Why colors in 90's movies are more pleasant and vibrant than present movies?
>>
>>68939240
there was a lot of acid going around
>>
Fashion tendencies were different. Also directors didn't completely fuck up the movies by adding unnecessary filters
>>
>>68939240

replaced by cgi ?
>>
It's mostly the film stock made in that time, but it also matched the optimism of the decade. 70s were gritty and unclear, post 9/11 things got darker and more dreary.
>>
>>68939240
no disgusting orange and teal color grading
>>
9/11
>>
>>68939240
Film vs digital, more post production and cgi.
>>
I believe Snyder lead this new trend of MUH GRITTY SATURATION with 300
Even Matrix trilogy isn't that bad, but it became the norm somehow.
I'm positive it hides imperfections specially with lighting, and directors are lazy fucks that just go with the flavornof the month style that had made money, só why bother with something different?

Swordfish and that blue filtered mel gibson movie comes to mind also

Jurassic Park in theaters was supposed to look more like it's 3D remaster rather than how you remember it.

On the flipside though you've also got your Michael Bay types cranking the saturation up to ludicrous degrees.
>>
Because digital footage can be a nightmare to colour and light correct. Easier to slap a filter that hides all the mistakes made during filming.
>>
>>68939240
>depending on screenshots from digital, color corrected home media
Pro-tip: that's not how it looked in the theaters in 1993
>>
>>68939711
No, there was definitely a trend in the 90s for rich color palettes. I see it all the time, even if "pleb" movies like Rush Hour

For films made in the 90s, rarely before or after. Why are you insisting it's some alteration?

WAIT A GODDAMN MINUTE

Weren't they Jeeps in the original? That front end looks like a blazer or maybe a bronco

What the fuck is going on? I DEMAND ANSWERS! SOMETHING IS AMISS AND NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED!
>>

What are you using for reference? Faded prints you half remember seeing 20 years ago?
>>
>>68940030
All I'm saying is that it's stupid to use color corrected home media as evidence that that's how the picture looked originally.

That's how they always looked like, what did you think? That you're remembering something from a prior existence before the universe changed? Don't be silly. everything is fine.

>>68940054
why do you assume home media is necessarily different than theater, especially in 93?

They were 1994 ford explorers evidently

Park staff used red/grey jeeps, but the cars on the tour were those two greenish electric Ford explorers.

Those are the tour cars and they're 1993 Ford Explorers. The Jeeps you're thinking of are 1993 Jeep Wranglers.

Do you not see the irony here?

>>68940054
I trust Universal to get the picture right on a film as significant as JP, especially when the director and cinematographer are still alive to work with them. You also can't pull something out of nothing like that, the colors have to be bold enough to begin with to enhance to the way the OP looks.

inb4 someone post the handful of bad blu-ray transfers as evidence against this
>>
>>68940014

The tour vehicles were Ford Explorers.

The staff used Jeeps though.

Spielberg supervised the new color correction. It was supposed to look like that trailer. The following is from fxguide.

Stereo D President William Sherak about the film's 2D to 3D conversion:

> We took the original 1993 35mm O-neg, did a 4K scan of the picture. We did a full restoration on the image, and a full color-correction. Steven really wanted to match the original look - the color is very similar to the original. Which means you watch it and you have this brand new experience but you don't feel like you're watching a different movie. It's the same cut you saw in 1993 but we just dimensionalized it.
>>
>>68939660
And it still lacked colors.
No racial pun intended.

I saw JP 3D in the theater. They did an amazing job. The rain effects made some of the most immersive shots I've ever seen. Also Laura Dern's Shorts of Infinte Boners.

technically sepia/colored desaturation was popularised by Gordon Willis DPing on The Godfather.

After that movies started to copy that look to make their own films look like prestige products. That just evolved into grimdark grey modern cinema.

Thanks for ruining everything, Gordon.
>>
>>68939375
>I'm positive it hides imperfections specially with lighting
This is very true in David Fincher's case. He has said in many cases that the heavy use of filters and the "gritty" look was done to hide the lighting imperfections in his movies. It's one of the reasons why Fincher hates film, and swears by digital. Strange thing is his flicks still look as shit as they did when he was shooting on film.

>>
>>68944381
Agree, if it was actually the same they wouldn't feel the need to feed us this spiel, they would just release the thing and let it stand on its own,
