Terror of the Zygons edition.
Is this story as GOAT as its reputation suggests?
Also reminder that Banks Stewart died just a few months ago.

Terror of the Zygonspigshit
>>68761975
I imagine Hartnell was probably a bit bigoted, but in the way you'd expect of a man of his class and generation, not having a weird aversion to ever acting alongside black people. I think AW has 'built her part' rather. This was previously claimed as the reason he didn't appear in scenes with Jewish, gay Max Adrian in The Myth Makers, but 1. Sidney Newman, Verity Lambert and William Russell were/are all Jewish, and 2. he wouldn't have lasted five minutes in showbusiness if he could really never stand working with gay people.
What do you think terry nation's kids would actually do if the BBC decided not to use the daleks one year? Would they throw a shitfit and do nothing only to realise nobody cares about the daleks as a standalone IP outside of doctor who, or will they make a shitty dalek movie like they're doing with K9 and Omega only to realise that nobody cares about the daleks as a standalone IP outside of doctor who?
>>68762137
Calling someone bigoted is inherently bigoted because you are considering your moral opinions to be superior to those of another person
don't be a hypocrite
>>68762243
No, this sort of relativism won't do.
Its pretty good. Even the Zygon look pretty decent. The new ones are better though.
>>68762204
Couldn't they sue BBC for being in breach of contract? Or is it probably something like if they don't use them they lose the license?

Doctor Who is a shit show and I say this as a true fan.

>>68762627
Stop accepting bad storytelling.
>>68762800
it might have been interesting as a one off companion like 10 years ago. the time war hasn't been relevant in ages.

>>68762724
It's garbage. But it's fun, amusing garbage.
>>68762406
What is he even complaining about? He starts off by saying that he has no issues with pearl or asbill and complains about the timing of the announcement as if it was a huge blunder
>>68762724
Pretty far. As in, yeah absolutely 100% it's true the show is shit
>>68762406
Why does he blame Moffat for literally everything? I mean yeah he makes a lot of decisions but I doubt Moffat was the one that said "hey guys lets do it during football". Seems realistically more of a BBC thing.
>>68761882
It has a great score, Baker really confident as the Doctor after being relatively tentative in season twelve, UNIT feeling completely different as an organisation after the more Pertweeish Robot, where if memory serves despite the cold look of seventies OB video a lot of the cosiness of late Pert is still in place. John Woodnutt and the other human-guise Zygon actors get a really eerie hostility going rather than the kind of thing you usually get with bodysnatcher performances, and once revealed the Zygons and their technology are beautifully designed. The Loch Ness Monster visit to London is fairly badly done, complete with crowd screams from fifties sound effects records, though not as badly done as it would have been with Barry Letts' insistence on using yellow, the most reflective colour, for CSO. I wonder why I like it so much, faintly disliking as I do most of this era, and realise that it's one of the few Hinchcliffe era stories that's not just a direct steal from an old movie they assumed the kids hadn't seen yet (though that doesn't help the next season's opener, which is a bit of a trope shuffle to me, despite the potential of the setting and culture.)
Downside - the phone conversation with 'Madame' Prime Minister isn't just a futuristic detail that subsequently came true, as Thatcher was already Tory leader by then - putting that in could be seen as a rejoinder to Letts' equally partisan reference to the Prime Minister as 'Jeremy' in The Green Death. That was harmless enough - even in 1973, the Liberal Party (whose leader was Jeremy Thorpe) had a very slim chance of winning. This reference is less endearing.
>>68762497

>>68763290
MrTurdisReviews complaining about the new companion and presenting his "better idea" which is utterly pigshit and contrived.
>>68762389
I think the contract is probably for a defined period. I honestly think the next producer should take the risk of not renewing it. The Daleks don't work as a focal point in their own right, as Nation discovered in the sixties, shopping them around US producers, and the design, I believe, is copyright of the BBC, so to use them recognisably anywhere else they'd still have to pay the Beeb. (Same situation is why K9, in that independently produced thing his owners set up, morphed into something so different as to defeat the object of using him.)
>>68763319
What's his idea?
Given the choice, would you rather watch:
a) The Ark with Philip Sandifer beside you explaining in detail why it's an evil piece of colonialist propaganda
b) The Deadly Assassin with Lawrence Miles beside you explaining in detail why it's a rubbish story and it ruined the Time Lords
c) Attack of the Cybermen with Ian Levine beside you explaining in detail why that story is a work of genius for which he is solely responsible and Eric Saward is a phucking bastard
d) Human Nature/The Family of Blood with Jack Graham beside you explaining in detail why it's disgusting pro-war indoctrination
e) The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion with Gareth Roberts beside you explaining in detail why it's pro-ISIS bullshit and we should close our borders now
Well, /who/?
>>68762406
I listened to the whole thing and I'm still not really sure what he's so angry about. It's like he wants to says he's upset that there was an ugly black person cast as the new companion instead of his terrible le epic soldier green girl OC dream waifu but he can't say that so he beats around the bush and complains about the timing of the announcement (who the fuck cares about this seriously) and the clip itself (which I agree feels pretty rushed and lame but whatever give her a chance Christ)

>>68763447
Ian Levine's argument is better than that, he acknowledges it's shit, but it is *his* shit, his and Eric's, and he wants recognition.
>>68763575
Pardon me, I stand corrected.
>>68763447
>c) Attack of the Cybermen with Ian Levine beside you explaining in detail why that story is a pile of pigshit for which he is solely responsible and Eric Saward is a phucking bastard
>>68763661
Well I don't want to quibble, but he does acknowledge Eric's involvement, the bit that annoys him is 'Paula Moore', a penname for someone who wasn't even a writer, getting the credit. I'm only being picky because all the other options in the list are completely accurate.
>>68763943
It's my fault for being lazy, I went back to reread Graham's list of worst stories for that post but I didn't bother to check the facts of the Attack controversy, which I'd only heard about.
>>68764184

First, the 'ratings' fall. Series 8: "In terms of L+7 ratings the series was the highest rated Doctor Who series since its revival in 2005." (Wikipedia). Yes, ratings fell in 2015, but that has been the case for ALL televised drama. FFS THE BBC BROADCAST THE 1ST 2 EPS AT THE SAME AS THE RUBY FINALS ON ANOTHER CHANNEL. (And even then, it was STILL the BBCs 4th top rated show).
"Doctor Who's ninth series received critical acclaim, and was hailed by many critics as the show's best season to date. Series 9 holds a perfect 100% score on online review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 8.1. It has also won the Rotten Tomatoes' Golden Tomato Award for best-reviewed TV sci-fi/fantasy/horror show of 2015. The site's consensus reads "Peter Capaldi and the writers have settled into an emotionally engaging tone, allowing the show to raise the stakes for the Twelfth Doctor"...........
In reviews for various episodes across the series, many critics highlighted series 9 as the show's greatest yet. In their review for "Hell Bent", IGN called series 9 "a very strong season of Doctor Who – possibly the best season of the modern run of the show", while New York Magazine stated "It’s been a largely brilliant season... possibly even the best since the new series began" in their review for the same episode. Discussing the series as a whole, The A.V. Club stated "Doctor Who is great again, and this season represents maybe the best mixture yet of the show’s head and its heart". Of the twelve episodes in the season, they awarded five a perfect 'A' grade (the most for any season of the show), while awarding a further five episodes either an A- or a B+. Furthermore, TVEquals.com called series 9 "one of the strongest seasons of the show in years"." (Wikipedia again).

The trouble with that is that the problems with Colin's Doctor were so blatant as to be pretty unanimously agreed upon by the fan community.
Popular fan consciousness does not acknowledge any of the problems with Ten or his era. It is extremely unlikely that the writers of the 10/Donna audios were even aware of anything that needed fixing.

>>68769060
Yep. There's an episode a couple of series later where The Doctor allows his black companion to be strung up in a tree. He laughs about it too, whilst advocating a nuclear war in the middle east. It's probably Gareth Robert's best episode.

I'll go back and watch it if the series isn't as fucking badly written as the first episode, but if it stays trash like that I might just stop watching Dr Who entirely, and this is coming from someone who's watched it his whole life. The show's been run into the ground under the pretense of
>"oh these aren't plot wholes, everything links together when I have enough plot wholes in the series to write an episode or two explaining them away"
or Moffat's autistic obsession with le twists that kill what would have otherwise been a great episode.
>the time travel horse episode isn't nominated

>>68772358
There will never be an episode of MLP nor indeed any animated cartoon within the next decade that even approaches Heaven Sent. There will be very well done episodes, but nothing on that level. The animation industry is trapped in a hell where that kind of ambition and conceptual fearlessness no longer exists, if it ever did. Watching other forms of manchild media always makes me feel incredibly grateful that we have Doctor Who (at least until Chinballs ruins it).
>>68772595
Heaven Sent is a powerful story about the Doctor overcoming existential horror, grief and mortality in order to perform an unimaginably huge task. It's written, designed, shot and scored in a very beautiful way. The puzzle box structure of the episode serves to make the final reveal, in an overwhelming fury of sound and images, as transcendent as possible. Capaldi gives a gripping and hugely ranged performance. Nothing not to like, really

I agree with one of the above poster's sentiments. A series is NOT canon unless it has at least one Gareth Roberts episode/idea woven into the plot.
For example, Day of the Doctor is canon as a standalone episode, because the Queen sub-plot was first mentioned in The Shakespeare Code, which was one of Gareth's genius episodes.
Series 9 = No Gareth Roberts involvement = Not canon.

Whatever you do, at least watch Heaven Sent. That's the best episode of NuWho and only has Capaldi in it.
>>68772522
I'm kinda pleased Gomez got a BAFTA nod. Just annoyed that Capaldi didn't.
Idris Elba SHOULD have been nominated for the BAFTA for Luther season 2, and BAFTA know it. Instead, they nominated him for the last Luther episodes which were, to put it bluntly, pants.
>>68773097

I dunno, there are some pretty good cartoons out there m8. Some Adventure Time episodes are pretty fascinating and memorable. For instance, the episode "Puhoy" is an excellent, highly conceptual little self-contained fantasy story (even if it's a little silly to compare a 10-minute cartoon to an hour-long live-action adventure).
>>68772955
>Acting commander Cass, a deaf woman that speaks through her translator Lunn
Ok, what the fuck. Why does this show have to be so full of SJW crap. Is this why the writing sucks, because they have to shoehorn in minority representation? I don't care how good of a character she is, it makes no fucking sense for anyone in the military to be deaf and require an interpreter.
>>68773138
>and only has Capaldi in it
Honestly he fucking carried his whole first series and that's why I was hopefully. Even Davros' episode and their dynamic was fucking top tier, until the shit writing and pacing kicked in.

>>68773282
Yeah, but not in the military as a commander. if she was a contracted scientific expert, then maybe I could see it, but not a fucking military operational commander, or in a position to be an acting commander. The military is supposed to he efficient, having a deaf commander is something that would slow an operation down, especially if only one person serves as their interpreter.

>>68772632
>they made his Davros did nothing wrong speech into a le ruse.
>antagonist development killed off in the last 8 minutes?
Stop being dumb senpai.
Davros has known the Doctor long enough to know that he wouldn't fall for crocodile tears. And he is enough of an old and sad git that he would, on some level, seriously have all of those doubts and melancholies at this stage of his life.
The only way to appeal to the Doctor's compassion was to put himself into a state where his dignity was no longer in question, and his very much sincere inner feelings would be exposed, in a most brutal piece of performance art.
Because Davros is a twisted genius, he was able to do this while simultaneously holding within his mind the safety net of his true, greedy motives. It's fascinating and shows a new, extreme side of Davros without selling out the core of his character.
The Doctor is like the wise angel of the story. The Doctor doesn't truly ruse Davros - what happens is that he offers something sincere to Davros, and Davros takes too much of it, more than he can handle. The Doctor is intelligent enough to know what could happen, and sets it up like in some kind of ancient fable or myth, where it's the protagonist's own greediness that ruins what could have been a kindness to them. I love the whole use of their relationship in this story, I think it's marvelous.

Oh, and the Daleks dying from their own cruelty to the old Daleks is brilliant. The whole concept of Daleks degrading to waste matter is a wonderfully appropriate karmic fate for them, and the idea that the Doctor could actually make them rise up, drowning their replacements in the waste matter they themselves tried to bury, is flat out GOAT.

>>68773522
>>68773636
I see the point you're trying to make, but honestly I would have preferred they just give Davros a dignified final death. The writers obviously don't care to do much with him, leaving him in limbo for 7-8 years.
I get that the Doctor saw this as a way to destroy the city, but the immediate turn around of the character's attitudes is fucking shit. Both of these men have fought each other many times before and seen some hardcore shit. Their meeting under these circumstances is fitting. Two powerful rivals get together as one is dying and they decide to part ways amicably, not fighting. Davros is a fucking super genius, he would have known the Doctor would beat him yet again, and being on his deathbed, why bother with another failed plan? His goals had been accomplished, the Daleks have been autonomous for a while, Skaro is back. I know he's supposed to be a megalomaniac and all that, but even still he had to know his time would come eventually, why not go out knowing he was more or less successful and with your rival there to see you pass?

>>68761882
Part 1 of this has one of the worst "environmentalist" scenes in Who imo. The Doctor shows complete disinterest in a series of disasters that are killing innocent workers just because they happen to be on oil rigs. I mean there's being eco-friendly and then there's just being an edgelord. In fact, the Doctor's attitude of looking down on humans for still using oil is kind of shitty in itself. It's easy for him to judge, being from a more advanced society that already has viable alternatives to fossil fuel, but it would be like one of us going back in time 200 years and chastising people for riding horses when they should obviously just invent automobiles and airplanes.

>>68773914
I'd suggest anyone who is content to ignore nuance, and commit to a boring misreading of the story, is not being as intelligent as they could be tbqh.
If you want evidence that we can read real meaning into Davros during this episode, the clincher is his reaction to learning that Gallfirey is back. He couldn't possibly have learnt about that beforehand by other means, otherwise the Daleks would already have run off and started Time War 2 (the premise the whole of TotD hinged on). And his tearful reaction to hearing it is rooted very interestingly in his Nazi-esque beliefs.
For someone so committed to the idea of racial supremacy and fighting for your people, the idea that his old and eternal rival might no longer be the last of his kind - having actually reclaimed his race from the hell Davros witnessed in the Time War - would naturally be moving, no pretend necessary. And the fact he is capable of showing that to the Doctor is proof of what he is really doing, which is no disposable pantomime. It is his last desperate gambit and it requires 110%.
The tragic irony is that he can draw all these confessions from within himself but still throw it all away at the last hurdle, such is the compulsive power of his evil. It's not sweet and satisfying, but god damn it beats a weepy Davros redeemed over the course of one long conversation. Frankly it would take a lot more than being on death's door to truly make him see the light.

The good bit of Face the Raven is the scene inside the room when they are trying to cope with what's about to happen. It's a GOAT scene and nothing about it is changed by what happens later.
The episode loses some of its 'specialness' retroactively, sure, due to not actually being the final end of a character's journey, but if that meta 'specialness' was all there was to a good death scene then we'd be singing the praises of Adric's. And we aren't because Adric's death was PHUCKING shite and he's not even real.

There is a certain school of thought, exclusively among Classic Who fans, that thinks Adric's death is a pinnacle of drama. Fair enough it's a sad scene to watch. But as a story it is not much of an achievement.

See, that's what I don't like about it. Rassilon was always this godlike figure who invented time travel, TARDISes, regeneration etc. He pulled the Gallifreyans up from a bunch of soup-slurping peasants, punched a Vortex through reality, and banished the witches to Karn. And now... he's just a cranky old guy who the Doctor tells to go away, and he does.

That anon has a perfectly legitimate complaint, he's not being dumb.
The ending might make sense for you from a characterization stanpoint, but if we're talking about the plot, there's a damn good reason to complain. The final twists between the Doctor and Davros come with too little build-up, they change the entire motivation of the two main characters within a few seconds. That's not honest storytelling. When the Doctor touches the wires, the story becomes, to all intents and purposes, something different, thus cheapening everything that came before.
I might have appreciated what the story was doing if there had been a little subtle build-up, but as it stands, the story makes a clumsy U-turn a few minutes before the end.
You say that you don't want a "weepy Davros redeemed over the course of a conversation", and I don't want it either. But a meaningful emotional exchange between the Doctor and Davros is what the episode itself leads towards - until sudenly it doesn't.
The ending doesn't render what came before meaningles by denying it. Rather, it renders it meaningless by abandoning it and going in a completely different direction, by denying an emotional resolution of any kind (redemption, no redemption, I don't care) to it.
Maybe if the twist had been better executed I might agree with you. But as it stands, I think that ending was fucking atrocious.

I didn't see that at all, I saw a man on his death bed justifying his actions to himself, I doubt the Doctor or the audience was meant to forgive him for all the shit he'd done in the past. I saw an emotional exchange between two long time adversaries, with Davros realizing he was at the end of his life and wanting to go out seeing his home world again, with his creation continuing on.
But nope, fuck that, can't have real character depth and development, Davros only has two emotions, scheming and angry!

I'm not saying that he wasn't sincere, I'm saying that the question of whether he is sincere or not is eventually made pointless in the context of the episode.
