Do you know why people today, including George RR Martin, use the term 'wight' to refer to a zombie or wraith-like being?
It stems entirely from a misinterpretation of Tolkien's "Barrow Wights"
In Old and Middle English, the word 'wight' just meant 'person' or 'being' and was often used in the same way we say 'guy'. Tolkien apparently liked this obsolete word so he used it in the term 'Barrow Wights', IE 'Barrow People'.
However, due to the nature of the barrow wights, readers mistook 'wight' as denoting a zombie in and of itself. Thus every Tolkien knock-off subsequently associated 'wights' with zombies, and at this point it has spread to everything ffrom Elder Scrolls to DnD.
Now if you were to say "My friend is a good wight" it would be met with confusion.
