>69066199
To be honest, I don't have much faith in arcs. If they manage to make character development work, that'd be great. But plot/mystery arcs never quite worked because of how spread out Doctor Who plots and settings are. There's not much that can get into all the parts.
>>

Who said the people who watched Smith and Tennant for their looks only care about how attractive somebody is? Maybe they care about plot in other things but watched Who for the sexy Doctors. My point is, I don't hear any real argument for why that sort of response should be called 'shallow', other than habit.

No, big budget television is a very likely place to see attractive people.

I'm sorry but you are talking out of your ass.
any picture could have contrast altered just for a start

that is a shitty 4chan meme

If you only watch something because of how attractive somebody is, you're shallow, because you simply only care about what's on the surface.
It's like, in the definition of the word.

You know as well as I do that these discussions are going more and more interestingly, and having to ignore your trolling is a small price to pay for that. A trip closes down thought because so many people hate trips anyway.

you know where else is a very likely place to see attractive people

bars - particularly nightclubs

maybe you should try one of those - stop repressing your inner self and get out of the closet

I know you're trying to tell us something anon

It just seems to be in the air, with Missy, the gender change regeneration in Hell Bent, all the talk in the media about how women should go for traditionally male roles.

The roof was literally the same color paint as all of the walls and the console (and the arching pillars splittling it up), which all appear significantly darker. You can also see the console itself illuminated around its edges, from the bright ambient light. That cannot be achieved with a photohsop filter, especially not on an image as grainy as this >>69065743
The roof has been modified in some way. Whether it's white or chroma green is difficult to tell because of the black and white, but it is definitely brighter

Where did this picture come from?
>>

The image of the surface is all that's actually there. How do you evaluate an actor? Look at what he does with his face, listen to what he does with his voice. There's no rigor to the idea of casting one set of responses as shallow.
>>

found it off Facebook
>>
>>69066821

what relation did the person who posted it have to the show?
>>
>>69066820
>How do you evaluate an actor?
But watching his performance. Not judging if hes attractive or not.

Are you ready for me to blow your mind? Because I was actually one of the people who was having a calm, civil discussion with you yesterday, but it doesn't change the fact that you still act like a cunt and now I'm afraid that yesterday is going to encourage you to keep coming back more often and frankly that can only be a bad thing. So I and others would like a way to filter you.

>A trip closes down thought because so many people hate trips anyway.
That's not true, there are and have always been accepted trips on /who/. Nobody complains about Cloister or Schlemihl. You could still have converstaions with people who want to talk to you while allowing those who don't to filter you. That mean you are imposing your presence upon people who don't want it unnecessarily and that makes you an obnoxious person. Not that that's an unusual thing on 4chan, but what makes you especially insufferable is that you always believe you have the high ground. You are worse than the people who troll you because at least they know they're shitposting.

I hope this happens. Not just because anything that gives Chibnall a less absolute control over the show than RTD/Moffat had, but also because, if DW is to have season-long arcs, it's much better to have a writer's room to plan everything in detail and know how their episodes fit in the season and what the general tone is supposed to be, rather than to have freelance writers write single episodes and a showrunner in charge of tying everything together.
