No. Heaven Sent shows Capaldi going through the whole thing once, and then once you've got the gist of it it fast-forwards through the rest of the process.
Punchlineshows the McCoy in the same scene a few different times, with more and more variations each time as he gradually becomes aware that he is in a fiction and refuses to play his scripted role in events, until finally he breaks through to reality..
It's similar, but ultimately differentand better. And it would be an occasion to have some GOAT baneposting.

I don't think it's the time war concept that is the big limitation, rather I think it's the character of the Doctor himself. The War Doctor started out as the kind of character who didn't want to fight in the war but had to, and he ended as the character who didn't want the war to continue so he chose to end it. Maybe I'm just not good enough of a writer but I don't think there are that many arcs of character development you can shove between these two point, the biggest part has already been covered in Engines of War. I have the feeling that the War Doctor will just stay this static Captain Grumpy figure forever, simply with different, interchangeable filler adventures in-between.

yeah I think these all work well. they aren't totally jarring compared to the rest of the episode like the ones in crimson horror and closing time. they're all also connected to events actually in the episode which the one in closing time isn't which makes it more obviously added in.

The only way to do character development with War would be to depict him at a young stage and suggest he was more of a 'warrior' and less reluctant shortly after regenerating, which would then allow you to tell the story of how he got worn down into cuddly old man form, rather than just staying the same all the way through. Literally the only Bill scene we have watched is a hastily written audition sketch with a couple of edits made. Sadly still happening even in his last appearance. I just got the blu ray of Series 9 and with the subs on for Last Christmas I noticed some of the dream Danny's lines are pretty funny but his delivery's so stilted it kills em. He sounds as if he's cold reading them off cue cards.

But you read a Russell [T Davies] script and suddenly everything makes sense in an immaculate clean way. So they’re huge influences and pick-me-ups. I read Cucumber years ago for the simple reason that I was stuck on Doctor Who, really tired and having a miserable time rewriting someone’s script. And all I was doing covertly was saying, “Could you send me some good writing I haven’t read so I can remember what it’s like?” It doesn’t mean you then write like that but you go, “Yes! That’s exciting.”

Moffat shat all over that story. Gareth had huge plans for a grand cyberman story with deep political undertones. But Moffat forced rewrites.
Gareth is an amazing writer. He's so observational, and his acerbic wit is just as fluid as his writing style. He will go down as one of the unsung heroes of Doctor Who. VERY underrated scriptwriter.
