oh shit this is out on bluray now
maybe i should rewatch it, i think it was like 10 years since i last saw it
>>68630745
that's the point
I knew when people started throwing around this made up "kino" shit that eventually they would take it seriously. People here are so fucking dumb.
Is this a good first Tarkovsky film to watch?
>>68631024
are you crazy? you think you can just watch a movie like that?
what, you're going to download it and press play? are you kidding me?
>>68631024
Yes.
Watch Andrei Rublev next, then watch the rest except Solaris which is optional at best and leave Mirror and The Sacrifice for last.
>>68630305
/tv/ loved this and started to hate it when became mainstream
>>68631024
in this order
The Mirror > The Sacrifice > Nostalghia > Andrei Rublev > Solaris > Stalker > Ivan's Childhood > The Steamroller and the Violin
>>68631024
No.
You should watch his filmography in chronological order. Ivan's Childhood is easier to digest than something like Stalker or Solaris. You might want to skip Andrei Rublev for a later watch if you're not really into the subject matter.
>>68630305
entry-level garbage, it's practically capeshit
>>68631162
You mean the other way round? The Mirror is kinda heavy for first timers.
My list would be:
Ivan's Childhood > Andrei Rublev > Stalker > Solaris > The Mirror > Nostalghia > The Sacrifice
Pretty boring movie. Dialogue also sucks balls, they just wander around and compete who has the most vague and most philosophic lines
They should've just ditched the whole plot because it doesn't take the film anywhere. It would be better if it was just stalker wandering around the zone, nothing explained
>>68631143
you just described every movie talked about here.
In my top 3, with Fargo and American Beauty.
STALKER Is Literally One Of The Worst Movies Ever Created; So Fucking boring. First Off, It's Super Slow. I'd Have More Fun Watching Paint Dry Then I Did Watching This Movie. Second, Why Does The Main Guy always Throw Those Nuts? Like, Nothing Ever Happens. Thirdly, None Of The Dialog is Interesting; All They talk About Is Meh, I Want To Go This Way And Meh I Want To Go The Quick Way. Or Whenever The Main Russian Is On The Verge Of Crying Whenever He Tells Them About The Zone Or Whatever. Lastly, How In The Hell Did The Phone Ring If Nothing Else In The Area Worked, Like What The Hell Was The Point Of That Whole Scene. All Of A Sudden The One Guy Has A Bomb To Blow Some Place Up. The Place Doesn't Even Grant Wishes, It Was All In Their Heads. Also, Wtf Was Up With The Girl At The End Who Had Magneto Powers, What Was The Point. It Just Ended Right After Showing You She Has Superpowers. Like It Could Have Explored That And The Movie Would Be A Thousand Times Better.

I remember I watch Andrei Rublev in class in my uni. It was without subtitles, but i'm Pole so I understand it a bit. It was first time then I ever saw Russian film. I imagine communist Russia cinema a bit different. Pretty sure there was shot where they almost show boobs. I remember after the end I was thinking "What is propaganda message in this film"?
I tried watching this so many times but I can never get through the first 15 mins, it's just so fucking boring. What am I missing? This is coming from someone who loved the turing horse btw

>>68636361
Who should direct it?
>>68634101
so random xD
>>68636438
could anyone currently in hollywood handle it without butchering it completely?
>>68636385
no, a lot of things happen, but he directed so bad that the happenings got completely lost in his "poetic" narrative
>>68636527
Exactly, my point was that sometimes the viewer has to put effort in to see/notice whats going on. The mona lisa isn't just a painting of a woman.

>>68636695
maybe putting effort to understand a film is too much, all you need is attention and some point of view. The director can't throw in some stuff only he understands and expect others to understand too, he must at least try to communicate his idea, and Tark was so bad at it that he just came out and said "there's nothing to understand, fuck off".
You can still get something of his works of couse, but it can be a complete let down if you go for it expecting some degree of explanation.

I've never actually watched any Tarkovsky. Would it be worth waiting for the 1080 transfers that Curzon will be putting out, or should I just go for the DVD quality stuff? I can't decide.
I'm russian myself and Stalker always makes me absolute comfy since it reminds me of my past. When I was 4 or 5 we were going fishing with my uncle.
We were usually waking up at 4 am, grab something to eat and then go to railroad station to catch first train. Uncle was working on that station, and he knew everyone there, so often some railroad workers were letting us ride that small train called 'drezina' in russian. The main hero of the movie rides motodrezina in the kino.
For me this movie is a nostalgic odyssey to the past that I never had. It's like a foggy and yet comfy dream.
Is Tarkovsky better to watch high or sober?
>>68637472
1080p would be a good idea, he's heavy on the cinematography so making it the best definition possible is always a good choice
>>68630305
No, this is.
>>68637624
Ok cool, thanks anon
>>68637536
looks like your childhood was comfy as fuck. jealous/10
>People watch director's filmography's in anything but chronological order
How the fuck can you see their development and evolution as auteurs if you don't watch them in the order that they were made?
WTF?
>>68637472
just checked kat.cr, there are 1080p x265 rips available. what's wrong with them? why wait?

I think at some point films transcend the shallow competitiveness of what's best and what's worst. That's for the mainstream audience-filling flicks and capeshit to do.
>>68631600
Dialogue is shit because it's translated poorly. I've tried to watch Solaris with eng subs and it was oversimpified as fuck. Its really hard to translate russian kino and literature.
Stripping Roadside Picnic of its cinematic elements is anti kino.
>>68636361
